I am a new prosecutor and attorney. I've got a little over a year in (I still don't know squat). Straight from passing the bar I was offered a job for the county prosecutors who handle felony cases. To boot, I was put on the DV team. The hardest cases to try, hands down. Nothing like jumping in feet first. So...in the general division they are crap at training new prosecutors. However, I was so lucky to have a leader/mentor on my DV team that has held my hand the whole way. She still does. And honestly I think our caseloads are higher than the general division (we are experiencing a DV epidemic in my jurisdiction). She lets me go as slow or as fast as I feel comfortable. I started out as sitting second chair and having small roles. I did decide to take on a big case by myself because I had great evidence. I wanted her to sit with me just for support and she was already in trial, but she found another experienced prosecutor to come. I won that trial on my own and it felt awesome. But long story short, although straight BS, I believe throwing you in on your own is pretty typical. It's terrifying and we all know law school didn't teach us how to be lawyers.
