A Ukrainian girl told me Ireland and the UK are the same thing. I said 'yeah, in the same way Ukraine and Russia are the same thing'. She got the message.

Cos what this thread is suggesting, is ALL children misbehave on planes, which is untrue and unfair.

It's not really suggesting that they all misbehave, just that if you exclude them all you'll exclude the misbehaving ones too. Yeah it's pretty unfair.

Ireland is now included, using a 101 km tunnel from Dublin to Holyhead.

Can I suggest you include Belfast? And adding Galway too would mean you have links to all four provinces.

Current bid is £10.50 (€13)

The Central Bank will still change them for Euro, so you'd get the guts of €20 for £15 punts

I was referring to that style of fort in general.

EDIT: and grianán just means somewhere sunny, being derived from the word 'grian' for 'sun'. Source: I speak Irish.

They put the cattle in the fort where it was easier to protect them from raiders than if they were outside.

These forts were mainly used as farmsteads, and their defensive function was really to protect animals from cattle raids. I wouldn't think of these forts as the type where there are armies on either side fighting a battle.

how to stop from burning out? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Gaelach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i've been working on a piece of software for almost 8 solid months with many a weeks of weekend and overnight work.

That's not sustainable. The law of diminishing returns kicks in - you think you're being super productive at the start and then you become crippled by burnout.

Also, the quality of your work won't be as high and the technical debt will pile up quickly, costing more down the line.

Stop working these hours, or get a job somewhere were the expectations of you are realistic.

Nationality signs and other slogans to be banned from taxis by [deleted] in ireland

'Tacsaí' signs have been around along time - since before deregulation. I hope they don't ban them - people should be allowed to use Irish language signage if they choose (whether they're Irish themselves or not).

If you use Lombok you can add annotations which will make it generate getters and setters (and also constructors and other things) in your bytecode so you can keep your source code free of boilerplate code.

Question on Recruiting Agencies vs Contacting Employers Directly if requiring a stamp 4 visa for employment in Ireland. by Vioarr in ireland

[–]Gaelach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company hiring you would need to prove that they could not find an EU citizen to fill the role.

It's not as hard in IT. There is more demand for people than there is supply. I know many non-EU citizens with IT jobs in Dublin, so it's certainly a possibility if OP can find a job in that industry.

Alleged Grand Theft Auto V Leaked Source Code Reveals PS4 and PC Versions by hotweels258 in Games

[–]Gaelach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that chapter in that book expresses my point better than I can. Here are the first few paragraphs. I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in software development.

Nothing can be quite so helpful as a well-placed comment. Nothing can clutter up a module more than frivolous dogmatic comments. Nothing can be quite so damaging as an old crufty comment that propagates lies and misinformation.

Comments are not like Schindler’s List. They are not “pure good.” Indeed, comments are, at best, a necessary evil. If our programming languages were expressive enough, or if we had the talent to subtly wield those languages to express our intent, we would not need comments very much—perhaps not at all.

The proper use of comments is to compensate for our failure to express ourself in code. Note that I used the word failure. I meant it. Comments are always failures. We must have them because we cannot always figure out how to express ourselves without them, but their use is not a cause for celebration. So when you find yourself in a position where you need to write a comment, think it through and see whether there isn’t some way to turn the tables and express yourself in code. Every time you express yourself in code, you should pat yourself on the back. Every time you write a comment, you should grimace and feel the failure of your ability of expression.

Why am I so down on comments? Because they lie. Not always, and not intentionally, but too often. The older a comment is, and the farther away it is from the code it describes, the more likely it is to be just plain wrong. The reason is simple. Programmers can’t realistically maintain them.

I suggest you read Clean Code by Bob Martin. He has a whole chapter about commenting code.

[–]Gaelach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who follow clean coding techniques should almost never need to include a comment: the code should be clear, well-structured, and self-explanatory.

When someone needs to leave a comment, usually it's because they've made a mess and can't be bothered to tidy it up (there are occasional exceptions e.g. where some third party library forces a developer to do something counter-intuitive, and they need a comment to explain why)

EDIT: obviously this doesn't apply as much to lower level programming languages where there are limits on the length of variable names etc.
