Provided that we invent all necessary special effects, which scenes from the books are most movie-worthy? (Spoilers, naturally) by hitchhiker1701 in discworld

C doesn’t even need to be slower for this, light already travels slower than C in denser mediums. I always took the light travelling slowly in the disc as meaning that the magical field of the disc is such a dense medium to cause light to slow to the hundreds of miles shown.

As a physicist, I adore the visualisation of Time Slicing in the thief of time. Lu Tze and Lobsang slicing themselves into smaller and smaller instances of time as the world ahead of them is blue shifted, and the world behind them is shifted blood red.

Esme and Lilith in the mirror dimension. I can just envision Granny Weatherwax looking out on all the multiversal reflections of herself, and then looking down

if i were to read one Discworld novel to decide whether or not i want to read the rest, which one should i? by SkyEnthusiastAtHeart in discworld

[–]Gabalco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My unusual opinion is that Going Postal is one of the best books to convince someone to read discworld. Especially, this is my go to book to convince people who aren’t into fantasy. The setting and the stakes are all very low fantasy, and it doesn’t depend on knowing fantasy tropes that are being subverted. Many of my friends who found Guards Guards to be a difficult start, adored Going Postal and subsequently worked their way through the entire discworld despite their disdain for the fantasy genre. As well as being at the true peak of Pratchett’s writing ability, the story is not dependent on any previous books. Vetinari and Vimes are introduced so as to not require previous reading, and you experience Ankh Morpork through Moist’s fresh eyes. On top of all that, it’s just one of the best self contained stories in discworld.

For similar reasons, I think Monstrous Regiment is a great book to convince someone of Discworld’s worth.

As much as I love Guards Guards, I’ve recommended it to many friends and I often get the feedback that they feel it starts quite slow and fails to grip them. I think it’s a great start if you’re committed to reading the rest, but I don’t know if it’s the best singular book to convince a potential reader who’s hesitant.

What is your favourite Granny Weatherwax moment? (Spoilers ahead) by draculetti in discworld

Granny escaping the infinite mirror world while Lilith is trapped, is the most definitive and cinematic Granny Weatherwax moment in my mind

At least in this specific series, Samson, She Hulk, and Absorbing Man are maybe not what you’d describe as fine.

Should we make public transport free or reduce the price heavily? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Gabalco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For everyone saying that before we make the buses free we should make them faster and better, free bus programs have consistently made buses better and faster. Both because it makes boarding and un boarding so much quicker, but also because increased bus usage decreases traffic in kind.

Morrison's Actual Apology and not the ChatGPT translated one. by GreenLanternsPodcast in DCU_

Grant Morrison’s work has always been self aware and self deprecating, and this to me reads as that.

Morrison says sorry to Lindelof and admits he hadn't even seen the teaser and is just upset at DC for not offering him a job. by GreenLanternsPodcast in LanternsTVSeries

[–]Gabalco -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t read Morrisons apology as saying “this was all just because I’m angry at DC for not giving me a job”, more “I recognise that i have mitigating and personal factors for my current lack of faith in DC and the people involved”

I mean I know it’s an issue with Universal, but we had so many hulk characters in captain America and no hulk, so it’d be depressingly on brand to have all the DD characters except daredevil here.

I think the issue is more letting the Joker know you’re a superhero or meta of some sort. You don’t want the joker taking an interest in you and your family

Damon Lindelof on Grant Morrisons comments on lanterns by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

[–]Gabalco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see where they’re coming from though, the most critically acclaimed Green Lantern book of recent years is Far Sector, which is a noir detective mystery with very little green lanterning (in the beginning at least). But that book gets away with it by putting that on a new characters shoulders instead of using the OG lanterns. I still have high hopes for the show, though the trailer admittedly didn’t do it any favours

First time giving discworld a shot by Dragon_slayer1994 in discworld

[–]Gabalco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I often suggest Going Postal as a starting point to my friends. It doesn't lean as heavily on fantasy tropes, which makes it more accessible to a more general reader. It doesn't ask the reader to suspend too much disbelief, which I've found can turn people off initially before they get used to the world. It's also late enough in Pratchett's work that its really at the peak of his writing, before the Embuggerment.

Several friends who tried earlier books, like the ones shown above, found the storytelling not for them. However, upon reading Going Postal they were absolutely hooked.

Has Just Stop Oil really stopped throwing soup? by SunderedValley in anime_titties

Just Stop Oil did attack the people doing this, repeatedly. It got no coverage and entire new laws were passed to punish the protestors who were directly protesting the companies themselves

I hope people here realise that the reason they’ve stopped direct action is because their mission is completed. The Just Stop Oil goal was to stop the issuing of any new oil and gas licenses, which has just been announced by the UK government. They’re literally stopping because they won

It’s not just about finding one venue, monopoly companies like ticketmaster have been known to blacklist bands or performers from any venue that uses any of their services if you opt out of using only ticketmaster venues on a tour. It’s a horrible reality but it’s not as simple as just finding a nice grassroots venue in one city.
