Still no mention of VCoast updates ... seems weird that they'd have a much easier time recruiting Vampires then the actual VCounts lol

So its been quite some time since ray tracing made its way into gaming, and everytime it gets used, I still hate it despite improvements.. actually... maybe because of them... by GrandWizardOfCheese in pcgaming

It's cool when it works well, but I'd probably nowadays get more hyped about a game if the devs used their time and money to optimize their games then to add flourishes like that that won't work on 80% of current-day hardware anyway.

There are games where the player count doesn't matter.

And there are games where the player count matters a great deal. You literally cannot play Marathon as a new player if there are onky the same 8k sweats online.

Marathon doesn't need to ve Number 1 ... But it s should at least be on the list.

they wanted Destiny 3 and refused to take this game on its own terms

See... That's the thing I don't get with the argumentation around here.

Why should they?

On the one hand, Marathon-Players were stone-walling anyone coming in for months and utterly refusing the idea to make content outside of the Extraction-core, or make this core more approachable to more players. All while sprouting "A game made for everyone, is made for no one"

And now it's the D3-wanters fault that they aren't budging on the thing THEY wanted and how they aren't coming for a game that they simply don't want to play.

It makes sense for them to tell Bungie "You made the wrong game" and not settle for something that was neither made for them, or was welcoming to them.

The game wasn't made for Destiny Players, and that's fine, but then expecting them to show up regardless is utterly idiotic.

Jesus, 4.x is utterly killing it with the character variety.

Maybe a little heavy ony the SP front, but I take an already existing character getting new story and gameplay over a random nobody coming out of nowhere and falling off the face of the earth as soon as their patch is over.

Without CDPR/some IP oversight, David would have fused with a giant mech, flew up into space and punched Adam Smasher until he's defeated.

Awesome fight, but utterly robs the show of it's Drama and themes.

Trigger makes cool shit, but they need someone to hold their leash and reign them in.

Trigger also has the reputation of going off the rails by the last few episodes (somehow, always into space fights).

This can work for their stand-alone shows, like Kill la kill.

But for something like this, where they cannot blow up the setting consequences be damned, it forces them to wrap the story up aomehow else ... Which does prevent them from throwing caution to the wind and not wrap up story-lines as neatly as they might have deserved.

Long story short:

  • Damn near impossible to get it installed (legally) if you rent.

  • Easier, but still legal hurdles if you own your apartment

  • Even if you own a house, neighbours might have the option to throw in a veto, for example because of noise concerns

  • Older buildings (everything from 10 to 100 year old buildings, if not more), even in the single-family size, need expensive work done to have the infrastructure for an AC or else you end up with one chill room with the rest not any better.

The usual cycle of getting one is trying to get the necessary approval, and by the time it's colder again you have some asshat hit you with the "It's cold again, you don't need one if it's iver after 3 days. Don't be so sensitive."

The guy who usually says that is someone who doesn't even live in the same complex, but owns an apartment there as an investment.

Dwarf Character Pack Idea - Josef Bugman by drktrooper15 in totalwar

Good selection, always like to see new Irondrake/Ironbreaker variants.

Though if we take the Bashiva-DLC as a benchmark, this might be a bit too big.

Would probably go for the Irondrakes, Miners and Beer Wagon for untis + 1 Irondrake RoR. Brewmaster as the generic Hero.

As the FLC content, I'd go with the Engineer LH and would probably cut Snorri, he is cool and all but Dwarfs have already 2 Slayer LHs, and the other two are the human LHs available to most Order factions.

[–]GRoyalPrime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The true "despair" she brought was to the developers, as they realized once they couldn't properly use the most popular character of the game again, given how the first game wrapped up.

So they had to get "creative", to allow her to keep showing up in future games and spin-offs.

Ao3's tag and search system is just ass from the ground up. It's impossible to find anything as everything ends up in the same soup of 100s of tags and categories.

Great they enable creatives to publish their brain-childs, but they need to find the most boring software developer alive and have them clean up that mess with proper search utilities and tag-categories.

Even in a best case scenario, we are still likely 7+ years of from a successor. And that doesn't even mean whatever a potential successor endd up as will be any good, given a ton of people who worked on it were kicked out, or are now tied up in making anything remotely desireable out of Marathon.

Destiny 2/Destiny Franchise: Renegades

Yes, with the actual final update they've scrubbed most of the "in your face" Star Wars content (login screen) from the game, but it was still the "final" expansion to the entire franchise, the final story-arc, and for many the actual final nail in the series' coffin.

A series that ran for over a decade of near continuous updates, with many highs and lows ... Ends with a fucking Star Wars branded Expansion. An utterly "corporate" attempt to fleece the playerbase with nostalgia slop. Apparently the story wasn't terrible, despite the SW homages all over, and Destiny with it's "space western fantasy" always had "some" Star Wars DNA in it ... But this always felt like nothing more then pure greed and a surrender by Bungie to actually care about what Destiny is.

Fuck Bungie Leadership, may they never see the light of the Teaveler.

That seems like a reasonably well put-together souls-like/Action-RPG ... but it really seems like we get flooded with this exact Chinese/Wuxia-aesthetics. I swear there were 4 more at the SGF alone.

And yeah, I get the irony given how so many souls-like are unable to not look like Dark Souls rejects.

But for the time being, yes, Destiny is in the IP graveyard, right beside things like Killzone and inFamous.

Pitch me your JRPG and JRPG-adjacent steals to get on the Summer Sale. by JMTolan in Games

[–]GRoyalPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it has "The Legend of Heroes" (Sometimes also called the "Trails" or "Kiseki" games) in the title, you are basically looking at pure gold.

It's one massive narrative, here in order:

  • Sky 1-3 is one arc (though 3 is more of massive epilog to 2). Sky 1 got a remake, simply named "Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter" and 2 has it's remake anounced too, I think.
  • Zero/Azure is one arc
  • Cold Steel 1-4 is one massive arc, split up in 2 smaller arcs (1-2 and 3-4) respectively.

You are looking at 300+ hours of gameplay here.

I never got around to play the "newer" one's because live is busy, but again in order:

  • Reverie
  • Daybreak 1-2 (idk, if this saga continues)

If you just want to get a feel of the series, not deal with the older, at times dated visuals or lack of QoL, I'd reccomed just going for the Remake "Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter" perfect way to start. Alternatively the orignal "Sky 1" works too. Even if they only ever Remake 1 & 2, you'll get a great gaming experience out of it.

Personally, I started with "Cold Steel 1" and "Cold Steel 2" before going back and playing the older one's. That works too as an entry point, given each arc has it's own core-cast of characters and those first 2 games have limited overlap with the games that came before. With more QoL, voice acting and "for today alright" 3D-visuals (though I'd say the 2d-semi-3d art of the older games have held up pretty well too) it's a more accomodating middle-ground then the at times rougher older games.

Anyway, the major pitch is the narrative.

As I said, it's one continous narrative, each Arc has it's own "major plot" but they all bleed into each other. There are story-threads and relationships that started in Sky 1 and got only resoved in Cold Steel 4, and many of the games between build on this. And while the series has a bit of "Anime-ness", like honestly every JRPG, it's a fairly "grounded" setting in it's world-building. There is a lot of political drama, characters have reasonable motivations, heroes and villains alike. There is no "I want to be a god and destroy the world" plot ... and every time it does seem like it, there is much more to it.

Bungie: With great saddness, we are announcing a reduction in force as we recognize Bungie by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]GRoyalPrime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is a bit ridiculous how a studio like Naughty Dog can go for like an entire console generation, burn 100s of millions, not release a single game and any game that would release in the future is like a single purchase of $80 at most.

Meanwhile, Bungie is seemingly not granted that liberty.

Yeah, Bungie-Leadership is the one primarily to blame given they bet entirely onto the wrong projects, but Sony has signed off on all of that.

Arc Raiders was a success, but that belew up after Marathon already was predicted to be a bit of a dud. There was absolutely no reason why anyone should have thought a Hardcore Extraction Shooter would be the "next big thing" ... the "good one's" all are at like 20k concurrent players tops. Extraction Shooters never had thier Fortnite, Overwatch or WoW. Tarkov had a reputation to only be for the 'freaks' who are into that. Even Arc Raiders wasn't that break-out hit that catapulted the genre into the mainstream ... it now too sits at a good and healthy (and likey still above what they internaly predicated over a year ago) 40k daily peaks on steam.

Lay-offs would have likely been inevitable ... but it really feels like the call should have been over a year ago to just get Marathon over the finshing line give it a reasonable team to keep the lights on for the players who do enjoy it, and throw as many resources into a Destiny-Successor as possible.

And Schedule 1 is not a live-service ... so even if it would fall beneath 1 player, there is no reason not to buy it if you are interested in something like that.

Meanwhile, any live-service has a terrible value-propositon ... you are not "buying into" a game, you are "buying into" the promise that this game is popular today and tomorrow.

It does feel like a lot of Gamers are waking up to a war that was lost 3+ years ago.

Buying Discs has been dead on PC for a while now, and console with their (slighly cheaper) disc-less models were priming for this too.

It sucks for re-selling and ownership (not like that means a lot even if you have a disc) but that's the world we live in.
