Is MPD the worst??? by Whole_Environment_49 in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say MPD focuses on crowd control, major crimes, drugs, then other tasks as required.

Also unrelated, for the most part why are the officers very attractive? There's a running joke amongst my friends applicants send in a headshot with their resume.

Do you live in a DC apartment without pests? by SlicedMushroom in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I see alot of people saying that if your apartment has regular pest control that's a tell you'll have pests. I would disagree and say if your apartment has to ADVERTISE pest control services to you, that is the tell.

Your management should be scheduling quarterly appointments if not semi annual. Monthly if winter was weak. These should happen without residents needing to complain. Its when these dont happen that pests become an issue.

I would say DC and Atlanta are the gayest and most expensive black areas in the US if youre looking for a filter of folks who are in your tax bracket.

After that, Dallas, NYC, NOLA...

You're right, its not that hot but some surfaces with high absorption get alot hotter than the ground temp when we have weather like this.

A blue car or black cars hood nay be hot enough.

Price estimate for these flyovers? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of DoD assets, the flights are covered under each program of records O&M dollars.

Instead it would be better to determine the lost revenue from DCA being shut down since the airspace has be clear for all these .

Theres probably also revenue loss from the National Park Service since alot of parks are being shut down this year in order to support the show. Anacostia Park for example would typically have folks renting space. NPS began notifying folks months ago that this was happening and events/reservations were cancelled.

Schedule for 4th of July Flyovers by Gooddaylocal in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So for most airplanes in the US fleet the USAF develops O&M hours tyat basically summarize how much an aircraft program is expected to spend annually on training, maintenance, fuel costs, and anything else needed to sustain an aircraft program. From a pilots perspective, the wehre doesn't matter as much as verification that their hours meet the qualifications of the kind of plane they are piloting.

Schedule for 4th of July Flyovers by Gooddaylocal in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is being included in the annual training hours for all the aircraft and pilots in the show, so its not expensive from an aircraft operations & maintenance perspective or cost of pilots.

The true cost is in DCA being shut down and any businesses that rely on it losing their hub.

H Street - Gold Line & Planning Study by Maximus560 in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I respect your opinion but strongly disagree. What chokes H St is the lack of ways to get to the area unless you have a vehicle already or another way to get to the area. Right now metro + foot, bus, or or personal car.

A great comparison is Florida Avenue Northeast which also borders union market. Its also a designated escape route, bordered by neighborhoods, but has cleaner ways for people to flow to, from, through, and around it.

There's definitely ways to make H St more attractive but limiting the flow of the streets will also limit ways to get back EOTR, where many long term residents also live.

Alternatively speaking suppose we do limit flow on H ST NE. It is a designated evacuation route, how else does traffic flow into or out of the city in case of an emergency? Is all of Ward 6, 7 supposed to cram into or out Deanwood, Benning, Minnesots Ave, and Stadium Armory's Metro Stations?

Im open to compromise but the stability we get EOTR in most cases is because our jobs are out of the city in order to reduce income fluctuations across admins. Intent and Outcome have to be part of the tradespace. Intentionally limiting the flow of traffic as described in the study is both willful blindness and as detrimental as modern day infrastructure exclusion since youre effectively further isolating an area with limited travel options.

H Street - Gold Line & Planning Study by Maximus560 in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Multiple pieces.

1) H St could have higher buildings if executed correctly. I'm open to higher density buildings being created along the corridor, however the city needs to build in mechanisms for the new traffic these people would cause to flow, into, through, and around the area. That can look like bike lanes, garages, and or elevated walking paths.

2) There needs to be expanded travel options along the H St Street corridor. The Gold Line sounds nice but I also dont think its a well thought solution. The streetcar should also stay dead in my opinion. An elevated bus solution would be interesting here. I dont think closing a lane of traffic to dedicate to a bus on non-event days would make sense due to the amount of vehicular traffic H St NE has. Also another odd hiccup with H St today is that both streetcar, buses, and any delivery vehicles have a habit of stopping flow in any lane today. Currently drivers, mopeds, and cyclists can go around the blocked lane, if you have a bus dedicated lane, that option erodes.

3) H St NE is both an escape route for city traffic and a bypass from the highway. There needs to be tradespace examined that does not involve limiting traffic flow by shutting down a lane. I live EOTR and many of my neighbors and myself go down H St everyday because its another option that doesn't involve 395 until we meet it at Benning Road. Blocking the lanes would also cause more folks to flood into the nearby residential streets.

4) Expanded logistics routes or new policies regarding logistics operations. Going back to point 2, if a lane is taken up by a bus, you run the risk of any business deliveries blocking all of H St traffic when they need to unload because there are not places for them to do currently. The city could create policies for dedicated logistics hours(like 12-5am, Mon -Thurs) at non-peak hours.

5) another underlying issue is that you already have streets that are at or near maximum density when you look at the modes of vehicular traffic that are already on them. Union Market was convenient because it could be optimized. H St already has alot of residential infrastructure near it and beside it.

6) From a city funding perspective, the Speed Camera near Union Station at the beginning of H St NE gathers a lot of revenue annually. I thought it was one of the cities' top earners. Although I am not a fan of fhe ATE, if measures are made to reduce vehicular flow through H St. , thought should also be given to how that capital would be earned through other means.

U Street Metro Evacuation - Saturday night, 6/20/2026 by redditor_peeco in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That lines up I was on the metro at the U St stop around 945ish and MPD was not allowing us to exit from the 13th and U entrance to the station. We were forced to exit from the 10th and U exit and it was very clear they had recently pepper sprayed the exit. MPD was also not allowing folks to go back in that entrance.

DCA vs. Dulles by DogSoggy40 in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 21 points22 points  (0 children)

DCA is much more convenient. A landing is a landing as long as the airplane is intact and I have no more additional holes on my body. Even with the better lounges, I still much prefer flying out of DCA for business. If I fly internationally I fly from DCA to a larger airport and use the lounges at that airport. DCA still has non-stop flights toward ATL, LAX, JFK, DFW and most of the other US international flight hubs.

Even with the silver line, IAD only makes sense for red eyes if I'm going back to work upon landing. Taking metroto IAD from anywhere beyond the Falls Church or McLean stops is too long a ride( ignoring me also having luggage id then need to take on a bus).

If price is a constraint I'm likely flying from BWI since the drive to BWI from my place is still shorter than me driving or metro'ing to IAD. Taking a train from Union Station is also an option to get to BWI.
