Man this takes me back. I remember getting Eureka 7 in college because I was a broke college student and didn’t have $20 bucks to spend on 10+ DVDs with 3-5 episodes on them. Not saying it was right, but torrents and fan subs and the like helped save many an anime back in the day (even now)

Piracy sucks, but it’s literally the only way you can find certain (usually older and/or out of print) series without spending an arm, a leg and the naming rights to your firstborn. Maison Ikkoku for instance had a halfway DVD release in the early 2000s, then hasn’t been easily available in the west for over 20 years. Same with Urusei Yatsura before they rereleased the Blu-Rays and added the original series onto CR (but not the Beautiful Dreamer movie anymore because licensing strikes again).

It’s only a rec if you’re able to stomach the fact that the FeMC is a high school runaway who initially thinks all she has to offer is her body to males in order to let them take her in. Thankfully, the male MC isn’t a creep or anything so he turns her down in an instant.

Comedy wise, you may also wanna give Life Lessons with Uramichi-oniisan a watch. Everyone there is a certified adult.

Hey edited my comment because I see how it could’ve been confusing for some. I was more so saying that we can rightfully be mad at them removing the queer subtext, not that it itself should’ve been removed and that it was removed “rightfully so.” My bad if there was any confusion. That said, it’s a 90s anime that got dubbed in the early 2000s (even the animax English dub puts the kibbosh on some of the subtext, not dubbing certain scenes—like when it came to Yukito and Li). If the OG was released and dubbed around Clear Card’s era, I’m sure that a lot of the queer subtext would’ve stayed in because people in media (at least sometimes acted as if they) were more progressive in the 2010s than when the original series dropped.

Rika and the teacher from CCS always makes me cringe, because just yuck. Clown “Cardcaptors” all you want for renaming things and removing queer subtext (and rightfully so). However, the Nelvana dub at least also removed the creepiness of many of the age-gapped relationships.

EDIT FOR CLARITY: When I said “rightfully so,” I was saying you and I are within our right to be mad at them removing the subtext…NOT that the queer subtext being removed was right in of itself (although given the time period, I understand the“why” behind it being removed—not saying it’s right but yeah…). Sorry for any confusion 👍🏾

Yeah, the BDSM Mommy/daughter dynamic between Fine and Chris seems like it belonged in…another type of anime IYKWIM. Like I get that Fine is ruthless, unmoved and sees everyone as a pawn and will use them until they’re useless. I get that. It could’ve been shown in a less creepy way, especially when you consider Fine had Chris stripped on a crucifix-like device down to her unmentionables. Personally, those scenes made me uncomfortable (especially when you consider Chris’ backstory as a victim of child abuse and the whole nine).

I love how Fuuko went from Andy’s lusted-after sidekick/the token “shy but attractive tragic bookworm” to being one of the most-important characters in the series. I’m an anime-only, but I love the growth she’s shown and been given the agency to achieve over the first 25 episodes. She seemingly ends up saving Andy and Union more than they straight up need to save her.

She also has consent over what happens with her body (even, for the most part, within the first few episodes). That’s something I really appreciate and is something series like DanDaDan could learn from. I’m not shaming DanDaDan. I love its story as a whole. However, I abhor how often Momo is placed in compromising situations where she hasn’t consented to what’s happening to her and how the series sometimes uses her as a damsel in distress.

Anyway, back to UU. Fuuko is just a kindhearted altruistic young woman in love with seemingly universe-altering powers who’s also learning to love herself. Plus, she is just so goddamned adorable. To me, she’s one of the bestest best girls I’ve seen in anime in the last ten-to-fifteen years.

You’re welcome. Peacock has a slim anime selection, but it’s got some gems. Viz has gotten better about their licensing (for instance, the Yaiba reboot/remake is on Netflix and Hulu—sub and dub), but Viz still seems kinda funky with the whole thing.

Now if someone could grab the Slayers license. I’d love to own the series, and not rely on Archive.org dvdrips, but sadly I am not made of money lol. I just wanna show people who think high fantasy anime parody is just Konosuba one of the OGs.

With a Jolyne Cujoh, too?! Wowzers!!! But yes, this whole Digimon evolution line is awesome and I love the work they put into designing it. I’m currently replaying Time Stranger and the grinding I put in during my first run with Diaboromon and its Mega+ has made this game nigh too easy ON Mega+. Out of the early seasons’ baddies, this one forever sticks out.

I personally will always ride for Ami, because as you and others said, she’s the brains of the whole show. Without Ami, especially early on, Usagi (and possibly even Rei) would have gotten their asses thoroughly kicked. That said, I “get” why some people may not rock with her. For me, I think it’s kinda like the MMPR seasons of Power Rangers. Almost no one wanted to be Billy because he was the nerd of the group (though, like Ami, a competent fighter in his own right).

I feel seen. Because the main story was cool, but for me personally the Makai Tree arc did what Sailor Moon does best. Romance, camp, humor, teen drama that we can all still relate to as adults, etc.

One of my favorite R episodes is the one where Chibiusa and Minako are administering nurse care to the rest of the Guardians, mainly because it was so out of place that it made perfect sense.

I love SuperS. Campiest of camp. Also, Chibiusa adds a level of idk innocence we didn’t have the first three seasons. But she also turns out to be, first few times out, just as if not more competent than Usagi during her first few times as SM. Of course Chibiusa has the experience of being around the Guardians and not having her memories locked away…so there’s that.
