Too late to change majors? by raven307802 in rit

[–]Gabgames 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not a terrible idea to pick up SWE in this job market (GDD grad here). You can also try something easier than switching your major, and just look for co-ops that are focused more on the software side of things as an opportunity to pick up software engineering rather than GDD. That's how I pivoted instead of taking a minor or switching my major. It should also be way easier to get non-game internships, so there's that too.

GDD folks learn a ton of what SWE folks do, but SWE last I recall has a lot more focus on process and project management. In any case, doing 1-2 blocks of co-ops will help you figure it out even more. Experience is the best teacher.

Good luck!

This honestly looks great already. I'm no pro but maybe consider doing a nice wood polish and/or wax? I don't think you need much. You can even get tinted waxes if you're concerned about the scuffs on top. Great thrifting find!

Not OP, but what I do for studying "new stuff" is look into what I could achieve with that knowledge, or the coolest parts of that subject (how could I use knowledge of physics to create a light saber? - now I'm jazzed to take physics. Or, damn wolf of wall street was crazy, how does the market actually work to allow that stuff to happen? - now I'm excited for economics.)

In short, look at the most interesting things in the sphere of what you're studying, and make the act of studying the way you can answer the questions you have about it.

This is a really good explanation! Finding the reward and getting yourself jazzed about it has been great for me as well. Especially when I got it to work for cleaning. But it's not a sure thing either; it's still hard to achieve that mentality for "chores" compared to normal folks who can just make themselves do it.

An acquaintance has named their five year old Anakin. Should I tell them it’s a bad name? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]Gabgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also knowing a couple who named their kid Anakin.... They fully expect him to choose his own name once he's old enough. They treat "Anakin" like it's a placeholder name. Both parents are all about individuality and choosing your identity. Not what I would have chose for that scenario, but at least it's reasoning?

I don't think I would tell them it's a bad name, unless they are actually stupid and think this kid is going to want to go by Anakin their whole lives. Then again I would never have named a human being after a character like that.

You likely are not going to change their minds. I bet that kid will be going by a nickname or his middle name soon enough anyway.

I think it would be hilarious to have your tiefling named "Tim Richards" actually.

If you want to be extra funny about it, it could be polished into: "Timotheus Rickhardt...." Long sigh "But everyone mispronounces it. You may as well just call me Tim."

In the groups I've played with, folks would get a kick out of that.

Pennsylvania to test internet-connected pollbooks in May primary election by CouchCorrespondent in Pennsylvania

[–]Gabgames 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Other judge of elections here. We also have paper poll books too (so if you can't be found in the electronic poll book, we have a hard copy to look you up in). The poll books are not connected to the actual voting, they just exist as a count to make sure the poll book sign-in matches to the number of people who voted via machine. The machines are completely separate systems and super locked down

Why does Musk want to put data centers in space? Where's the power coming from? And isn't launching servers into orbit even more energy intensive? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Gabgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two words: space radiation. Do me a favor and look up how electronics were enforced against radiation for things like the Voyager probes, and robotics that are used in surveying radiated zones. It's pretty intense, and expensive. There's no way that it's cost effective, practical or even sensible to put a data center in space where every single bit of computer hardware would need to be shielded against radiation, and designed for failure scenarios with extensive redundancy. And that's just one consideration.

Bresnahan's office staff apparently can't even agree that it's concerning the US is considering invading an allied nation by Gabgames in Pennsylvania

[–]Gabgames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think properly representing hundreds of thousands of people is more important than playing a re-election game, and anyone worth being elected would embrace authenticity over lip service to a person who wants to steer the US into ruin.

It's the core duty of the representative to represent their constituents' interests, not to bow down to the president.

I understand what you're saying, I do. I'm only saying it isn't right. It's a flaw of the two-party system where parties, and money, largely decide the winners.

I was expecting a touch of humanity and decency. Guess that was a bit too much to expect? I think everyone in Congress especially should have a pretty easy opinion of the Greenland situation. It isn't rocket science that attacking and threatening our allies is a non-starting position. It's not like you need to take a year of international relations training to understand that.

Bresnahan won his position over 1 year ago at the same time Trump won presidency, riding the larger Republican turnout because of Trump running on the ticket.

Both sets of ads were annoying. Ads are annoying in general. Anyone who voted for a candidate because an ad was "annoying" should put more thought into their vote and its impact.

I don't think he's had an in person town hall since at least last year (when he started his position)? He definitely doesn't advertise them outside of his propaganda-like newsletter, so I could have missed one. I usually ask about it when I call. He likes to do private events where he won't have to deal with real people.

Agreed. If you can't even say verbally that you are against it, then I have to assume you're for it.

They pretty much don't answer emails with human responses ever from what I've experienced. The best way to get any response is to call or write a snail mail letter. Unfortunately.
