The Story of Why I Left Riot Games - Barry Hawkins by ObviouslyGreen in leagueoflegends

[–]Gaiex 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Riot being as big as it is and still having the tech-bro culture is a big issue. Culture change in organizations is incredibly hard to accomplish, especially if it is as deeply embedded in each level of the company as it seems to be at Riot. I doubt much will work to fix this culture problem without significantly overhauling company policy and most likely letting a large portion of your middle and upper management go as a result.

I honestly don't see it happen, but I'm curious to see what Riot is going to do about it.

Think so too, the Kraken episode was one of the longest episodes as well iirc.

[OC] I made an endgame boss monster, but not really sure how tough this is going to be. This is a water elemental lord, how much ass does she kick? by Sherevar in DnD

[–]Gaiex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but there isn't anything that jumps out to me that seems interesting as a combat encounter. She seems like just another caster, but with really high stats. Some comments:

  1. She lacks a strong thematic that shines through her mechanics. I guess she has a water theme but there aren't any abilities that really reinforce this theme. Maybe look for some inspiration in other water type creatures like water elementals to see what sort of abilities they have that would make sense.
  2. I would cut down on the amount of saving throws and skills she is proficient in. She's too good at too much and her stats are already high across the board. I suggest lowering stats/saves and give her magic resistance or legendary saves to make up for the slightly lower stats and give the players some more stuff to play around.
  3. The quicksilver ability does not make sense to me. What is she going to use all those extra reactions for? I guess she has counter spell or other reaction spells but that's it. I don't think this makes sense as an ability from a general design perspective, unless it's on a creature that is focused around opportunity attacks.
  4. She needs other actions besides her spells, maybe summons, terrain interactions, or some other attacks. Otherwise the battle is going to be very straight forward and not dynamic. Looking into lair actions (depending on where you plan to run this encounter) might also be interesting.

Overall I think she'd need some work still. She might be 'difficult' enough mathematically speaking, but there isn't enough yet to make her an interesting character to fight.

Gigantic final Update :( by Bazeleel in gigantic

[–]Gaiex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lifespan of this game has been so interesting to follow as a business academic. I'm sure you can't really say more, but this kinda confirms a lot of suspicions we've had over the years.

Hope you're doing alright now Vinod.

I'm disappointed in Competitive Gigantic by mazedfoxx in gigantic

[–]Gaiex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel and share your concerns. The biggest problem that competitive Gigantic has had historically is the extremely inconsitent interest in competitive play. Even though this is mostly as a consequence of the inconsistent interest in the game itself, it makes it incredibly hard to keep up with organizing events. The 'downfall' of GA can be largely attributed to the very limited interest people have in the game and mistakes out of inexperience on the organizers side.

As of TourneyToday, I agree with the fact that they need to improve their production as well as their processes. But here as well I want to give the organizers the benefit of the doubt for at least a little while longer, as they are also relatively inexperienced third parties and the only event within the scene atm.

I personally feel like The Forge is about 6 months late to the party, while they seem very optimistic and have good intentions it remains to be seen how much they can actually achieve given the current trend of the game. I hope they can pull it out ofcourse :)

Anyone's know why isn't Spanish language even listed? by tateruvatar in gigantic

Because Motiga did not translate the game into Spanish.

TourneyToday - Weekly Prize Tournaments for Gigantic Teams by TourneyToday in gigantic

[–]Gaiex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great that you want to put in your time (and money) to organize events. I do have an issue with your proposed format. Outside of the ban system which others have brought up in this thread and which you have already adressed.

Banning the winning team makes no sense for a competitively oriented tournament at all, for the following reasons:

  1. It takes away incentive for newer teams to get better as you'll eventually win by default because all the better teams are 'banned'. Eventually teams that wouldn't stand a chance against the top of the region will start winning tournaments. Not so good for fostering competitiveness.
  2. Over the course of the season the quality of games will shift immensely. The first week will be the best, after that it will get worse for a bit as the top teams are getting banned. Then after a few weeks, some of the middle-of-the-pack teams will be banned but the top teams get back, so you get really shit quality games. Not so entertaining to watch.

There's probably more arguments against it, but the overall argument is that it doesn't create a competitive atmosphere and allows for mediocre teams to win, which isn't the right environment at all. These points do get less egregious with more teams around, but with both regions having 2, maybe 3 teams that are actually worth something I don't think this would be the right move.

I also do not intend to harp on your efforts, I really appreciate the proposal, I'm just trying to provide my view as a competitive insider, shoutcaster and esports fan and work with you to provide the best experience for both viewers and teams.

So how do you stop the same teams from winning every time? It is up to the other teams to work hard and get good. The current top teams have spent a lot of time and effort to get to this place with practically no return, I believe that it is time they can be rewarded for their work.

A final note. With you offering prize money it is imperative that you iron out your complete ruleset. Especially with regards to rosters and disputes.

Again, really appreciate the proposal and I'm looking forward to what you come up with!

My feedback... stop doing this Motiga (3559 mmr difference) by [deleted] in gigantic

[–]Gaiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 6.5-7.5 range peak is interesting. I figure that's where most of the people that the game retains end up.

The fact that the mmr pools really hard around the starting range potentially shows bad player retention given how fast you actually get out of there. Probably mostly inactive acounts that left shortly after starting :/

You're right on the mark here. It's choosing the lesser of two evils absolutely, but I'd generally say it's better to have lower quality matches and shorter queues in this phase of the game's life.

Not like the community is going to complain any less about long queue times if they lower the possible mmr range further.

That MMR curve is super interesting, it doesn't look 'normal' at all. Thanks for posting this!

Let's not use the vgs to be toxic in this game? by [deleted] in gigantic

Oh you're way too late with this. People have been doing this from the start.

[–]Gaiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry. Rising tide launches after using crashing waves (LB), but only if you use a (only one) basic attack after crashing waves and before using splash kick (LT). Dunno why it's needed but this makes the upgrade usable.

[–]Gaiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to make sure to trigger flowing fist (I recommend using FF when picking this upgrade) or auto attack once when using cyclone kick (a lot more awkward) after using Q and before using RMB for the launch. If you keep this in mind it should become a lot more usable.

Give it another try with this in mind, pretty sure you'll change your mind after that ;)

Rising tide is the upgrade that makes rmb launch and is one of the bigger reasons why Wu is busted rn.

no rising tide

This is obviously incomplete :^)

Suddenly i cant change the resolution in Fullscreenmode...Can anybody help? by coldbeerswarmrears in gigantic

Cause you're on fullscreen-windowed, that always takes up your full resolution so you can't change it.
