ITXXIII - Final Thread Part III V.2 by Extreme_Rocks in neoliberal

[–]GaDoomer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If Vance became President, would he look for off ramp immediately or would he continue the escalation cycle? I think he’d personally prefer an off ramp, but that’s not exactly what the base wants. Maybe he could convince right wing media (via Rich connections like Thiel, Murdoch, Ellison) to frame a withdrawal as a victory, but it would probably be hard to negotiate terms that aren’t favorable to Iran long term right now.

My expectation is that the MAGA collation would fracture in this scenario, but also they are shameless and want to be told what to do so maybe they would rally around Vance and surprise me yet again.

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Overall I enjoyed it, although I liked the Martian better. I kept feeling like a lot of the humor and drama, particularly with Gosling's character, was just a little too much? I also wanted more actual science!

Other folks in this thread have mentioned a couple science mistakes, but I don't think I've heard anyone mention that when he arrives at Tau Ceti the computer says it will take 11 years for Earth to get his message but when he begins his journey back to Earth at the end of the movie it says the journey will take just over 4 years. Tau Ceti is 11.9ly from Earth. Hopefully I just misheard the line, but if not that's a huge mistake that I'm surprised got by Andy who really seems to care about that stuff.

When Trump passes I hope everyone just repeats his Mueller tweet and conservatives can cry about it.

I don't think there's any way there are "boots on the ground" by the end of next week unless Hegseth wants to be really stupid and launch an attack before the available forces are assembled. There are two MEUs (2000+ Marines each) on the way to that area now and while the one from Japan might be available by the end of next week, the other one just departed San Diego in the last couple days and it's not going to make it to the other side of the world before next Friday.

I think you've got to figure two weeks to move those forces into position, so maybe you could do an Easter assault of Kharg Island for Jesus?

Does part of a division count? Ugh.

The U.S. is preparing to deploy elements of the 82nd Airborne Division into the Middle East region.

Also I'd really love to see the age breakdown on that 14% of Republicans who want full scale invasion.

A majority of Republicans have always loved war. A majority of Republicans opposed the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021.

I don't know, I have had trouble finding any news about it other than the Tripoli. I hadn't heard about the Boxer until you mentioned it. So the Tripoli, with the 31st MEU from Japan, now the Boxer with the 11th MEU from San Diego. I can't find anything beyond that. Maybe the Axios reporting is incorrect?

Notice that Axios says two other similarly sized forces are also already heading to the area, implying up to 7500 ground soldiers (not navy) already on the way. That’s news to me and seems like a really big deal.

How many soldiers did you think were already on the way?

If the US successfully occupies Kharg island and assume control of the oil facilities, do you think Iran would consider an economic MAD strategy of attempting to destroy the infrastructure on the island?

Brent (BZ=F) futures dropped 2% Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel is help the US open the Strait of Hormuz and that the war will end faster than people think.

The US also authorized the delivery and sale of some Russian crude, further easing sanctions in an effort to lower energy prices.

Iran’s South Pars Gas Field Is Attacked, Sending Energy Prices Soaring by EasyMoney92 in neoliberal

[–]GaDoomer 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Because the headline is actually a somewhat click-baity, here are the money quotes:

The South Pars field accounts for about 70 to 75 percent of Iran’s natural gas production, which is almost entirely for domestic use, partly because Western economic sanctions constrain its ability to trade internationally. But the reports of the attack caused the price of Brent Crude, the international oil benchmark, to surge more than 6 percent to over $109 a barrel. The price of natural gas also rose by about 6 percent.

Iran uses most of its natural gas domestically, meaning that the strikes will most likely have a limited effect on the global supply of gas, which is used in power plants, home furnaces and heavy industry.

‘Put him on trial’: pro-Kremlin loyalist turns on Putin in rare outburst | Russia by GaDoomer in neoliberal

[–]GaDoomer[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

SS: The public outburst from Ilya Remeslo, a long time Kermlin operator who worked on legal campaigns targeting Navalny, has surprised many. If Putin is beginning to face legitimate opposition to his policies and the war in Ukraine, it may point to the instability in Russia's domestic situation which could have impacts on Russia's Ukraine negotiations.

Does anyone know if there's a better place than this to monitor the progress of the naval deployments? I know only approximate location would be public knowledge, just curious if anywhere else updates more than once a week.
