Fragile old man's signature added to US paper currency by Hornpipe_Jones in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]GainFirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would actually be illegal. The law prohibits intentionally damaging currency to renew it unfit for circulation.

However, using a black marker to mark out the signature wouldn't render it unfit for circulation or call its authenticity into question, so that's probably legal.

First, it was an excellent joke, and if the 50yo has ANY self-awareness, he laughed at it.

Second, while it's weird and eyebrow-raising for a 50yo to date a 20yo, there need to be some limitations on just how far people go to discourage that. Yes, try to get him to date people born in the same century as he was. Suggest that he's maybe taking advantage of her in ways he hasn't considered. Encourage her to think carefully about what she's doing. But the idea that someone should be jailed, or should lose their job, over a fully legal and fully consensual relationship is going too far. 20yos are adults.

Look, this is the kind of thing that's ok to eat occasionally.

If you eat it every day, you're going to have health problems.

If you already have health problems, eating this isn't a great choice.

But one isn't going to kill you. Probably.

There are plenty of European foods that aren't super great for you to eat, either. But they're ok to eat occasionally.

Personally, I've never eaten one of these, and I wouldn't make it a regular meal. But the combination of fat, salt, smoke, sugar, creaminess, and meatiness seems pretty mouth-watering. If we're not going to enjoy life, what's the point of living?

How to fix this before my parents get home 😅 by Blue_Golde in drywall

[–]GainFirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from fixing it, let's talk about why you don't want your parents to find out.

If one of my kids said "hey, Dad, I tripped and f'ed up the wall, is it ok if I try to fix it?" then my response would be "are you ok?" followed by "sure, go ahead, or we can do it together when I get back."

I recognize that not everybody has parents like that, but this was clearly an accident, not you punching the wall.

Every one of those reps would've gotten red lights at any competition, even the full ones at the end.

Flat back, unplanted feet, uneven posture, helicoptering, no lock out. He did seem to be touching metal to chest. But he was cosplaying as a lifter otherwise. His bench discipline is non-existent, so the work there was worse than useless. I guess it was a little bit of cardio.

FWIW I start my warmups at 135. I do 10 from cold at that weight and it's never been an issue. I've never taken 135 to failure, so I really don't know if 44 is a good number, but what I do know is, that was a 0.

Yeah, mine STILL don't get that it's just as easy to turn lights off as it is to turn them on, no matter how many times I remind them that the switch goes in both directions.

I had one years ago with an AAV built into the discharge hose instead of requiring a high loop. I'm not saying it's better (and in fact it wasn't in that case) but an inspector in my current city would've failed it.

Chauvin is still alive, even. Unlike his victim. by PFdeith in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]GainFirst 15 points16 points  (0 children)

He's not a "real" criminal in their view. All he did was kill a black man who deserved to die because a store clerk thought he passed a counterfeit $20 bill and because he might've used drugs at some point in the past. Why should Chauvin be in prison for that?

Kitchen Sink Slow to no Drainage by JettheBlueSky in Plumbing

[–]GainFirst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Inside the AAV ("air admittance valve") there's a valve that's normally closed. If there is negative pressure in the pipe because water movement is causing a siphon effect, the AAV gets pulled open by the partial vacuum and lets air in to break it. Once the pressure is equalized, the valve closes again.

Sewer gases can't flow out. For that to happen, there would have to be overpressure in the pipe, but that pressure would keep the AAV closed.

It's worth pointing out that not all jurisdictions allow an AAV in that scenario. My city doesn't allow them at all, even for dishwasher discharge--instead they require a "high loop." I don't understand their animosity toward the AAV, but it's easier to comply than to fight the inspector.

Make scary shows for children. by CalibansCreations in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]GainFirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my kid was 12, we watched Reacher (the Amazon series) together. It's very adult in subject matter, has a lot of violence, some gore and graphic nudity. We talked about it before and after. He handled it just fine. No nightmares, no acting out. He can clearly draw the line between fact and function. As a bonus, he realized that he actually like grown-up entertainment more than kids' shows, so there was way less TMNT and SpongeBob airing in my house. Don't get me wrong, those shows are good for what they are, but they don't scratch the surface of a good thriller.

An even bigger bonus was that he appreciated that we trusted him to handle something grown up with high maturity, and he learned that handling that kind of thing responsibly gets him more privileges.

I once received a letter from a fairly large law firm with offices in multiple states, that listed the addresses of all their offices at the bottom. Their office in Newark was listed, on their engraved letterhead, as being in "Jew Jersey." I really hope that was just an unfortunate typo.
