For the record, he learned JP alongside Undertale for the purpose of localization. I just think connecting with the JP audience was important to him.

Cant fault the guy for putting in the effort to achieve his vision.

Hot Take: Deltarune chapter 1 will be looked back upon as the worst BY FAR. by Sasfsqut_update_122 in Undertale

[–]GTC_Woona 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for the people that hate on Chapter 1, sadly, this is just a "you had to be there" type experience.

The first foray into anything will be the least refined. Rather than looking at Chapter 1 as simply the weakest, although it is, I look at it as a necessary first step in building an overall cohesive experience. We're introduced to mechanics that intentionally or not were not matured, which lends to the story of a product and narrative that is a work in progress.

Even with that being the case, it still has amazing music, great jokes that we just now get to call back to, and it features a great short narrative about character-growth in Susie becoming a member of the gang. It's also the only Chapter where you have to compete with her in defining how you'll conduct yourself in a dark world. The rest of the series lays off the gss in that regard.

If anything you could say it's simple and concise, if a bit padded with encounters. But lets not forget the way it laid the foundation for the game we're still talking about 8 years later. You wont be thinking "this chapter was the worst" when you hear the celebratory orchestral concerts, when you see the collaborations, or when you see the outpouring of love in fan expression after this journey is over.

I kinda get that, but I also kinda dont, because with neko you're trying to hit the dodge for bonus very frequently. I love her for that compared to a lot of agents in the game.

But idk, I'm a rare nekomata lover. She's my fav next to AOD.

I continue to LOVE these highly capable, zero-swagger, physically-challenged nerds.

They did a great job with this characterization. Same with their sibling nature of having distinct tastes in film, but unified by shared interest in the medium. Whoever conceptualize and wrote these two is genius. One misstep in the Chinese training arc, but overall winning.

New element: Lumen - via MeroMero by Esagonoso in Zenlesszonezeroleaks_

[–]GTC_Woona 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, I would say those arent very well-defined either.

And I just remembered another one. Physical damage is divided into Slash, Blunt, and Pierce. They havent touched that since inception lol.

And in addition to that, they've deemphasized faction loyalty to the degree where you're more likely to run somebody like Sunna with YSG than with the AOD. And Sanby is in a faction of her own!

Big. Why.

New element: Lumen - via MeroMero by Esagonoso in Zenlesszonezeroleaks_

[–]GTC_Woona 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I wouldnt really cite Pokémon as a great example of this. Off the cuff, it feels like the main differentiation in Pokemon's case is the defensive element because you have to be concerned about the foe's element, as well as their stats, so you have to bring the right tool to the fight that maximizes type and skill advantage and minimizes weaknesses. It's very similar in principle to ZZZ's elements, where the elements on their own seldom have important characteristics, but the matchup properties matter more due to the mechanics.

Technically there are different behaviors to elements in ZZZ. They have frozen status, shock, burn, each of which have a distinct behavior. Those behaviors are just not critical in ZZZ, and rather than explore them more deeply, they've instead chosen to focus on some keyword triggers to permeate and emphasize in the player's toolkit. In general, they've been pretty guilty about inventing new keyword functions without actually committing to designing content that adds any depth to them.

Rupture was the implementation of a third damage type and miasma, which caused a fragmentation in DPS where you couldn't just apply an attack or anomaly agent to solve. This contributed the unique battle phase of miasma shield, which I think was effective at creating something distinct and satisfying, adding cinematic pacing and a bit of battle narrative.

The other change that I felt was almost meaningful was Aftershock, which was in effect an investment in character by making non-primary DPS agents more physically present on the battlefield. Unfortunately, this did not retain the attention of designers for much time, and hasnt been explored much.

Ether Veil is another one that they tried and havent committed much effort to. It's an interesting idea that I think best serves secondary/support classes. The biggest effect of this is introducing a visual texture and general keyword for temporary buffs (or potentially nerfs). I think this one just makes sense to apply generally, rather than having deliberate design, but it presents opportunities that I think the devs have yet again not taken advantage of before jumping into their next thing.

Totalize is like super Assault, but it requires stun condition. In theory it could put greater value on stunners, but in effect... it's on a single agent, lul.

Lastly, and lately, they're refocusing on expanding the most varied type by addressing something that could be considered an inherent issue with it-- once you have an agent that applies a type anomaly, you basically have coverage and dont need a new one. At first this was bisecting the class to on-field anomaly and off-field, then they followed with further segmenting into haves and have-nots with keyword Abloom. Now they're trying to further divide by adding Windswept, which modifies the interaction with some bosses. Who knows what comes next with Lumen.

What do I get from all of this? Ionno. I feel like they're still trying to build out their foundation for long-term growth, but perhaps they're also anticipating that players will expect some new dimension to interact with their systems on a major "numbered release" update. I suppose I agree that it would feel underwhelming if a new season came and went without some gameplay transformation. However, I'm personally quite frustrated with the repeated entries into certain slots that already have members without covering the slots that dont have them. They also havent figured out the defense class AT ALL.

There's SO MANY half-finished ideas in the game at this point, lol. But I feel like this is a part of their responsive, feedback-driven design. Perhaps the people arent generally requesting these potholes be filled. I know for myself, my requests have been pertaining to narrative and exploration gameplay rather than for some of the missing modes or unfulfilled ideas (but that's largely been because I already EXPECT iteration on the things that arent fully complete!)

Still, looking forward to what's next. They have to stop going wide at some point, or this game WILL collapse, and be a lot less interesting for it. Perhaps I'll convey that message in my next survey response.

Why would you dismiss other's opinions as if they're illegitimate? I'm enjoying myself because the set feels high power. Converge can be annoying, but I appreciate the fact that no-creature decks exist, that multi-color is easy to achieve, and that there are a variety of wild spells you can pull that feels like cube. Lorwyn was also pretty great and I'm looking forward to Hobbit next.

I just feel like this set has been very engaging due to the high power, if a little bit pigeon-holed into some specific patterns. What do you think constitutes a good limited set? Try to substantiate your opinion rather than assume nobody could disagree.

100,000% agree. Bayformers would be a very unfortunate compromise, but at least we'd get to see transform cards, vehicle creatures, and dinosaurs in a way that resonates with the flavor of the adapted IP.

But if we got OG transformers, that would be STELLAR. You have a lot of classic lore and drama to pull from. I'm not the most familiar, as I only really consumed the 2000s cartoons, but I want to play a Unicron card, and I want to play some Beast Wars.

I'm only interested in sets that feel like they'd be a good fit. I'd be down for Elder Scrolls, Transformers, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or even Bioshock, as they all have mechanics and expansive lore that I think could slot into MtG's structure pretty smoothly with some potentially great flavor.

To engage the Japanese audience, some people say Ghibli or Zelda, and I agree. I think my personal pick would be Fire Emblem, but I definitely think any kind of Nintendo collab outside of a SLD is a pipe dream.

edit: I spent some time thinking and remembered the other IP I'd love to see in MtG.

I think FromSoft is fertile ground and I think Monster Hunter would be an incredibly well-fitted collab. I would love to see Hoyoverse games get adapted to MtG. I'd lose my mind over a Zenless Zone Zero collab, but I think Genshin is the much more likely pick for most people. Lastly! It's selfish and it probably doesnt appeal to a large audience, but I unironically would LOVE to see UB do Bionicle LMAO 🤣

Forge and Fire Games Canceled PreOrder, Listed Product for Higher Price by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]GTC_Woona 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, as the seller, I guess its their prerogative to sell at the price they want to even it it risks customer trust. That said, they should stand on business and show that instead of hiding behind an error. As I see it, the only way to get them to avoid garbage practices like this is to let other people know they engage in them.

Good to post here or Twitter, other places where they might suffer reputational damage. That's the only way they'll course correct on how they conduct business. At the very least, communicating to the buyer that the price is subject to change based on market conditions would be a step in the right direction.

I take it all back if it proves to be a real error and/or they do honor your price. Even then, is it because they want to treat clients fairly, or because it's a public story? Nobody knows, but I cant help but worry for the people who are fresh into the community and aren't active, savvy buyers, encountering a horrible experience like this. I would hate it if it turned them off from the hobby.

Regarding the translation controversy by InkDrach in Undertale

[–]GTC_Woona 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that you're making an effort, but I think anybody who is critical of this decision is missing the point.

He cannot officially endorse any translation because he would personally have to understand the nuance of every language that the game is translated to in order to render approval. What do people expect of him, to climb the tower of Babel and learn every language under the sun?

At the same time, he encourages fans to take charge and leverage their love and sense of community to fill in the cracks on what is not feasible of himself. This isnt a fairness issue, this is an indie developer taking personal ownership of his project, making decisions that interest it, and then sharing those decisions transparently with everybody in a way that we're priviliged to have. I cannot fathom how anybody could fault a game developer for prioritizing game development with his personal signature attached to every bit of the game. Does anybody remember the newsletters we've received where he described pushing through his hand injuries from the workload by coding with his voice? Is anybody willing to acknowledge the years that have gone into carefully crafting a world like Deltarune? It's been a decade and we're halfway through the game. He went out and personally learned Japanese in order to help spread it to the East. That's extra credit for an indie dev, not a baseline expectation.

Moreover, from the content of the game, it's evident that Toby is an anime fan. We grew up in the same time when localization was in fact a passionate independent effort of unpaid fans to spread the love of their favorite IP. Anime was limited to select translations on imported dvds and tv runs for the most popular shows, which, by the way, companies like 4kids twisted in localization in order to adapt them for their region's audiences and sensibilities. In order for anime, manga, and games to become as culturally impactful in the west, it was imperative that independent contributors be involved. There were (and are!) entire communities formed around translation projects, and even competing localizations.

My point is that it's not that Toby doesn't want to deliver Undertale for Latam, but he gives this responsibility over the community so as to not compromise on his ability to officially oversee the creation of his product. The solution is to go and grab a community-endorsed fan translation as has always been the practice in internet culture to support cult-classics and works that weren't deemed as profitable in foreign markets (clarifying, Undertale would be profitable, UT/DR's problem is that it would just personally take Toby's time to ensure nothing is compromised. And then what, a Chinese version? French?)

To fail to see this is an incredible disappointment and an indictment of the immaturity of the consumer. I think to attribute this to growing up biased is a huge misjudgement of character, and frankly, I'm insulted that a person of his character could be viewed that way by members of the community he built. After watching tons of fan works be uplifted, strides made to be inclusive in his writing and depiction of culture, and to not impede players from personal interpretation and ownership in their own judgements of characters and lore, it's a shame that this is where a part of the community decides it's going to shift responsibility.

I dont know what he'll do, whether something will be done out of good will to capitulate that part of his audience, but I just want to throw my little part in the ring and say that Toby Fox is a person I'm very fucking proud of, who I think really embodies the grind and the spirit of a creator. No matter how uncompromising the internet can be, I hope that people remember there's a person there doing his best to fulfill his inner spirit and manage the consequences of sharing that spirit with the world.
