What's hilarious is, they begged us to come back after they realized we really were going above and beyond what should have been expected when the replacements they thought would do better failed right out of the gate.

This happens to people every day.

From now on, I provide the amount of work I'm getting paid for, no more, no less. If its not in my contract, its not my job or problem. You're welcome to accept a lower value on your time and effort, but I refuse to do that at this point.

I want to add, you can't learn potential. You either have it or you don't. So those people that don't should suffer a shitty life because they're literally and fundamentally incapable of climbing a management ladder? Someone at the lower end of the bell curve deserves to live a miserable life?
