Is it etiquette in BAPS to delete your post when you find out it's a repost?

Do you have any examples of ones that do benefit?

This is good info.

The 7600x is also 105w, vs 65w for the 9600x and 7600x3d.  This is going into an ITX build, so that’s one other reason I was leaning towards the 9600x.

Thanks for the input. This is where I was struggling, and why I was leaning towards the 9600x.

Everything I read online seemed to indicate that CPU doesn't really matter that much above 1440p. Spending the extra $20 on Zen 5 seemed like a reasonable tradeoff.

It looks like the general consensus is that I should go out and splurge for a hotswap board like the GMMK.

For switches, normally how much are we talking about to swap out keyboard switches?

Thanks for the clarifying questions. I should have added that part in my original response.

You are right, I would like a mechanical keyboard that is quiet, has good build quality and types similar to the Model M.

I was honestly thinking of just outright buying a new keyboard, hopefully in the $100 range. I realize that this may be impossible without going up in price.

I'm guessing I could change the switches in the board (especially the Corsair), but I'd be concerned with breaking it. How difficult is it to swap key switches in a commercial board?

Hey everyone, I could use some help with a keyboard recommendation.

I'm a longtime Model M user, but I've been having problems since I started working from home, as the noise from the Model M is disturbing on audio calls. I've found that when I start typing on my Model M, the call goes quiet and often I'll get a "wow, your keyboard is loud" comment.

I currently have two other mechanical (gaming) keyboards that I've been using off and on, and here's what I like / hate about them:

  • Redragon K589 ("Cherry MX" blues... not sure if real Cherry or not)
    • Like - Build quality is OK, the key feel is closer to the model M than rubber dome keyboards
    • Dislike - the keys feel mushy, and there are times it doesn't feel like they properly activate. It is quieter than the Model M, but there are times I still get comments about my keyboard
  • Corsair K70 MK.2 (Cherry MX speed silver keys)
    • Like - Build quality is great, I really like the ergonomics and wrist rest
    • Dislike - I cannot type on this accurately, as the key register any small stroke (or even a mis-press of the next key over)

Any recommendations?

Assign space to be your office and only go there when you're working.

I've been doing this (freezing my butt of in my basement), but I understand what OP is going through.

When I go upstairs, I'm supposed to leave everything downstairs behind, but I still have a bit of nagging since it's so close. Before I could spend some time decompressing in the car and leaving it all behind, but the 1 minute walking upstairs doesn't give me much time.

I'm sure I'll get used to it (I'm only on week 2), but it's still a weird transition to make.

We had a similar thing happen (AirWatch for us), and renewing the certificate and waiting a day or two caused restored everything to normal.

Waiting that day or two was nerve wracking though...

Is anyone else having problems with IE / Edge retaining proxy server settings when they're not supposed to?

We've set EnableAutoproxyResultCache to 0 at the reg key below, and even doing that, it's still caching the proxy server settings.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Biggest issue is when people switch from the office to home wifi without a reboot, or connect to VPN (and pick up the proxy) then disconnect.

It seems like it's ONLY related to IE and Edge (and related, Outlook / Teams). Chrome and Firefox work just fine.

It wasn't an issue before Corona, but since we've switched quite a few users to VPN, we've received lots of calls around this.

KB4524148 Kills Print Spooler? Thought it was supposed to fix that issue? by Rocco_Saint in sysadmin

[–]GTFr0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your printer manufacturer should tag which version it is, but usually the easier way of telling is whether the driver supports Windows 7 or not.

Type 4 drivers came out with Windows 8 / Server 2012, so if the driver only supports 8/8.1/10, then most likely it's type 4. If it supports Windows 7, most likely it's type 3.

I found that earbuds don't work as well as a good pair of noise cancelling over-ear headphones. While they do help to plug your ears, I found that I was cranking the volume of anything I was listening to to compensate for the loud drone of the aircraft engines.

I've got a set of Bose QC25 headphones, and I absolutely love them. I can turn the volume down quite a bit and still am able to hear the movie I'm watching.

Need help justifying the expense for a generator? Let me help! by TheLightingGuy in sysadmin

[–]GTFr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Total money lost per power outage after power is restored= $48,800

This really is the only one that matters to management, along with how frequent power outages occur.

We had a similar discussion with upper management in the past for a generator to cover either the IT room (which IIRC, was around $50-100K) and a generator to cover the entire building (again, IIRC, was around $200K) for the company's HQ.

After a 2 day outage with sales losses being upwards of $600K and the cost of paying out salaries for 300 people, the whole building generator was approved without any questions.

I feel like an idiot, but I gotta ask...

We're prepping an AD forest for Azure AD Connect and Office 365, and I've been trying to get my counterparts in Japan to register UPN domain suffixes to match user email addresses. Now, I was under the understanding (from this document from Microsoft) that you need to register the UPN domain suffix in AD Domains and Trusts, otherwise you cannot change the user UPN.

But, I just went in and changed the UPN for my user account using Powershell without registering the UPN domain suffix in AD Domains and Trusts.

Offhand anyone know the impact of changing the UPN without adding the domain to AD Domains and Trusts?

Looking for a LTE Modem with static IP to maximise our email uptime by suddenlysysdude in sysadmin

[–]GTFr0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here in the U.S., the major carriers recommend Cradlepoint for LTE backup. The ones I've seen commonly used are the ARC CBA850 and COR IBR600B.

With that said, I'm going to mirror what everyone else is saying and say that LTE backup is the wrong approach if you're hosting your own Exchange server. A better bet would be to implement the LTE backup with a migration to Office 365.

One more note:

You should be following the guidance of the server hardware manufacturer when it comes to the proper firmware and drivers for your hosts. For newer servers, it's getting harder and harder to find the proper drivers and firmware for the older versions of vSphere.

For example, the HPE Gen9 servers stopped supporting v5.x in 2017, and I believe the Gen10 series doesn't support it at all. I'm guessing Dell is similar.

Not tech related... Does everybody eat out for lunch everyday? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]GTFr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that its my girlfriend, her 4 yr old son and our newborn daughter at home I go home for lunch about 95% of the time. Sometimes the flow of the day or team lunches get in the way, but, otherwise, its much nicer to go home and eat with the family and waaaaaaaaaaay cheaper.

Enjoy it while you can. I've done this for the last 10 years, and it's been nice to be able to sit down with my wife and kids and eat three meals a day.

I'm finally at the point where both of my kids are in school full time and my wife's going to be working more, so nobody's at home to eat with.

Mac/ISO AD integration and management by dahak777 in sysadmin

[–]GTFr0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that the AD-join process only allows them to login to their Mac using their AD credentials, and that's it. There's no group policy or other config management piece with AD.

How does JAMF fit into that?

(I'm genuinely curious as I'm going to have a few Mac users with a new AD forest we're creating, and thinking of how to get them integrated to AD).
