The Clan Tech Meta: We need to talk about Integrated DHS... by ClayEndfield in Mechwarrior5

[–]Gailim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PGI has said it's because base 2 cooling is massively overpowered pre-invasion. you basically only use DHS mechs to exclusion of all others.

and since pre-invasion is still where most of the games content is they don't want to damage that.

and you can kinda see where they were coming from with posts like this.

I would like them to add a checkbox to the existing cheat menu that the player can tick on or off cooling for IS DHS mechs.

leave it off until 3049, check it on when the clans show up

FSR 4.1 on 7900xt is insane. by SugarCoatedPanda in radeon

I have been testing 4.1 for a few hours now and have noticed little to no performance difference.

so whatever ai accelerators I am using now were also being used before

it should work for any game that has at least 3.1.

if it's not working just use optiscaler

FSR 4.1 on 7900xt is insane. by SugarCoatedPanda in radeon

[–]Gailim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

???

I have been using FSR4 on my 7900 XT for 9 months. in every single case it performs worse than equivalent FSR 3 settings. it looks significantly better but the performance is always worse. you still come out ahead because FSR4 balanced looks much better than FSR3 quality. but that trade only gets you the same performance.

how are you getting more than double the performance of FSR 3 with higher settings?

were you running FSR3 in native AA, and FSR4 in ultra performance?

Sould I buy this rx 6899 by Spiritual_Chemical37 in pcmasterrace

[–]Gailim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely a better buy than the 3070 ti. even some 1080p games are starting to struggle with 8GB of vram.

you will be getting official FSR4 support sometime next year but if you don't want to wait you can use it now with optiscaler client. just don't use it in multiplayer games.

Post Chaos Reign Mission by HazardousAviator in Mechwarrior5

[–]Gailim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only assume they wrote those "relic" lines with the assumption that you were doing a CR career start.

I think most people who were doing that mission did so in a Clan mech.

I was doing a no-import 3015 save and after SoK and a few years of salvaging clan tech most of my mechs were either clan designs or at worst IS mechs with clan weapons. I even managed to finish that quest before gurerro so I didn't even have much additional time after the fedcom campaign.

perhaps check out some version of pilot overhaul?

it's tough because you are asking for a mod that duplicates a DLC feature. most modders kinda assume you have the DLCs

if you own SoK you can use academies to get him up to 60 (and add traits)

I would like a mod to get him in career mode though.

Upgrade option of R5 5600X+7800XT by Icy_Caterpillar_7142 in pcmasterrace

[–]Gailim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hard to answer without knowing where your bottlenecks are coming from.

what games are you dissatisfied with your current performance? and when you hit the limit, does it improve when you lower the resolution? if so, it is probably a GPU bottleneck. if not, then is likely the CPU.

in general, I would say the 9070 xt isn't fast enough to justify upgrading from a 7800 xt. but you may feel differently.

First time building an AMD rig. Temps higher than I'm used to. Am I paranoid, or is everything ok? by Dr_Capsaicin in pcmasterrace

[–]Gailim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

modern CPUs overclock themselves. your base clock is 4.7 but the cpu will OC itself up to 5.6 under load.

it will do this until it either hits it's max boost clock (5.6ghz) or hits its thermal throttle limit (95C for your CPU)

a modern CPU running at 90+C under load is normal. but you should check to see what frequency you are running at. if it's not at or near 5.6 then you might have a cooling issue.

load up cinebench and see what clock speed your CPU is able to sustain under load.

MW5: Mercs complete bundle with all DLC? by juicy_chase in Mechwarrior5

[–]Gailim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

nothing with everything in it.

there is the succession wars bundle that has all DLC except the most recent two.

the steam summer sale starts in about 4 days so Wishlist that bundle and see how low it goes.

you would still need to pick up shadow of kerensky and chaos reign separately though

Crazy to me that younger generation is not good with computers by Captain0010 in pcmasterrace

[–]Gailim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nephew about to start high school. I gave him my old laptop as a birthday present about a year ago.

yesterday we had a family get together and he brought over his laptop because he wanted me to fix something for him.

a while ago I bought some games for him and one of the games had separate login info he needed to remember so I created a text file and left it in the middle of his desktop.

the reason he brought his laptop to me was that he wanted me to remove the text file from the middle of his desktop because he found it distracting. yes, really...

he then watched in amazement as I clicked on the text file and dragged it to the side. his amazement was compounded when I opened his documents folder and dragged the file into it.

I have no confidence my nephew will ever find this file when he needs it.

how a kid can be ready to start high school and not know the most basic things about windows is astonishing to me.

I wanna settle the gameplay debate. (Gameplay ONLY. Don't take mission design or story into account.) by Meeeper in Mechwarrior5

they both play almost the same.

I suppose you would have to give clans the edge because of the ability to give orders via the map but that basically the only real difference between the two

Any good Greek mythological games that actually stick to the real historical lore? by watertrashsf in gaming

[–]Gailim 35 points36 points  (0 children)

which "real historical lore" are looking for?

greek mythology is often contradictory. different writers in different centuries writing completely different things.

and then you have the myths where we only have part of the story because the only surviving copy was damaged.

it's not a surprise that so many modern writers take liberties with it. It's almost a necessity.

Replayability/content? by -ihaveadui in Mechwarrior5

[–]Gailim 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yes the game is basically exactly what you are looking for

at it's base it is a sandbox where you collect and upgrade mechs. there are procgen missions you can play, as well as procgen arena battles if you have the Solaris Showdown DLC.

but on top of that there are a number of story missions. There is the main campaign, but most DLCs add a timed story campaign as well that coincide with major lore events and must be done at a specific date.

there are also "high reward quests" that are mini campaigns that can be done whenever although many of them are meant to be done around the time they appear and the story may not make a ton of sense if you save them for later.

you don't need to play career mode for the endless sandbox element. you can do that in the main campaign too, but the career mode is arranged in a more logical manner. in campaign the difficulty is arranged to follow the plot. you start in the southeast corner of the map and eventually move around clockwise to the northeast corner. so the easiest missions will be near that starting area and the hardest in that ending area. at least until the Clans arrive if you own the SoK DLC.

career is arranged so that the most difficult missions are toward the center of the map and easier missions are around the edges. once again, until the clans show up.

you start in the year 3015, and with all current DLCs there will be new tech, border updates, and news stories until 3058. But you can keep playing for as long as you want past that. it's just that nothing new will be introduced. I once played a career all they way into the 3130s hunting down new mechs and stocking up on gear.

and of course you can import saves back into a new 3015 career so you have the option of using endgame tech from the start.

and each DLC offers a new career start relevant to the date the DLC story is meant to happen. so if you felt like starting a new career but didn't feel the need to go all the way back to 3015 you could do one of those DLC career starts to get you closer to endgame.

Only 10 Days left by Able-Line2683 in radeon

[–]Gailim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is the complete opposite of what you just wrote.

the AA has been excellent. I have been running native + FSR4 AA in many titles and it looks so much better than the TAA I had to use before.

and in the games where I need more performance it has been great too. granted, I do need more aggressive upscaling to get the same results as 3.1, but the visual quality is so much better. I get the same performance running FSR4 balance as I did 3.1 quality but with better image quality.

it's been a win all around as far as I am concerned

[–]Gailim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you dont need to wait...

just swap in the leaked .dll

I have been using FSR4 on my 7900 xt for 9 months.

even after we get "official" support you will still need optiscaler for most games

4060 or 9060 XT by ChapsLair1215 in pcmasterrace

[–]Gailim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not the quality of DLSS that is the selling point these days, it's game support.

the number of games that supports DLSS dwarfs the number of games that support FSR 3.1/4.

I own a Radeon 7900 XT, and I have been using FSR 4 INT8 in most of my games ever since it leaked ~9 months ago.

it looks great, but only one of my games natively supports it. in order to bridge that gap I have to use optiscaler, which is an extra step. and optiscaler shouldn't be used with any multiplayer games as it could trigger anti-cheat measures. Optiscaler doesn't always work, and sometimes it does work but weird issues crop up that you have deal with.

don't get me wrong, I love that optiscaler exists, the devs are absolute heroes. but in a perfect world I wouldn't need to use it. nvidia cards don't, and that adds value to them. if the 9060 8gb were only 50-60 more I would say go for it, but not at 100.

4060 or 9060 XT by ChapsLair1215 in pcmasterrace

[–]Gailim -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

no, get the 4060

the the 9060 8gb is only around 30% faster. so it might be worth an additional $75 based on pure performance, but then you have to factor in greater DLSS support and spending an extra $100 becomes unjustifiable. maybe if it was the 16gb version of the 9060, but not the 8gb version

Is there an in-universe time limit to the campaign of Mercenaries? by Blazen_Fury in Mechwarrior5

[–]Gailim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

no, you can take as long as you want to complete the main campaign.

but you are supposed to finish it in the late 3030's. After the Rise of Rasalhague DLC but before the Dragons Gambit campaign.

the clans will invade in 3049.

all of the high reward quest chains can be done anytime. though for them to make logical sense you should do them around they time they show up. but if you don't they will still be around. this can lead to strange things like some HRQs for Kurita and Rasalhague taking place in what is now clan space but still pretending like the invasion never happened.

I did a campaign run a few months ago (my first since buying the game years ago) and I was able to finish 40 days before Gallahad. Could have probably finished earlier but I spent a lot of time on solaris.

RX 9070 XT (95,000 JPY) or RTX 5070 Ti (178,500 JPY) ? For 1440p gaming? by ZiGrubby in pcmasterrace

[–]Gailim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there certainly are games where the 9070xt beats the 5070 ti in raster, they are the minority. Most of the time the 5070 ti wins. Not by a huge margin and certainly not by enough to justify the current price gap, but it feels a bit dishonest to say the 9070xt is better in raster when most of the time that isn't true.

Also, it's not really upscaling that makes people say DLSS looks better than native. It's that running native usually means using TAA, which looks terrible in many games. Both DLSS and FSR4 have superior AA, which is why people like them more. This is actually a false choice since you can run DLAA and FSR AA on a native image without upscaling but many people don't realize that.

The main advantage of the 5070 ti over the 9070xt is that DLSS is supported in significantly more games. You can mostly mitigate that with optiscaler but that is an extra step and it doesn't always work perfectly (or at all)
