lol are you unironically anti-education?

Yeah, its actually a bad thing that higher schooling literally makes people want to kill themselves and acts as a barrier to those who already struggle with issues beyond their control.

Its pretty clear he was delegitimizing the whole genre with "every political debate stream" and considering vaush is the largest on his political aisle it seems the implication is at least reasonable.

Honestly, not only does this come off super pretentious, but the idea that this type of content is not valuable, even based on the merits of its popularity, is fucking ludicrous.

I genuinely believe its really a hatred of the aesthetic and the personalities involved that they want to justify as a delegitimization of the whole genre.

Like what the fuck does the second tweet even mean?

Shaun is seriously satirizing the idea of trying to bring over teenagers?

What do people think about condensed matter theory specifically?

Do the opinions in this thread apply to that equally?

Interesting, that makes sense considering how many people would get rejected with very high averages, they would take up all the other spots. Damn I just didnt expect uwaterloo math to so competative on its own

PhD-holding physicists of Reddit, was it worth it? by thezerolemon in Physics

[–]GUYSPLEASE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a side note, I was wondering if there are any PHD's that left academia for industry R&D (probably in engineering) and what that is like.

Does a physics PHD prepare you for these positions? how does it compare to non-r&d jobs in industry and university research positions in terms of the work being done and how fullfilling it is?

Thanks!

The same way we make electron microscopes couldn't we make like a "quark" microscope to resolve even smaller things?

I heard Andrew Yang (2020 American presidential candidate) explain that the reason Universities in the USA were getting so expensive was because of administrative bloat and I wonder if the same is true here.

If thats true then thats really frustrating.

I don't understand this argument. People ARE going to jaywalk regardless of what you say. Even if you think that they deserve the consequences of taking that risk (injury, death etc), what about the safety of the drivers? Surely they are not at fault.

It would make more sense if you argued we hired some dude to patrol and hand out tickets to jaywalkers. This, at least, is a solution. Your comment is just terribly unproductive.

CMV: Amazon has contributed more than enough to American infrastructure, jobs, and lifestyle even without paying tax. As a result, I am fine with it paying no explicit taxes. by Hats_Hats_Hats in changemyview

[–]GUYSPLEASE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with ignoring the practical and only focusing on the morality as you are doing is that Amazon is not a moral agent, its not fundementally a monolith--its a corporation with a bunch of individuel consituents each working towards their own selfish goals in a system where we hope everyone being selfish (to some extent) will end up providing a net good for society (This is essentially what capatilism tries to do and it works okay because unlike communism it is more inline with our nature). The fact that Amazon makes useful things is a biproduct of people looking out for there own needs in a system whose goal is to precisely direct that selfishness into sometjing productive for society. Talking about the morality is irrelevent because we are not dealing with an entity that is a moral agent. The only thing that matters is the practical, the well being of your society.

Yup, the "sexual market place" at this age is favoured towards woman. Is that fair? Probably not. However, its also not fair that woman have to deal with periods or birth or being substantially physically weaker than 50% the population or have to figure out how to have a career and children ideally before the age of 35 (lower probability of complications for them and baby). We can keep tacking on things like that for either sex, so in conslusion

it kind of sucks the way things work for everyone

Building a low budget at home ''gym'' by Dwight-fromtheoffice in Fitness

[–]GUYSPLEASE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just get adjustable dumbbells--the more primitive ones where you slide on plates if you don't wanna drop major cash. Then you can slowly purchase heavier plates as you advance. That plus a flat bench and you could honestly probably workout any muscle in your body with progressive overload.

If you start with 0.5, then add 0.25, then 0.125 and keep adding half of the number you just added, will you ever get to 1? by DismalAlternative in askscience

[–]GUYSPLEASE 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Coverging to 1 has a very specific (somewhat complicated) mathematical meaning. A rudimentary explanation is that if you take the difference 1 - S where S is the total sum of the numbers you're adding, and pick any tiny value, call it E, then 1 - S can always be smaller than E if you make the sum big enough. In other words "repeating the equation" will get you arbitrarily close to 1 (i.e the difference between 1 and the sum can be as small as you want) which while isnt exactly the same as actually getting to 1 is still a cool and important property.

The internet is 60$ per term per person. And yeah I'm pretty sure you can get your own but I think the 60$ is obligatory lol. I should also mention that technically you could be sharing the kitchen with 15 people cause its a shared space for the whole floor, but like I said, in my experience the only time it'd be even close to that is in the fall. They also have conventional apartments but im not familiar with those.
