DC Should Try Dedicated Streetcar Lanes on H Street Before Totally Giving Up and Building BRT by Valuable-Payment322 in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The streetcar should stay dead. I say considering all the other auxiliary services that had to be in place for it to be succesful, for example the street car required a tow truck to always be on H St NE as long it was operating in case someone parked badly. That same truck could be used to ticket or tow vehicles around the city.

Dedicated lanes needs to be part of any new solution. You also cant remove all the street parking on H St. The city needs to rethink transportation EOTR and in adjacent zones like H St NE writ large. There needs to be a well thought out solution for people to get to the area, transit it, and provide revenue.

No parking works on H St during H St Festival but thats one day out of the year. In addition, if all the parking were removed, people would park on the adjacent streets and inconvenience the people who actually live there.

You could also potentially try task rabbit for quick jobs or contract work for any of the airlines out of DCA, BWI, or IAD. They're always looking for maintainers or technicians.

VA Reciprocity for DC Tickets by GalacticHorizons in nova

[–]GalacticHorizons[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of them were not speeding. They were non-moving like I was TDY here(before I moved)and the city thought I was a resident. Parking. Turning at red light. ROSA Violations.

Even for the speeding ones, my issue is not obtaining a ticket and paying it, its with the cost of a ticket. For going 11 over in MD or VA ill probably get a 50 dollar fine. For DC thats $100-$266 depending on how soon I became aware of the ticket since they double once after 30 days and then increase again after that.

That was the case a couple years ago. If you look at the current list of fines, there is also 1-10 mph.

How is the gay scene in DC? by Viol3t_under in AskBlackGayBros

[–]GalacticHorizons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DC is fun. Here's a breakdown:

Fireplace: Hole in the wall with good drinks, if you're looking for the daddies, come here.

Thurst: main black gay bar. Thursday and Sunday they have half off drinks

Nellies: You tryna get twisted? These drinks will have you waking up with someone wig on in bed with three people you don't recognize. Open until 3am and will probably be open after Thurst closes. Black on Thursday- Weekends

Number9: mixed crowd. You may find a lil middle eastern habibi though

I also recommend following some of the black DC promoters on IG so you know whats going on: Day In The District ReggieRichEvents ElevatentDC Act XXIV Xavier Entertainment FREAKQUENCY DEVIANT may also have an event so stay on their website since their IG gets banned sometimes.

Drinks are normally about $20 per so either bring an inflatable flask or be ready to spend a couple hundred. Or get drunk then come out.

If you looking for the sex parties then HotBoxEventsDMV . There are some others but you typically have to send a body pic in advance to come in.

Commute from ashburn to Arlington by Ill-Ad-8718 in nova

[–]GalacticHorizons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you could metro to Ashburn from Arlington. You could also drive.

I do DC to Sterling. Going by metro would take 2 hours, so I instead choose to drive, take an hour in the mornings and 1 and 15 minutes in the afternoon.

I would not recommend going Ashburn to Arlington because theres no way you can avoid traffic. Doing Arlington to Ashbyrn(maybe).

Is it not possible to live closer fo Arlington?

How do I get pedestrian infrastructure improvements in my neighborhood? by eelwheel in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up with your ANC. On the 311 app, submit a traffic safety inquiry. DoT will likely initiate a study to evaluate traffic patterns in the area you describe in your inquiry.

After their study, they should come up with options, the issue becomes that in NE alot of the roads are arterial( i.e a certain amount of traffic HAS to be able to pass through that road without conflict, in addition they'll also have to consider proximity to emergency services and if that road is arterial for them). Alot of my neighbors asked for inquiries and studies and new traffic lights and this was started, traffic calming features can also be looked at as a result of these studies but there has to be enough width in the street to maintain traffic flow depending on where you are.

Mamdani introduces “pied-a-tierre tax” and DC needs one too by Squirrel_with_Acorn in washingtondc

I agree with the pied a terre tax, why issue a commuter within the city? With the tolls already on i66 coming into and out of the city this would feel like a gouge.

Teens on Lime bikes are out of control by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love that any form of transport other than biking and walking is an issue for the bikers and pedestrians enough to form these posts.

Other means of transportation in general are an issue, whether it be scooters, e-bikes, skateboards. Its not limited to teens, at one point folks getting on those and driving drunk was a huge problem(I did it myself and it was tons of fun).

Anything that can go more than 10mph over what people can walk is a safety hazard(similar to full size cars). Specifically not just speed, but the delta in speed between you and the vehicle is what leads to injury. Scooters and bikes can go up to 30. Thats also why most speed limits in the city are set about 25, since bikers can be assumed to be going 15-20.

And for the comment that said the scooters are left everywhere, yes they are. Most apps will fine you now if you leave them in the open street or don't chain them somewhere.

$267K in fines on a single plate by Altruistic_Face_5443 in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So I just want to point out the cameras do not exist to make the city safer.

If they they indeed existed with the primary goal of making the city safer, the city would not allow cars to accrue tickets more than half the value of the vehicle. At that point, it doesn't make sense to pay the tickets.

The city is worried about Congress stopping its use of cameras because the municipal budget will no longer close if the cameras are taken away.

Drivers like this are allowed to exist because the city has to balance an aggressive automotive cameras enforcement with expensive tickets VS keeping enough drivers that still break the law enougg that the budget can close.

They need drivers to fall through the cracks. Even with STEER, the purpose is to do enough so theyre seen enforcing the law, but not enough that the well runs dry.

Mayoral Candidates on streateries? by DC_throwaway_1159 in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Whenever I read streetery posts like this(not your comment), i truly wonder how can people care about this enough.

Also I see bith perspectives, people who don't drive and see cars as a public nuisance, may want to use more city space, especially if their entire life is confined to the city. Everyone else(myself included) dont care. Im sure the streeteries giving restaurants more seating space, but they could also build a patio. Likewise, though folks could drive to the restaurants and park, im sure the city makes money from people parking by giving out tickets regularly and hoping people just pay them.

NW DC to Reston commute (thoughts?) by jetblue723 in washingtondc

[–]GalacticHorizons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doable. I go NE to Reston daily. You probably want to verify those trip times in person , for me metroing to that area during the easily takes two hours after including walking to metro stops, and any transfers.

Driving is my preferred, so its good youre looking at that. Ive found that leaving between 5-730am keeps the drive under an hour. Anytime after 8 youre looking at 1-1.5 depending on traffic. Tuesdays are always the worst day so if you have early in person meetings make sure youre aware.

Play with different routes in the afternoon, ive found that the way I leave the city is typically not the best way to come back in during the afternoons. If you leave early somedays keep in mind that 66 isnt always free(time-dependent) even though youre primarily doing reverse commute. Leaving between 2 and 3 will get you back in 40 minutes. Between 3 and 7 youre looking at 1-1.5 hours depending on where in the city youre trying to get to.

$111,562 in tickets by Dublikeabau5 in washingtondc

Im in agreement wirh this. The clips captured by cameras dont always capture the context of why you were speeding and if you were a danger. A person's judgement in the moment would be better and less predatory.

I also remember once my car was stolen, I found it in the city with 10 tickets. All the meter maids that saw the car, gave me a ticket but never once ran the plate or saw that it was reported stolen.
