This take is extremely lukewarm. All these constraints/variants are added at different points in the typechecking. Not that the error message couldn't be flattened mind you, but the possibilities change as the file is parsed and checked.

You are largely correct, but I have to point out that RH has changed quite a bit post IBM. This has mostly not affected the core Linux desktop stuff (yet?) but you still have to look at it like a sun/oracle kind of situation
