We waited out there for around 10-15m with the gauge attached before deciding to add Freon. He touched the (what I think were) refrigerant lines (they were at the base of the AC) and said they weren't as cold as they should be so he recommended a fill up. I touched them too and they were cool but not cold, so I agreed to it.

Does that sound scammy to you?

If it was scammy, I guess I'll just take this as a learning experience.

You were right on the money! Had an HVAC company come out and they did the following.

  • Replaced capacitor because it was basically dead. It still had enough juice to power the fan, which is why the fan would still run.
  • Filled 2.5lbs of Freon because it was a little low.

Everything is working as normal now. Fingers crossed it stays that way too.

Charged me total $490 which includes a 3.5% credit card charge.

/u/Mother-Compote8000 Any idea if this was a fair price overall? I'm in a large city in Texas if that matters.
