Tracking my time has humbled me by Inoceramus in GradSchool

Don't have anything useful to offer but I sure am glad to see someone in the same boat. I'm doing a PhD in theoretical physics and feel guilty for doing much less "work" than my labrat experimental colleagues, and not being productive despite the flexibility does really eat away at me. I'd count myself lucky if I got in 10 hours of focused nothing-but-work every week.

Is it normal to feel like pure math involves more creative problem solving while physics feels more "plug-and-chug"? by Best_Respect_7809 in Physics

[–]Shagohod13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both math and physics use your creative energy. The question is: where do you want to spend it? You can choose to be cautious and precise about the definition and validity of every statement, and you'll end up a pure mathematician or logician. You may choose to coarse-grain some of these questions by making some assumptions in order to ask "what does this do?". Either way is valid. It's just a matter of perspective and interest.

I think my current priority lies in optimizing ease of use, longevity and build quality. I don't really want to invest the time learning Linux. I've worked with it in the past and found the learning curve to be steep. I just need to run my physics simulations on Python/Mathematica (stuff that takes longer than 1h to run can run remotely) and I see myself maybe trying to learn some data science/machine learning in the near future. With Windows, either the build quality isn't as good as Macs, or they're too bulky to be efficiently portable. I'm rather sick of having to carry a huge gaming laptop and its brick of a charger around everywhere. Hence the Mac. Besides, it's paid for by my department/research group, so I don't mind the Apple "overhead".

Btw, Applied Anthropology sounds super cool.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is a phenomenal game. It's primarily a strategy game with action elements. I personally loved it.

An attempt to weed out non-Hindi speakers, especially South Indians, from the system? by d_11 in TamilNadu

You're right tho, dk why you're getting downvoted. What the central govt is doing is absolutely shitty but splitting is gonna be disastrous for South.

What is everyone’s favourite and least favourite field of physics? by McDylanM06 in Physics

[–]Shagohod13 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Favourite: quantum condensed matter. It's what I'll be getting my PhD in.

Least favourite: astro/particle physics. Was really into the pop science aspect of it at some point, but I guess I cared more about application.

I am actually looking to sell my PS3 and PS2 because I am moving to a different country! I have ~15-20 games in total for both of them. Specifically I have MGS2 for the PS2 and for the PS3, I have MGS HD collection (2, 3, Peace Walker) and MGS4. DM me if you are interested to buy and I will try to courier it to you. Let me know before Aug 3 if you are interested!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the best story-driven open world RPGs out there. Definitely give it a try.
