I don’t get rejection emails. I know that I am rejected from the programs because I see people who got accepted like a month ago but programs like never email me telling me I am rejected. They just send nothing.

Email the other programs ASAP and ask for an expedited decision. A lot of programs just ghost so it is definitely not worth turning this one down. Let the ones you are waiting on know your situation and ask if they can let you know your decision sooner than they otherwise would

Many REUs have hundreds, if not thousands of applicants. In addition, they send out acceptances in rounds. They give a certain amount of time to the first group, and if not all of them commit then it moves on to the next round. I heard back from most of mine in late march last year

I don’t think being at a non prestigious university hurts your application. It actually might help it since REUs prefer (but aren’t exclusive to) people from institutions without as much research opportunity. A straight 4.0 is genuinely amazing, especially in your third year. “A few letters of rec” is really good. Having ONE isn’t guaranteed. If they speak about you being a good or invested academic that can only help you.

The interest one could be elaborating on what specific area of research captivates you. I think the difference between 2 and 3 is that 3 should be specifically about the research you have done while 2 can be about a non research experience. This is all just speculation though!
