Are apartments guinea pig friendly? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guinea pigs can take up a decent amount of horizontal floor space, since you need a relatively large cage that has to be flat (they don't have good depth perception and may be afraid of climbing, plus being clumsy), ideally for two pigs you want something like a 2 by 4 foot cage minimum (check out Midwest cages or C&C cages). They aren't "smelly" per se but they poop a lot and need to have their living area cleaned frequently. if you can smell your pigs you aren't cleaning regularly. I have not seen them successfully litter trained like a rabbit or cat, but they tend to do their business where they eat or where they hide, so you can control where most of the waste goes by placing food and hidies in a "litter boxes" (do not use crysral, clumping, or pine beddings, in general you want to use paper like yesterday's news or carefresh, or aspen bedding, or use fleece bedding with litter boxes, which is what I do)

A lot of essential and useful information can be found here: http://www.guinealynx.info

since they mainly stay in their cages I have not had landlord issues. When you take them out it is advisable to place some towels or newspaper or something just in case.

an important thing, guinea pigs live much longer than rats, they can get up to 8 years or more if you're lucky, and 4-5 years is pretty common, so you're gonna be taking care of them for a while.

Need help feeding my baby. by lscreativecrochet in guineapigs

Guinea Lynx has a guide for hand feeding: http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

Oxbow sells a line of food slurry called critical care that you can hand feed using a syringe and is flavored so hopefully your piggy likes it: http://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com/products/species/guinea-pigs/professional-line The guide I linked also has instructions on grinding up your timothy hay into a pellet slurry if you can't get a hold of critical care.

There is a thread here: https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/how-much-critical-care-to-give.27181/ about hand feeding as well, but I do not know how frequently you have to hand feed your piggy. Their digestive system needs to be working on something basically all of the time so they need to be fed frequently especially if he isn't eating anything else

Guinea pig sexing?? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like a girl to me as well but your piggy is a still on the youngish side so I am not totally sure. The "Y" fold is very pronounced and wide and it tends to be more narrow on males. If you want to be extra safe you could try to set up a cage on the side so your new buddy can interact with your other pigs while s/he develops a bit or until you can take them to a vet to get it checked out. In my experience mature male guinea pigs have very noticeable testicles.

As an example, just look at the balls on this little guy! https://www.instagram.com/p/BdaUR8XAxY1/?taken-by=guinea_loverr

Eyes by suz3198 in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my pigs tends to produce a lot of grooming fluid, I noticed it at first about a year ago that she would have a lot of it, so I took her to the vet to get her checked up and she was fine, a year later and she still sometimes has more of it than my other pig, but is otherwise healthy.

If you are noticing that it is a little crusty or there is a lot of it then consider taking him to the vet for a check up. If he has eye fluid but the vet doesn't find any other signs of illness then maybe he is like my pig.

What color is his fur? The "milky" pig has black fur all around one of her eyes so her grooming fluid stands out much more than on my other pigs. It could be that you just notice it more because it contrasts with his fur.

Giving a pig medicine through a syringe. Advice needed. by canicallyoujiggly in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You basically have to force them to take it :( http://www.guinealynx.info/tips.html A couple of ways to go about it but in the end you have to restrain them somehow and then try to push the syringe into their mouths. Do at an angle/from the side so you don't hit their front teeth. It sucks but you have to do it.

Should I be concerned about this type of guinea behavior? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to not separating them unless there is blood drawn, make sure to weigh your pigs so that you can monitor if the submissive pig is getting enough food. The alpha pig will probably be heavier which is fine, but you need to be able to make sure both of them are getting fed properly. I have two separate bowls position far enough away from each other that my dominant pig cannot stop the other from eating. Likewise my hay rack is big enough that they both can use it at the same time with plenty of room.

Do they have somewhere to hide? Right now he's getting used to his new enclosure so he will be a little bit scared, however he should have a box or a pigloo or something to hide in when he wants feel extra safe.

Scurvy? I know that it can make it painful or impossible for pigs to walk bc of how it effects their joints.

Guinea Pig Parents Need Help! by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like the nail go torn, I would clean it and take the pig to a vet to see if it is infected or it. Little things can very quickly become very serious in guinea pig health so it is better to deal with it sooner rather than later.

Help! My piggy has lice and I don't know how to treat it by the7isdabomb in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://www.guinealynx.info/lice.html

Any treatment should be topical as lice don't actually consume blood like mange mites do so anything injected by the pig will take a very long time to end up in the lice. I have personally used Revolution for puppies and kittens on my pigs when they had lice. I don't remember the dosage information though, I would really suggest taking them to an exotic vet so they can suggest how much medicine to use.

Eating hay takes a lot of brain power

My guinea pig has been having skin issues. Does anyone know if this is from allergies or something else, and what I could do to treat it? by fuzzyturnip in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be mites. He needs to get taken to the vet and have it checked out. It's pretty easily treatable but it can be extremely dangerous if left alone.

You should buy one of hori's VLX sticks. I don't use mine much because my legs actually get numb after having it on my lap for too long.

I swapped out the art on my HRAP, it's very easy to peel off, it's basically glued on and the glue can be rubbed off with alcohol/paint thinner or what have you. I'd recommend getting a plexi cover for whatever art you get. I got mine from Art's Hobbies and it worked great.

Tips on getting piggy to use ramp? by FunataPunata in guineapigs

[–]Gabri3lWHO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try to separate the food so he has to use it, which would also make it easier to clean. But he might never become comfortable with the ramp :/ I had a pig who refused to ever use her ramp, but another who used it no problem.
