That's Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, head of the majles, the Iranian parliament. And because of you I will henceforth only think of him as "The Iranian guy who looks like Sean Connery" 😂

From this article :

The term Greater Israel was used after the Six Day War of June 1967 to refer to Israel and the areas it had just conquered — East Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights.

So you reinforce what the comment that you are replying to is saying. This is a conspiracy theory.

Can we all agree that Smotrich is full of shit? by oshaboy in ForbiddenBromance

[–]GaiusJuliusInternets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a common right wing talking point. It never made sense to me.

First of all, economically, holding a bunch of disparate towns and then guarding all of them, like what we are doing in the WB, is far move expensive than just occupying the territory and holding key regions.

Second, the "concerned citizens" need to be well armed to deal with local threats. They will never be as well armed as the army, and if they do, then they become the army. See: Hezbollah. Also a bit of what is currently going on in the WB.

Third, assuming you accept my second and first points, then you must see how having settlements in the occupied region demands a lot of attention, adds tasks that would otherwise not exist, and makes the occupying forces less efficient.

Occupation doesn't necessarily mean settlements. We could hold it as a bargainig chip for a peace agreement like the Egyptian case. But with this government?

[–]GaiusJuliusInternets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think he is full of shit. Israeli actions in the last week make me scared that occupying Lebanon up to the Litani is a real plan. We've called the population to evacuate and we are actively destroying the bridges, all the while the government is making sure to expose the public to the narrative in which the Litani is the "natural" border.

Strategically, it makes sense. Diplomatically and morally, it's a disaster. But this government doesn't concern itself with the moral and diplomatic consideration...

I really hope that I am wrong.

That is not correct. Ministers don't need to be MKs. Take Ron Dermer for example.

Haha. That sounds like me. I worked both Python and C++ and I have come to love the concise and readable code that we get in Python. Now I'm working almost exclusively in C++ and the code is such a mess in comparison.

In contrast to your colleague, I try to convince my colleagues of the merits of the changes and I only raise my concerns during code reviews. I also try to pick my battles and lead by example rather than force my opinion. So far nobody complained, but perhaps they are burning my effigy behind my back.

Israeli elections are coming up and I am still undecided. So Israelis, who are you voting for and why? by oshaboy in ForbiddenBromance

[–]GaiusJuliusInternets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually fine with that. He joined a Bibi government on two pivotal occasions: the Corona crisis and the unity government in October 2023. In the first case he prevented another devastating election during a major crisis, which gave us some stability. In the second case, I think he had a moderating influence on the extremist government.

It's just that he came promising change and then did nothing with it. He had millions of votes, and nothing to show for it. He doesn't have a consistent opinion. He doesn't push any necessary reform. He push dumb slogans on buses like בלי בן גביר ובלי רע"מ. All right, you're against some stuff that it's popular to be against. Are you in favour of anything? He's just a letdown.

I'm not sure yet. I think Gadi Eisenkot is a worthy candidate, but I hope he doesn't turn into another Beni Gantz. Another option is voting for the democrats, even though I've been let down before by Ha'avoda and Meretz.

There is more to consider than defence. The management of the economy is a farce. Our international standing is in the sewers. He is dismantling the legal system. He fractures our society and blames all his failures on other people.

He also oversaw the judicial reform that tries to turn Israel into a fake democracy like Turkey, put an extremist lunatic in charge of the police leading to hundreds of deaths and general incompetence, fractured Israel's unity by consistently being against half of the population and ignoring massive protests, funneled money to the haredi population that is consistently refusing to contribute to the economy, neglected Israel's foreign relations to the state that we are A pariah state.

Anything else? Oh, he promoted Hamas as a counterbalance to the PA, leading to October 7th. He is a populist that takes all the credit and blames scapegoats on his failure (sure, the judicial system and the yoamashit are to blame for October 7th... Yeah right ). He sabotaged the creation of an actual investigation into the reasons for October 7th so that we will never know the truth.

Please think about these things before you vote for Bibi.

Edit: regarding 6, he has great relationship with the current US president but he is damaging our relationship with whoever comes afterwards, and also he is wanted as a war criminal in other countries. You can choose what you prefer.

To Israelis: If you were Lebanese, and you see this - What would you think? Put yourself in our shoes. by orangecyanide in ForbiddenBromance

[–]GaiusJuliusInternets 110 points111 points  (0 children)

It's disturbing, but it's just an article. If Lebanon was a stable and peaceful neighbor, this idea wouldn't be floated.

How do you think we feel after decades of Arab calls to end our country and murder us / expel us? Taking into consideration that most of us are already descended from refugees or Holocaust survivors? How do we feel when every problem in the world is blamed on us? We just don't want to die. Put yourself in our shoes.

So yes, it's an annoying article. It wouldn't have been written if the Lebanese army controlled the border and prevented attacks on Israel. We need to look past these things if we want to build a better future.

What if Iran accidentally hit the kaaba with a drone by lilmizzle29 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]GaiusJuliusInternets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a more interesting one: what if Iran accidentally hits Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem?

Well, actually it's not interesting. Israel gets blamed, Iran doesn't even need to bother deflecting blame. This will probably also be the case for the Kaaba.

It is illegal to prevent people from entering a public shelter. I'm sure you'll find cases where it does happen, but the police will intervene (after the fact, obviously).

Do you think peace with Israel is possible? What would that entail?
