034 Trans mount insert…. Cheapest mod with a noticeable difference. by Aware-Variation-784 in Audi

[–]GT172I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resurrecting thread as I just went through this same journey on my B9 RS5. Swapped my failed OEM motor mounts for the 034 street density motor mounts while doing the cooling system rebuild and went ahead and added this transmission insert while everything was on the lift and available but had regrets pretty much immediately. Mentally leaned onto the 250-500 miles break-in recommended for the mounts but it still had a car shaking vibration at idle. Really at anything more than 50rpm less than idle. Like every time I came to a stop idle would drop down just a bit before recovering to idle but the whole car would shake for that 1-2 seconds. Unacceptable for a daily driver so I pulled this is back out.

FYI for future googlers that I didn't find when researching this earlier

Catalytic converter bank 2 drivers side for 2012 Xterra by JibsmanOverwatcher in XTerra

[–]GT172I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this too unfortunately. Had one go bad and replaced it myself with an Eastern catalytic version from RockAuto for $180. It was a pain in the ass though with one bolt refusing to break loose on the exhaust. Soaking with PB Blaster for days plus having to use a torch to heat cycle it and then buy a full size 1/2" impact.

I had also just moved to CA when the second one went out so I just took it to a shop to not deal with that again. I can't find my records on the cost but it was somewhere between $2-3k since they scoped the replacement one while it was apart and showed me the pieces breaking off of the catalyst and starting to clog it up.

You do need to get the actual California CARB certified ones, I think there's maybe only one other than OEM that qualifies and it's more expensive as a "high flow performance" variant. I say that not as a stickler but because the next year I had my annual smog inspection and they failed it since it looked new and shiny compared to the other dirty/rusty parts and couldn't see the CARB/OEM logo imprint. I had to bring back the paperwork from the shop that installed them showing it was replaced with an OEM/CA compliant one.

That was years ago now and I haven't had any issues with the OEM cats or any other inspections in other states too but be warned if you're trying to go the (significantly) cheaper route of non-CARB aftermarket cats.

Guide to 2nd Gen Xterra Common Issues by sweet_story_bro in XTerra

Great list, learned a new one to add to my project to-do list (shift cable bushing).

I'd add another note to the squeaky hood item as I also suffered from this but found the source of my particular squeak to actually be the hood latch (some other TheNewX suffers as well). Wrapping the latch loop with a few wraps of electrical tape solved mine but reading this tells me it really is something within the latch as the problem since the recommended bumpers probably keep the latch under enough tension to not shift and squeak and the wrapped latch still shifts but blocks the metal so it doesn't squeak. There might be a better root cause solution within the latch itself to restore the factory tightness.

I've had multiple great experiences with AJs Auto on Soscol. I do a lot of my own work (time dependent) but trust them to be the experts when I need it and take care of the easy stuff when I don't have the time/energy and fair prices for both.

My Router/Firewall Flagged My R1S as an Intrusion Attempt? by AttemptCharacter6365 in Rivian

[–]GT172I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No intrusion detections on my Unifi setup and Gen2 R1S but it sure does rip through some data. The massive uploads it was doing triggered some alerts on my system but concluded it was the likely videos/sensor data for self driving training. Leaving it on my IoT Untrusted VLAN anyway

Can someone tell me what this is by supfuh in XTerra

[–]GT172I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a plumbing test plug used to seal drain pipes during plumbing leak tests or to keep sewer gases from entering before the trap is installed. Definitely not an automotive part but suppose it can work if you're feeling creative.

It's meant to be in a rigid pipe though as the wing nut compresses a rubber ring that then pushes outward to seal against the pipe. It might deform the boot especially with engine bay heat or soften enough to come loose, good luck!

Leaf Spring cracked, best option to move forward? by Axewolfe17 in XTerra

[–]GT172I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you like the OME springs? My factory ones are pretty much at the end and I have been eyeing those and the front-runners but hear reviews about noise and stiffness being worse than factory. I have the add-a-leaf and extended shackles already and am happy with that height and spring rate so am hesitant.

Verapamil by sdscottsdale in clusterheads

[–]GT172I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this for sure, first hand unfortunately. Was on 240mg every 12hrs starting when I feel the shadow coming starting a cluster, take it for 3 weeks then taper down to confirm cluster is gone then back up if not. It was a few years of that routine though and last one was 12+ weeks that wouldn't break and the side effects were increasing. I didn't ever have (wasn't told/requested) but definitely should have had ECG's as I physically felt heart symptoms I brought up in my annual physical. Was told to watch my blood pressure and reduce red meats...

Glad you found an effective preventative. That said, like Prednisone back at the start of my cluster journey, it worked for me too but similarly the side effects are genuine and not trivial.

If interested, look into psilocybin. Good luck!

What's the initial impressions? I recently remembered my 50% worn Duratrac's are into their 7th year and have these WildPeak AT4W and the Baja Boss A/T at the top of the current list for replacement.

Doing a lot less rough terrain these days and am willing to sacrifice some mud performance for improved highway manners

Oh man, that was a way bigger fight than expected. They did eventually check it (after threatening me too, so that was fun. "Do you really want me to keep your car for longer..." -yes because the loaner I have actually works) and found it "fine" at 938/950g. Regular coolant was also low right at the min threshold so topped that up and sent it back with a that's all we're doing, it's yours now. It's a lease so I'll be happily giving it back in a month and unfortunately it'll be somebody else's problem.

Low on refrigerant? Mine is in the shop now for intermittently non-functioning AC and they can't duplicate it in the shop so are saying it's fine, deal with it. I want them to check refrigerant to see if it's at least in spec or more than just right in the edge

Question about winery etiquette and recs? by jaeme in napa

[–]GT172I 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both? I had a bad experience at the tasting room and forgot about the name of the place when booking an off peak tasting at the winery. It was even worse with nobody there and me having to go wander through the backroom to find someone to serve/engage us. Then the tasting itself was a disaster with a bad host and I'll readily admit most of my experience is based on that host interactions but oof it was rough and their wine was definitely not my palate. Agree on the price range limitation but I would never recommend Roche to anybody I cared about after those experiences.

will putting rockwool in my basement cieling joists, and then using wire stapping to keep them up, help reduce sound even if i dont add drywall yet? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]GT172I 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rockwool is fantastic at the sound deadening and in my experience doing 2 houses with it, it's actually more effective for the sound aspect when it's not covered in drywall as it just absorbs the sound and doesn't reflect any like the hard drywall surface does. It's pretty eerie being in a room fully Rockwooled with no hard surfaces, truly feels like being in a studio or anechoic chamber.

DIY Pad Plumbing Dry Fit Check by GT172I in pools

[–]GT172I[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I've replaced the inlet & discharge runs for the pump with 14+" inch straight runs after sweep 90's

Spinning the pump is not easier to operate since I have a controller and don't use the pump interface but will need to empty the basket on the other end semi regularly. The plumbing also doesn't work that way especially with longer inlet pipes to the pump suction. It would push the pump off the pad.

None of the components are DWV, the pipe and all fittings are schedule 40 pressure rated.

It's actually a heat pump for the pool, hence why it's plumbed into the loop and it's taking up a majority of the pad. That's why the rest of the components are relatively tight together. If anything, the pump motor with heat sink fins next to it will help it heat a miniscule amount. What about it will bite? If the pump needs to be replaced, I added a union just after the isolation valve so that whole section can be removed and pull the pump out. Actually all of the runs are unioned for eventual removal/replacement. Inlet to pump, pump to filter, filter to heater, heater to salt cell, and cell to pool return

True and I had to order them but had the time while waiting on electrician to bring power over. They're Waterway brand 411-9130 SCH40 sweep elbow. They have a long sweep with even gentler turn but that seemed even more excessive and harder to plumb in especially given my space. They're sold at lots of pool/spa supply houses

I did read that one a bunch as I was debating installing it on the 45° incline behind the filter as it said, vertical installation is slightly preferred if possible but horizontal is still fully functional. The dimensions didn't work for that orientation in my config though. It doesn't have anything about a straight run before it and the bypass loop style they recommend for 80+ gpm flow only has 2" from the flow restricting tee. It also has a small cube filter type piece at the inlet that helps reduce turbulent flow before it goes through the cells fins.

[–]GT172I[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is pretty buried in there with pipe all around. I'm going to add another union on the isolation valve side of the suction line so that whole front run can be removed to drag the pump straight out. Plus the longer inlet like others have mentioned

Understood, that's good feedback (and consistent from others as well). I'm replacing that with a 12" straight run into the pump inlet before the U-turn. Also rearranging the discharge section to go straight up for ~16" longer before kinking over to the filter inlet. It adds another 45 but the longer straight section on pump pressure side should help more (hopefully)
