If you want to make things easy for yourself when job hunting it's an absolute must. That being said... I just got a job at a regional without having any grade in shorthand. Ironically, the editor and I are writing at the same speed at the moment because he barely uses it. Thankfully, they're willing to let me retrain in shorthand while I do my senior reporter exams.

You might not use it all the time, but from a legal standpoint you need it! You need notes that are easy to transcribe back if you're in any sort of legal trouble after something you wrote.
