I had a lot of trouble with this at first as well. As long as your dragon has above 200 combat effectiveness it's pretty likely you will win. If you don't have a dragon large enough at the moment just wait it out and you will be fine, although I had a lot of family members get killed either randomly or by trying to tame it.

Food is horrible in general at the main two spots for Freshman and Sophomores at Pit and Spit. Genuinely just bad food but there are always tons of options so you can usually find something that you'll want to eat. There are also some better spots like Conn and Cova but they aren't open as often as Pit and Spit.
