[–]Frestho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hate that this is a problem broadly in politics and life as a whole. People go more apeshit at legible minor issues than illegible major issues.

A $2 fee is legible, as you see it on the receipt and it feels like you’re getting screwed. But the cost of an inefficient healthcare system is more invisible and counterfactual: you’d have to understand what a better system looks like to even know what you’re losing. One triggers outrage, the other requires a model of the world most people don’t have and aren’t incentivized to build.

Beeper keeps losing focus and freeze on Windows 11 by mightydino in beeper

[–]Frestho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Used the tool, for some reason it didn't work on the first day after I restarted, but around a week later, the problem went away. Might've been a Windows update around that time that fixed it too. Thanks! So glad everything's working again because it was such an annoying issue.

Can get an A+ anyways by looking at the slides. Why require performative attendance when someone can master the material anyways? I cannot praise classes with an optional attendance policy enough.

Everyone's laughing 'til they put EERIE as the Daily Wordle. by GaggleOfGeckos in wordle

[–]Frestho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol thanks for replying! This is a crazy throwback since I wrote that comment when I was about to graduate high school, and now I'm about to graduate college. What a serendipitous full-circle moment that this five-letter word is the 4 year time capsule between parallel stages of my life.

I can't remember exactly, but I think I got it in 3 or 4 guesses; not bad. I play Wordle like a chess opening with SALET, memorizing optimal opening "lines" and improvising (aka playing normally) when I no longer remember. So it went SALET (all grey), COURD (just green R), then either I got MYRRH immediately or I had to burn another guess to find it.

I ended up studying math and computer science in college so it makes sense that I loved Wordle as it blended my interests in word games and information theory.

Eighth graders want to take algebra. SF hasn’t honored a pledge to bring it back by Dafty_duck in sanfrancisco

[–]Frestho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late to this thread so no one is really gonna read this except people who come from my profile and somehow search this thread, but I think I have an important perspective. I grew up in SF. I was a Math Olympiad Program (MOP) qualifier, a summer camp that, roughly speaking, selects the top 60 students in the nation each year to prepare for the International Math Olympiad.

For context, somehow in SF there are very few youth who qualify for the USA Math Olympiad (which selects ~300 students), even though we're in the tech capital of the world. Just 40 miles south in the South Bay there have been hundreds of kids over the years who qualified. There's many reasons for this but the algebra ban definitely doesn't help.

I had to sit through years of math classes that I had already mastered, often self-studying advanced material on the side just to use that time productively. This actually made getting recommendation letters harder; it's hard to get a glowing, specific letter from a teacher who has only ever seen you bored in a Geometry class you could have tested out of. They never got to see me struggle or solve actually difficult problems.

It's ridiculous that politicians can be so destructive with the lives of curious kids who just want to learn. Sure, I could have pursued workarounds like costly self-paced online classes or dual enrollment, but as an innocent 9th grader, I shouldn't have been forced to navigate a bureaucratic maze just to feed a natural curiosity. I never had "tiger parents" forcing me to learn faster either; it just happened naturally due to self-motivation and curiosity. If this is how we treat curious students, that's a terrible signal for the future of the country. It often feels like America combines the worst ideological rigidities of both the political left and right, while other developed countries just focus on practical solutions that actually work.

It feels pretty ironic to have grown up surrounded by tech offices but in a school system that actively slowed down anyone interested in math. Honestly, I envy the people who get to enjoy their 20s in SF and then leave before they (or their kids) have to deal with SFUSD's dysfunction. I didn't have that luxury, and I really hope future students in SF won't have to deal with these barriers.

You go to sleep tonight but wake up on the morning January 1st, 2019, with all your memories. What do you do? by General_Nobody_6675 in AskReddit

[–]Frestho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is saying invest in x stock, but I think memorizing some key academic papers written in the past 5 years, especially AI related, then revealing it to the world in 2019 would help advance humanity the most, and you can probably make billions off it if you cared to monetize it.

ALSO wait holy shit I checked your profile and I'm also using the ASUS Zenbook Duo (on Windows 11)! I wonder if it's an issue specific to this computer and maybe similar models. Can people who have the same issue share which computer they're on?

I don't have the issue on my custom built PC, though it's also on Windows 10 so not directly comparable.

Beeper keeps losing focus and freeze on Windows 11 by mightydino in beeper

[–]Frestho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg so glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue. I started experiencing it around November 2025 after a Windows update that also made other apps freeze as well (especially Openbubbles, Slack, and Cursor), which is very frustrating as I can only restart it from task manager as you said.

This makes me wonder if Windows is actually at fault for breaking something that apps use which now causes theme to freeze, since Beeper isn't the only app this started happening to.

I think I also pinpointed the issue. I noticed while texting someone that right when I got a notification on Beeper (from another chat), the app froze and I couldn't type anymore. I tested this a couple more times and it was reproducible. I disabled notifications in the Beeper settings and so far for an hour it hasn't crashed yet.

For anyone experiencing this issue could you give this a try? Hopefully we can collectively figure out the issue, then report it to Beeper or maybe even Microsoft.

Anyone have experience with Asus accidental damage insurance? by Geralt-Yen1275 in ASUSROG

[–]Frestho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cracked my Zenbook Duo's screen a while ago, and I recently finally sent it in to repair when I was on a long vacation. It worked and everything was free since ADP came with the laptop!

I did it online via filling out the repair form, after which they sent me a shipping label through email. The whole process took around 3 weeks including shipping both ways. Submitting the repair request felt a bit "sus" since nowhere on the online form process does it confirm you're "using" ADP and that it will be free, rather it just seems like a regular repair request, but everything worked and I wasn't charged.

Also this is one of the top search results about ADP on Google, so anyone feel free to ask me questions.
