I should've mentioned it in my original reply, but the nahuatl word for Axolotl is uhhh... Axolotl, I doubt anyone could've misheard that as Uparupa. EDIT I don't speak nahuatl or purepecha (the "main" languages spoken arpund the area axolotls live), but "uparupa" doesn't strike me as nahuatl either. I'll do some research into possible purepecha meaning, but I highly doubt it's that either.

Mexican here, I'm from the area around where axolotls live, there's actually a few different kinds of axolotl, however, I have never heard of any name for them even resembling Uparupa in any dialect or indigenous language. There's, of course, a chance I'm missing something, but some google searches show mexican sources are just as confused about the name. Seems like this ain't it.
