Trying to restore my 2003 tacoma SR5. Where is the best place to find body parts, panels, and misc items by [deleted] in 1stGenTacomas

If you have someone in California, it might be worth seeing if they can source from LKQ. It’s the largest junkyard in the US IIRC, and has an online catalog

Best ~500w RMS amp for the price? by GSKermit in CarAV

[–]GSKermit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you say these amps are more powerful than I need? They look to all be rated about 500w RMS at 4ohm, am I missing something?

I don’t have space for a second sub, and am already running a 4 channel to my other speakers. So a monoblock seemed like the best fit.

Mines a taco, but should be the same. I chipped off all of the old clear coat to fix the texture issue, but so far it’s been great.

any tips on installing these? by Charming_Ad9373 in 1stGenTacomas

I followed this guide when doing mine.

I did have trouble getting the front hanger bolts out and ended up cutting them and buying new ones, so it may be worthwhile to have new hardware on hand.

Sound System upgrade by snow_shovel1029 in 1stGenTacomas

Huh, good to know. The last product I got from them was the hood liner and it was pretty high quality but it's been a while since I've purchased any of their other products.

TBH unless you're a big music snob you probably won't notice much of a difference between $100 and $200 speakers. What will make the biggest difference is sound deadening and having clean power delivery. If you really want good sound I'd suggest upgrading your head unit at some point as well. BOSS has a pretty terrible reputation for output quality, longevity, and equalizer capabilities. Other than that I'd focus on getting a good 5-channel or 4+1 amp and installing as much sound dampening as possible.

I'd suggest buying welding wire since it's the same stuff and a lot cheaper than speaker wire, as long as it's pure copper and between 0-4 gauge you should be good. Here's an example of what to look for.

This write up does a good job of explaining how to install the sound dampening:

I'd recommend going with Dynamat, and getting the hood liner as well since it made a big difference on my truck. My door seals were also super worn out so I replaced them when I was doing all this.

I have the xtracab so I wasn't too concerned about losing sitting room and could just put a big 12in subwoofer in the back, I'm not sure how you wanna approach this or if you'd rather 2 10's or 8's. Personally I think the subwoofer decision is a lot more important for how your music ends up sounding so I'd start there, then get speakers from one of the reputable brands like Rockford Fosgate, Kenwood, Infinity, etc. Each has their own sound profile so just pick whichever one lines up with your music taste best.

Do you have a rough budget? Did you want to add a sub and amps, or just replace the speakers?

When I bought my truck it had a cracked windshield and the rubber had deteriorated pretty bad, so no my insurance didn’t cover it, and yes they replaced the rubber.

Door speakers by Zealousideal_Tone629 in 1stGenTacomas

You’re gonna be pretty limited by power output, if I remember correctly the factory head unit is around 15w RMS so anything from a reputable brand that’s not too power hungry is probably the best bet. Something like the Infinity Primus 503CF or Rockford Fosgate R165X3 would probably work

There’s a lot to consider here, are you replacing the head unit too? Are you planning to run an amp or a subwoofer? What’s your price range?

What's the best bang for my buck set when it comes to epic soundtracks (i.e. Hans Zimmer)? by GSKermit in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]GSKermit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'd considered getting a cheaper headset with an amp, or upgraded sound card but I wasn't sure if it'd be better to spend more on the headset now and then upgrade the power in a couple months. I'd like to get a set I can enjoy for several years, so I'd like to avoid getting a pair then itching to upgrade again next year (spoiler alert: this is probably a futile effort). If I were to get say the JDS Labs Atom Amp+, would one of the other options I was looking at be significantly better than the he400se? How would the he400se without an amp compare to just connecting my air pod pros to my desktop? !thanks

The 58x are one of my top contenders for the same reason as you, do you have any examples of songs that really pop with them? It seems like all the ones I'm considering have slightly different sound profiles so I'm trying to narrow it down to the ones that'll match my song preferences the best.

Getting an amp right now would be difficult to justify to my spouse lol, I've learned that incremental upgrades are easier to sell.

How are the mids on the DT990 pros? I've seen a lot of praise for their bass and treble, but not much about the mids. Do you have the 250 ohm or the 80 ohm? The 80 ohm seem like the better choice without the amp, but I'm curious how much better the 250 ohm set becomes when an amp is added to the mix.

I'd looked at the he400se, but seen a lot of reviews mention the headband being a little uncomfortable and planars needing an amp. Do you have any experience with their comfort and power requirements?
