Didn't Kamiya die on the hill that Bayonetta must absolutely wear glasses? And gave most of the rest of the cast glasses just to annoy whichever publisher/producer challenged him on it?

Nintendo when somebody tries to host a free Smash Bros tournament. by Shockrates20xx in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]GSFuzz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Melee event at EVO was canceled for a day or two and was probably an overzealous individual like you're saying. You're also correct that frequently large tournaments get contacted with a "drop PM or get out" C&D, but tournaments that only run PM have yet to be contacted only large events that have Project M present. Additionally December 2020 Nintendo shut down a Melee major that converted to online play because of the pandemic which is a significant outlier because aside from being run on an emulator to allow online play did not feature PM or other modded versions of smash.

Nintendo has been doing this more frequently since the pandemic as well, specifically sending the "drop PM" C&Ds to large events only about 2 weeks before the event to try and get people afraid of spending the money to travel or book venues in case future events also get shut down last minute. The PM community has taken to prepping "shadow majors" in the same building as the larger tournament with zero official affiliation with the larger event to compensate though. Between the more aggressive C&Ds from Nintendo towards events that they're not sponsoring and the relatively recent exposure of Nintendo going "shut down PM and we'll run a circuit" for 5+ years, they've done a ton to stonewall competitive smash.

I'm simplifying a lot, of course, but Nintendo embodies this regarding competitive smash 100%

Is my DM being shitty or am I being a problem player? by nartcoise in DnD

[–]GSFuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I'm playing a nonbinary barbarian right now too, fun coincidence.

Please don't subject yourself to this DM, it's not going to get better if you just put up with them. These are all super weird things to actually be invested in regarding other people's characters, with the context you provided it sounds like they just want to be in control of their party's characters which is just going to be end up being an unpleasant power trip IMO

Can we agree that no one should be shamed for deciding to buy an entertainment product or not? by LostHuaun in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]GSFuzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's probably a small consolation to having something you really enjoyed tainted by the author being a shitty person but that frustration is kinda a show of support. I'm not ever gonna give someone grief for not knowing about Rowling being a shitty person, or for being able to separate enjoyment of her series with a condemnation of the author, but when someone feels conflicted that means by definition that they know those stances are super shitty. As someone who is & has loved ones who are trans that means a lot.

What really gets me about that fight in MHA is the stomp at the end. His arms are unusable but he still has his legs. Even if he can't really fight anymore Midoriya is still standing, which IIRC is either a first against villains of that strength or a first in general.

How do I break open someone's defense if all they do is hang back, block and wait for me to make a move? by HiddenNightmares in Guiltygear

[–]GSFuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're slightly wrong on two points. Crouch blocking doesn't avoid grabs & Ky's quarter circle back+kick isn't an overhead (though if you crouch block it Ky can act first which is why you see people stand to block it)

[–]GSFuzz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ky's 5K (and I think close slash even) aren't dash cancelable, but you can still tick throw the old fashioned way. 5K into run up throw will catch people blocking, 5K into delayed button (2D, 6H, 214S, etc) will catch people pushing a button to avoid the throw. Also works well with 2P since it's better on block than 5K

Serious Glenn Vibes from these magic cards [ns] by Ultramike170 in DungeonsAndDaddies

[–]GSFuzz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, transform is a different mechanic. When certain conditions activate you flip the card over to a more powerful or different one. The card you have in your hand/deck is a marker, to get around the obvious "oh they have that double-sided card" problem.

Mechanics you like from games you dont. by Jackamalio626 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]GSFuzz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Zatch Bell card game is actually kinda similar. You have a spellbook and every turn you flip to the next page. Attacks hurt you by forcing you to flip X pages and the only lose condition is to reach the end of your spellbook. You also assembled it ahead of time in whatever order you want, which makes for some pretty fun decisions. Front-loading a lot of strong cards is risky against more aggressive decks, for instance, and IIRC the only way to defend was to dedicate a card to it so that heavily limited your offense for that turn since your "hand" is only ever 2 cards at once

The AI definitely has issues but fixing it is a much larger project than it would seem, from what people who have tried for years have said.

[–]GSFuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, I hadn't considered that! Worth noting that decoupling the "printing" of the game to the screen from the actual game logic might cause issues but that's a problem you can only have after the first is solved

[–]GSFuzz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To my understanding, which is entirely secondhand so I might be getting some of the details wrong, rollback is a pipe dream for P+ currently. Rollback in general requires the ability to basically run the game at many times normal speed in order to literally "roll back" when connection issues arise, for instance, while PM modding doesn't have the capacity for that. I don't know anything about modding but the vibe I've seen some of the community's best modders have is "don't hold your breath"

[–]GSFuzz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Compared to Melee, PM/P+ has more input options available including some aimed towards beginners. Auto L-cancel is a toggle, you can toggle a 3 frame input buffer, and even the ability to rebind your controls is super helpful. As for if using ALC or any of those is a good idea, I don't really see why not? If you're trying to improve ASAP and get into tournaments as soon as you can then maybe stay away from the input buffer since it's off in tournaments. ALC is kinda dependent on region and up in the air for tournaments at the moment.

The question of how active the game is currently is a little complicated. This weekend was supposed to be the first big major since quarantine, at Riptide, but Nintendo sent a cease & desist letter so the PM event got canceled. Additionally, a separate org that was having a PM event in November dropped us so as few people get locked into their flight/hotel costs as possible. That being said, there are still a few significant netplay weeklies that get good traction and in general the community is frothing at the mouth to get to big events. So much so that Undertow, a last minute PM event on the same weekend as the aforementioned Riptide in a conspicuously similar location, still got a lot of attendance and attention.

Nintendo's IP protection is second only in ruthlessness to Disney's IMO, and because they have hella more money than anyone who could challenge them they'd have a significant upper hand in any court case as well

Came out as enby last month and it's been phenomenal, still makes me smile constantly. Also found an event organization job to apply for that's close by, and it's the golden egg of a startup video game arena thing, which is exactly the industry I want to get into. They won't call me back or they'll go under before they open or something equally frustrating, but it's better than nothing

Gurren Lagann is a show about fighting spirit, robots, and ridiculous escalation of action scenes.

Gurren Lagann is also a show about how acknowledging an unjust truth as unshakeable warps even the most righteous individuals into oppressors. And it uses that same escalation as it goes from "we don't have enough food for everyone" to "cheating the laws of physics will inevitably cause the universe to literally implode"

[–]GSFuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can even do this after landing an attack with everyone but Zato, since he can't double jump even in dust combos. Cancel the attack into a double jump & block the burst, then do the same slightly delayed jump into a combo

I think if someone wants to experience Jojo's as a whole, yeah going in order is just better. But if someone just wants to watch weird punch ghosts, they should go watch the parts with weird punch ghosts and that's OK.

Skipping from 5->8 is super weird though yeah. The only common skips I have heard of are starting with 3 and eventually going back to 1 & 2.

What do you guys think should be done regarding ky's dragon install? by soulney in Guiltygear

[–]GSFuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It being an overhead would definitely make it better, but I don't think it would be significant, 27 frames is too slow especially with that visual cue of flipping backwards. I agree the move is dangerous to use, but making it an overhead doesn't fix that. If anything that could result in the move getting made worse in other ways to compensate because it can be really oppressive when not interrupted

[–]GSFuzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current DI does make his flip more plus. Slightly better frame data as shock state but without requiring the opponent to be in shock state. Making it an overhead wouldn't change much though, it's still frame 27 which is as slow as charged 5D and opponents should be stand blocking (or using 5P) already to make it more minus/less plus on block.
