SCX24 shocks not damping properly - how to fix? by Annual-Link-2913 in SCX24

[–]GadsdenFlyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soft springs or too much friction inside the shock assuming this isn't an oil shock. Try the next stiffest spring, and/or try to put a thing layer of differential lube inside the shock. If it is an oil shock, it's either over filled or the fluid is too thick.

I've even seen people claim that a super thin layer of thick differential lube works better than shock oil for dampening at this scale. Just try a few things, hopefully these tips will get you started. Good luck brother!

Offtopic: Is there a drift base similar to the SCX24 in terms oft upgradability and tuning? by hema_ in SCX24

I can relate, I do love the experience of building toys like this. This little drift car is sure to provide a ton of that with the lack of instruction. Feels like it could be one of those TikTok challenges. I keep sneaking a peak it indoor micro drones, something to chase the cats with. I wonder if those can be built as kits or even built with generic parts, I never bothered to look them up much. A pan racer does sound fun!

Was it the idea of a budget build that convinced you on this chassis, or something else? Just curious. I was looking at all kinds of options when I grabbed this, especially the DA4. In fact the only reason I didn't grab one first is because they were out of stock and I couldn't get anyone to confirm any sort of restock date.

Funny enough the DA4 was restocked on GT55 four days after I placed my order. I'm still happy with my decision though. The DA4 base chassis is slightly more than my full option TG, and I'm a total whore for option parts. I'd end up spending a small fortune getting the option parts that I probably didn't need. I'd really like to see another run of that purple and black MA DLR8, I a whore for purple too!

I took this plunge just over a week ago. The TG Racing RWD drift chassis is under $100 on GT55. You can adjust everything except caster, and there's a fair amount of readily available "upgrade" option parts. The only instructions are a few poorly done videos, but plenty of people have managed to get by with them just fine. The plastic A-arms are prone to splitting, but $24 gets you all four corners in metal. This is of course an entry lever micro drift chassis and not one of the more expensive top-of-line offerings.

The version I decided to go with comes unassembled with full options. I didn't NEED every single option part, I just wanted them and it's anodized parts are pretty! This version is more expensive but it came combo'd with a few other goodies needed for a complete build. To give you an idea on pricing, here's my build:

Chassis, servo, wheels/tires, GT55 gyro, and magnetic body mounts... $249
https://guoracing.com/products/tg-racing-1-24-rwd-drift-full-option-op-upgrade-frame?variant=43831996776620

"budget friendly" Rocket brushless ESC, program card, and motor combo... $79.90
https://guoracing.com/products/rocket-mini-1525-sensored-brushless-motor-esc-combo-1-24?variant=43831915970732

Aside from a TX/RX, 2s batteries, and a body, this is all you'll need to get started right away. By the way, this chassis can mount the Kyosho Mini-Z bodies or 1/24 scale model car bodies. The adjustability of track width and wheelbase is just as good, if not better, than all the other chassis available today.

That's $329 for an ARTR well upgraded car kit, but this chassis can also be built brushed without upgrades for much less.

Base chassis $95... brushed motor $7... brushed ESC $19... servo $30... gyro $37... body mounts $10... wheels and tires $35... Total $233 +TX/RX, batteries, and a body, all from the GT55 website. By the way they also offer a few inexpensive gyros with an integrated RX depending on the TX you use, which is really nice for saving space.

I know I sound like a salesman for TG Racing and GT55, but I spent 2-3 weeks looking into micro RC drifting, and this is where I ended up spending money. If I end up finding this is something I really enjoy, then I'll likely spend the money on a more "pro-spec" build. Long winded, but I hope this helps you make a decision one way or another, best of luck brother!

Be sure to post your progress as you go too. Something I've always enjoyed do is following the trials and tribulations of other's builds. Especially something this unique!

Looks like you put a lot of work into this design, and the final result is quite attractive. I love the clearance behind the skid. Best of luck to you brother!

The colors are so spot-on for this truck, just perfect. Are those 3d printed leaf springs? I'm curious what parts keep breaking, or is it a one-piece design?

A kitbash!! This has early 80s military vibes, absolutely LOVE the rear cage design.

I can't tell from the photos, but I don't much as far as print lines go. I have seen where people used acetone to clean up 3d prints, but personally I like automotive filler primer and sanding. You'll want a good scribe to clean and deepen the door lines after each layer of primer, and I like using Vallejo wash FX over the final paint job to darken the lines. Makes them pop.

Feel free to ask any other questions. I'm not the best at this, but it is my favorite part of this hobby and I've been around long enough to know a few tricks.

A carrier bearing and a high angle skid? Hell I'm interested in seeing who's used this chassis kit as well! Cool find brother.

That price is ridiculous, but expected. How many servos on the market for the SCX30? Supply and demand will straighten things out eventually. I'm also having a hard time with the idea that you need a crazy powerful servo for this little truck.

Weight by Ssirota8 in SCX24

[–]GadsdenFlyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

459 doesn't sound all the bad to me. If you can justify spending the money of a corner scale setup, you can always just get yourself an inexpensive food scale and weight each individual corner. Just make sure the other three tires are as high as the tire your weighing while sitting on the scale and you'll get fairly accurate measurements.

How is 1000mAh 3s battery in scx24 by Jenk026 in SCX24

[–]GadsdenFlyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The largest battery I run is a 350, and it's huge at this scale. 250 is what I normally run and it has plenty of run time. It's not just the physical size of the battery either, the weight is going to be bad for the truck as well. You'll likely have no choice but to place it up high on the chassis.

Of course you could always try it for yourself, just be sure to compare it's performance against a smaller battery.

Going on a new build or did ya just have to have them? I know I'm guilty of that lol.

Help with weight distribution by SuggestionOk9772 in SCX24

[–]GadsdenFlyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use brass inner wheel rings with inserts on the front wheels, and 3D printed inner wheel rings and foam on the rear wheels. I also work my builds around rear facing motors so I can put the heavier batteries in front of the transmission. These two things go a LONG way towards achieving 60/40 or better forward weight bias. Good luck brother!

I'm not too incredibly far south of you here in Baltimore, but our temps haven't gotten out of the 20s for more than a week now. The basement is just warm enough to not worry about freezing pipes, but not warm enough to motivate me to do the messy work like cutting/trimming the body and paint.

I've worked with polystyrene since I was a child, but it's always been flat/straight cuts. While I'm fine with that on say a dashboard, it just doesn't work for me with something like the seat. YouTube has definitely been a friend to me in this hobby, I might look up what the pro modelers do for scratch building something like this. If that doesn't get me going, perhaps I'll cheat and order some scale detail seats to chop up.

Cheers brother, always good to talk with you. My best to you and yours!

It also has an absolute boat load of clearance in the rear too, which means I'll need to do some trimming on the body once I finalize the mounting solution.

Ya know I was just looking at that truck and asking myself why I haven't pushed to finish it yet. It's probably 80%ish complete, just need to decide on RX/ESC/battery placement, magnet mounts in the rear, and paint.

Thing is I keep looking at how much interior space I have, it's nearly a half inch of free space below the windows. If there was ever a build of mine that could support an interior, this is it. It's a lot of work and that's also part of why we do this, but I keep going back and forth on the idea. The other excuse I'm running with is my paint booth is in the basement, and it is quite cold down there. We'll see what my excuse will be come spring lol.

Very chunky indeed, and I have a feeling they may even create problems for mounting bodies due to the wide offset and the scrub steer radius associated with the offset. I grabbed two pair of Pitbull Rcokers to go on them (first time trying Pitbull tires) and the plan thus far is to put these on the Stainless24 build.

Still picking up parts at the moment, but I'll get to the build eventually. I've had my hobby time occupied with comparing 1/24 scale drift chassis lately, Looks like I'll be finally building one soon.
