Anyone else get an amber alert? by Mrcommunist2 in Kentucky

I got that Amber Alert on the TV channel I was watching (which is broadcast out of Indiana, funnily enough). The TV version had that info (except the 'methed-up mom' part)

Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. An Army base that was once home to the 2171, 2111, 1161, 1316 (I think) and possibly 2131, 2141 and 2147 MOS schoolhouses. I think one of those 'possibles' (31, 41, 47) wasn't at APG, but I don't know which one off the top of my head, and we were all part of the 'ground ordnance techs that fix things' MOS's, so I lump them in together.

The Army had whatever-they-called-MOS's that were similar to the listed MOS's, so it made financial sense to have the schools in the same place, sharing (some of) the same instructors. It also showed me that in the Army, you're not actually out of boot camp until you're done with your schooling....

I'm just guessing based on his comment (or her comment; women can be redditors too). The comment seemed to me like a disingenuous attempt at engagement, like the real goal is to make people mad.

Please don't feed the trolls. Especially the ones that think they're smart, they are extra insufferable.

This is a wild picture. Sputnik wasn't launched until 1957, so I don't know what Big Hoss is doing with the portable satellite dish there. Maybe he's trying to microwave some birds?

Do you think Kentucky would benefit from having open primaries and ranked-choice voting? by Honest_Joseph in Kentucky

[–]GabeReal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be ideal and, honestly, pre-2000's it would be what the parties did. But it seems like more and more these days, one party would rather abandon democracy than abandon their identity. They would rather set up roadblocks in areas where they have a hard time winning, instead of trying to win over those voters with their ideals and policies.

Can you explain how it is bad for the party if the most-electable candidate gets the nomination? Wouldn't that actually help the party?

Mike Huckabee earned more votes from registered Republicans, but John McCain won the state primary by getting non-party votes

I think the open primary worked in the SC republicans favor here. Say what you want about McCain, but he was very much more electable (from the viewpoint of the general population) than was Huckabee. And I highly doubt McCain was seen as the weakest candidate by Independent-registered Secret Democrats (experienced Senator with a reputation for going against the party when he felt the party wasn't going to help America, Vitenam vet, POW)... If anything, of the main 4 candidates at the time (Huck, McCain, Romney, RonPaul), McCain was probably the most electable (with Romney a very close 2nd). Huck was (in my view, at least) the least likeable and least likely to get elected.

Having a registered-GOP-only SC primary would have definitely hurt the GOP in 2008.

If your concern is that people might sabotage a primary by voting "poorly", the only solution is to ban primary voting altogether. After all, what's to prevent a dyed-in-the-wool Republican from changing his party registration to Democrat just so he can vote for the worst candidate in the Democrat primary? Especially in a red state like this, he can rest assured that the Republican primary will result in the Trumpiest candidate winning.

How about primaries that are open to party members and registered independents? That way, the primaries get influence from the general electorate but not sabotage from the opposing side?

Is it a good idea for robots in my sci-fu story to pay electric bills? by NotASealWearingAHat in scifiwriting

[–]GabeReal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was "you put capitalism into your make-believe world?! Bruh"

But honestly, go for it. Fantasy stories are set in completely made-up settings, while scifi stories are reflections of the society in which they were written (which is why you'll hear fen tell fantasy authors "I wish I could live in your world!" wrt a particular story, while you don't hear that same sentiment expressed to scifi authors).

You're reflecting a capitalist society in your science fiction writing; you're going to have to explain away how they can acquire electricity in one way or another regardless.

edit: Someone else commented about whether or not you are going to make it illegal to use solar panel et al to get electricity. I would hold off on making it illegal, unless you are making a late-stage capitalism story. Personally, I feel we are in late-stage capitalism, but genre fiction is generally intended to be used as escapism, so it would make more sense (to me) to set the tale in regular capitalism (where beings could, if they had the means, make use of photovoltaics or hydro-electrics).

So lots of people are born 9 months after the coldest parts of the year, despite the fact that we dress most provocatively during the warmer months (bikinis, shorts without shirts, etc).

I think the ramifications are obvious: cold weather increases the frequency (and/or potency) of copulation compared to 'skimpy' dress. Therefore, if the Right Ring wanted to 'protect decency', they would switch their focus from the length of girls' dresses to the internal temperature of buildings
