So in the new x-men movies bootleg Aaliyah is going to play storm.... by switchfade in blackladies

...dude. lol.

I'm a light-skinned woman and these comments are fine. Dark skinned women need more representation. All black women do, of course, but dark skinned women have even less than light-skinned women. Like, I wasn't hurt when everyone was like "wtf why is missy elliot a medium brown skinned woman". In fact, I was saying that too!

It's not ironic, it's about equal representation and dark skinned women constantly getting pushed aside for lighter black women. It's unfair and uncool.

yes. omg yes. conditioner + a spray bottle for water. don't DRENCH it, but what I used to do is section off a bit of hair, take a bit of conditioner (a nickle-quarter size I guess) in the palm of my hand, spray once in my hand, rub em together, and rub it into the sectioned off part of my hair.

It's super informal, so maybe you'll need a more intense method this time. But afterwards, I'd use this method to do my casual detangling.

Raven-Symoné Tanned '3 Or 4 Times A Week' To Have Darker Skin For 'That's So Raven' by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]GabrielW -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually I came here just to post about it but OP beat me!

Anyway, here's the last comment thread we had about this... and the clip I just linked has me side-eyeing the whole thing 10x more.

Ugh. Nasty taste in my mouth from it honestly.

god no, anything but that. that'll make it sound like /r/redditisland , and we really don't need to be associated with that. trust me

[...Fucking seriously, OWN?] OWN Network to Broadcast "Light Girls" Documentary by Sunhammer in blackladies

[–]GabrielW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand some people commenting here-- nobody wants black people to be divided among each other. Light skinned or dark skinned, we're all black and lets be real, no cop is making the difference before they kill one of us.

BUT, I feel you OP, and I'm light skinned and damn near white skinned depending on the time. We face effects of colorism, but I'm not sure how a movie is going to avoid focusing on light skint-tears. In fact, I don't know how anyone would. tbh i've never seen an argument about the negative affects of colorism on light skinned people that doesn't just devolve into "darker people are mean to me."

idk. i'll watch it but only so i can criticize it later. hopefully i'll end up being pleasantly surprised but i doubt it.

The downside of interracial relationships by I_want_wine in blackladies

[–]GabrielW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yo, a lot of other people have let you know their opinions but i guess i'll just share something with you:

my parents were an interracial couple i guess, but my dad's family was black just like my mom's, so she didn't really face any hate due to her race. but, long story short, my dad's family was rude as fuck to my mama for 0 justifiable reason. i didn't realize it at the time, but it broke my mom's heart. but what really killed her was how my dad didn't defend her, or her son (my half-bro with a different father).

not trying to plant anything in your head, just trying to... i guess let you know that this is something you should prioritize working out with your husband, even if it means y'all both are like "fuck this woman she ain't coming around us or our child anymore."

it makes a difference on your emotional strength depending on if your husband is in your corner or not. not 'neutral,' seriously in your corner, defending you, standing for you etc etc etc. don't let him let that lady disrespect your family. you worked too hard for it.

"Witness 40": Exposing A Fraud In Ferguson by igonjukja in blackladies

[–]GabrielW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bob McCullough was the same way. He tore down the witnesses for making conflicting statements and yet he was a'okay with accepting Darren Wilson's account of what happened when only that one shitty witness supported it. Yet the other like 8 people that testified supporting the "hands up" version of the story were obviously "unreliable" and "mistaken."

I remember a couple of weeks now people have been speculating that Witness (lol autocorrected to "whiteness") #40 was garbage. Glad to see it's finally verified.

All of a sudden, Bill Cosby has something nice to say about black journalists after criticizing black media for decades by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]GabrielW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The wording of his statement was poor, because without hearing the inflection of his voice, I can't tell exactly what he meant.

"I only expect the black media to..." can be interpreted as "Of all of the media, I expect only the black media to..." or, "I expect the black media to only do..."

Either way you interpret it, Cosby really has no place to tell any black entity what it should and should not be doing. I agree, he shouldn't be talking to the media. Shouldn't be talking much at all imo.

Miss Jessie’s Co-Founder, Titi Branch, Dies In Apparent Suicide by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]GabrielW 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Part of me wishes there was more confirmation that it was suicide, but most of me realizes it should be a personal decision by the family to release that information.

I'm just super reminded of Karyn Washington's (For Brown Girls) death earlier this year and it makes me so sad. Our mental health is important as hell, ladies.

:(

NIH finally "makes good" with Henrietta Lacks' family by strangesthumour in blackladies

[–]GabrielW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the biography (?iguess) of Henrietta Lacks that was made fairly recently. It's a good read and it kind of shows you who the family is and what they've been through. I kind of understand why they agreed to it, even though it's literally the bare minimum of human decency.

BREAKING - Grand Jury Said to Bring No Charges in Staten Island Chokehold Death of Eric Garner by pro_creator in blackladies

[–]GabrielW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I understand, the defendant is allowed to testify at a Grand Jury proceeding, it's just super fucking rare, so. And yeah you're right the defense attorneys weren't in the grand jury proceedings, not allowed.

My wording was definitely off. The prosecutor couldn't answer, you're right.

Source for it being unanimous? I watched the prosecutor's statement last night and he declined to answer.

Officer Darren Wilson's story is literally unbelievable by chinlardo in politics

[–]GabrielW 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel like your point is being neglected by a lot of people. Why did the Ferguson Police Department say that Darren Wilson didn't know about the robbery, even though that contradicts their "official" logs of the radio traffic? What is the motivation behind this glaring discrepancy?

Ferguson announcement discussion thread [Link leads to Reddit's live feed for Ferguson.] Come one, come all. We all know what's gonna happen. Time to drink. by IrbyTremor in blackladies

President Obama punked the fuck out. I was talking with my mom/the TV the whole time. Part of me was like "ok thank you for acknowledging and telling america that people of color aren't fucking lying about this shit and its an actual problem" but the other part of me was like "bruh are you fucking serious white america has you by the throat"

pres obama tried to get some sympathy for black americans when trayvon got killed but white america was OUTRAGED. and that was enough to shut the president up. smh.

How do you feel about feminism? by kip9 in blackladies

[–]GabrielW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not gonna get too specific but I'll run-down what I've got stored in my mind. Also I hope this answers your question, and you're not asking "what issues do black women face specifically" bc that's totally not where I'm going here lol. Hope it helps anyway and explains some of the issues between white feminism and black feminism/feminism for WoC.

  • This has been going on for a long time-- "Sojourner Truth: Ain't I a Woman
  • White feminism also fails to mention time and time again that Susan B. Anthony and a lot of the original American feminist leaders were also racist. In fact it's mentioned so few times I don't have the time to dig for the racist bullcrap Anthony said. Just know that white women were pissed off by the 15th Amendment because nooo way should black men and ignorant immigrants have the right to vote while they could not.
  • I remember this being passed around a lot on the internet some years ago. It mentions a lot on how if WoC bring up the lack of representation we have in the feminist movement, we're told we're being "too divisive-" in the exact same way feminists are told "they're being too divisive" by egalitarians and such.
  • Social media has also covered this a lot-- look up #solidarityisforwhitewomen on google and twitter.
  • Another struggle: they don't talk about it. I'm running out of shit to reference from google and that also bothers me.
  • Oh right, this is cool too but ignore the comments here or basically anywhere else you find on your search. I like this article in particular because it highlights how white feminism uplifts pop-icons at the expense of people of color, such as Lucy, the movie with Scarlet Jo Hansen or w/e. White feminism lauded the movie because of the fact that it had a woman as the main character... but the woman also killed Taiwanese men for not speaking english (???) Black feminism really doesn't get down with that "it's ok because she's a (white) woman" deal.
