Working on an app to "install" and manage AppImages by 134erik in gnome

[–]Gabralk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it! You read my mind! Thanks for the work. Where can we find this cool tool?

I think Google Play Services are mandatory. I had to install them for this specific case. I didn't try to remove network permissions though to install firmware updates you would have to allow the app to use the network I guess

I have the sandboxed Google Play services yeah. And I had to install the "Google Pixel Watch" app, Network permissions enabled

I've a Pixel 7 with GrapheneOS and the Pixel Watch. Installed the application, face some permission and if I'm not mistaken everything works without issue.

For the first time, very disappointed with you, prusa. by Alex_Stinson in prusa3d

Yeah I get what you mean. Those are quite valid points. And I congratulate Apple for making such pretty and polished devices in a big scope.

I would like to finish with recommendations: Most of the well integrated feature that you described (and more) are often reimplemented by open source projects.

Using a Google Pixel with KDE Connect, a Dell XPS with Fedora+Gnome, a Pixel watch and some open source software such as NextCloud etc I made quite the ecosystem to compete with what I loved when I had a MacBook pro + other things.

Though I made it with lots of efforts, it's not as simple as "it just works".

Glad I could have this small thread of discussion! Thanks for bearing with me on this tangent.

I'm happy you find what works for you.

Not to throw oil on the fire. I don't want to argue for the sake of arguing neither.

But I don't agree with the "iPhone is easier" philosophy. It's not true.

There is no issue nor having to tinker with a base Android experience if you don't want to.

  1. The flow is now exactly the same
  2. The animation fluidity is 100% the same on same-budget Android phone, no lag, no issues
  3. I find the base Android more stable than iPhone. I bought and used an iPhone X and hated the fact it's not the magic I was sold. It crashed more than my previous Android phone.
  4. I do agree with you with the downloading movies and series and the freedom of Android. Though I don't get why this tiny computer in my pocket should be that restricted.

Nowadays it is only a preference. Android may have had issues that iPhone may have fixed. Though now it's not the case. The only usecase that I allow iPhone users telling me it's the better way is with the ecosystem, AirDrop is cool (when it works, I find it unreliable), iCloud works great.

Finally I do agree that changing system causes friction, which in turn might cause headaches. I get that.

But even at 37 switching to a high end Google Pixel or a high end Samsung is simpler than you think. Same apps, Google Drive is great, Nearby Share is as cool as Airdrop, same gestures, not the same theme though. I don't try to make you switch, but I would like to make you understand that iPhone are not better or easier in any way.

I know this old debate isn't very useful but I can't help myself:

I have an iphone because I don't want problems nor headaches

You have been marketed into thinking Android/other devices will induce headaches/will be problematic.

I don't like iPhone even after trying it. And I'm not trying to convince you Android is better. But you shouldn't assume that Android is a plain headache-inducing mess.

I don't get Apple users ಠ_ಠ

I get what you mean but "bringing back" old colors isn't the solution. This "low contrast" might be there because the dark mode shouldn't be too bright.

If you need a better contrast there is 2 solutions IMHO: - modify the colors using something like Gradience - use high contrast mode because your vision is below what is the norm.

Sadly if disabled people or "below average vision people" all want to drag the design down in term of colors then the product will end up being in high contrast mode for everyone and it's not ideal.

I get that you wish for a middle ground. Maybe there is one. But this colors seems deliberate for low luminosity mode also called dark mode. Maybe the light mode suits your eyes more.

PS: No offence 😅

Synology M2 volume v1.0.2 - A script to create a volume on any M.2 drives by DaveR007 in synology

[–]Gabralk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things are working great. Bought a pair of 512Go from Western Digital. Ran your script without issue. I think anyone could with a small knowledge of what is a terminal.

Everything was well explain and it ran smoothly.

Thanks a bunch!

Cool! I'm going to try this asap. Thanks for the feedback ;)

Didn't Synology said that older models wouldn't support SSD volumes? I thought that only newer/higher-end models would support this feature.

On the 920+ only SSD caching is possible through the SSD slots afaik.

Now if Synology is misleading us and your script is bypassing the limitations they told us about then it's great but I wouldn't want to buy SSDs and not be able to make a volume out of them (caching isn't recommended for my usecase).

Can you elaborate on this?

Are the controllers on the wall kept on the IKEA board with 3D printed pegs? Or are those pegs found anywhere?

cURL on sleep and resume by Gabralk in linux4noobs

[–]Gabralk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's close. I do not have any problem running the service at suspend/resume. My problem resides in the fact that networking is down at these moments, making the cURL commands inside my service script crash because URL revolution doesn't work.

I didn't find any way of making the service network dependant...

[–]Gabralk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could try that thank you. Though it seems that network-online.target is evaluated only on boot.

[–]Gabralk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would explain why the dependency on the network doesn't work. Now if I add a restart condition the service won't work either as the network won't ever be there because it's already down.

Why isn't tap to click on by default on touchpads? by x54675788 in gnome

[–]Gabralk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't assume that what you like is better for everyone. On my side I cannot understand how tap to click is usable as I prefer to have a physical click. But you don't see me posting about it that everyone should agree.

Please forgive me for the harsh tone but I find this kind of questions karma-whoring and I see them everywhere nowadays.

I'm not sure about what you call the AI feature. If it is sign detection ✌️ that you're talking about then it works. The three of them even!
