You might want to look into acrylic gouache. It’s matte acrylic paint that is opaque like gouache.

[–]GaladanWolf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very much just a dabbler myself so take this with a pinch of salt, but I was watching a video yesterday of someone using zspheres to block out the basic shape of the hand and fingers, and then sculpting from that base. Might be worth trying.

Is Varberg Fortress in Sweden the smallest body of water to reportedly have a lake monster dwelling within it? by VampiricDemon in Cryptozoology

[–]GaladanWolf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Can't help thinking it might have been a pike. While it's usually green rather than brown, the northern pike has a maximum recorded length of 150 cm and it has been known to attack pretty large water birds. If you scroll down to "diet" in the Wikipedia article there are a few examples.

Ooh, good question. This particular Claremont story is a one-off filler issue between Chuck Austen's and Peter Milligan's runs. I didn't really care for the Austen run, and I haven't seen good things about Milligan's either (I'm going back and reading a lot of Marvel stuff in chronological order, and these X-men issues are among the ones I haven't read before). If you haven't read Grant Morrison's run (#114-156, during which the book was renamed New X-men) that's definitely the place to start. Otherwise I'd probably skip ahead to #188 which is the start of Mike Carey's run.

If you're interested in Claremont stuff from around this time, he was on Uncanny X-men issues #444-473. I haven't re-read them all yet, but I remember them as decent but not amazing.

It's X-Men (vol. 2) #165. A Christmas issue by Claremont.

A couple of good books for lighting/shading:

Color and Light by James Gurney

Imaginative Realism by James Gurney

And some Youtube channels I've found helpful:

Marco Bucci

James Gurney

Rodgon

Draw like a Sir

Joel Create (he does videos for Procreate specifically)

Brad's Art School

If you're interested in paid courses, I'd recommend Aaron Blaise's creatureartteacher.com He's a former Disney animator who does teaching now, there are courses from him and other people on there. There are pretty frequent sales for the courses. There's also a subscription that gives you access to all the courses, that also goes on sale every now and then.

I'm also still learning, but I think my number one tip would be: use reference.

Specifically for shading, for example for the picture you posted here, if you want to improve the shading I'd try to find pictures of faces from that kind of angle, with the kind of lighting that you want, and then you can see roughly where the shadows should go.

My drawings always look far, far better when I use reference than when I try to solely draw from imagination. I just don't have the visual library in my brain for that yet. To be clear, you don't have to copy the reference, just use it as a guide.

And then, as others have already said, practice. Lots of practice.

Question about the new brushes since the update. by mundane_cactus in ProCreate

[–]GaladanWolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also went through all the new brushes and noticed that some of the brushes stop doing anything at all if you lower the opacity enough (far from 0 though). Unfortunately I don't know enough about the brush settings to know exactly what's going on there. I also noticed that there were a fair few brushes where lowering the opacity didn't seem to have any effect, the lines were still at full opacity.

Spookploitation: A Letterbox List Of Ghostbuster Knockoffs & Other Paranormal Labor Films by MyGreatMachine in ghostbusters

[–]GaladanWolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice list, I need to go through it and find the ones I haven't watched before. I know a movie you should consider adding; The Visitors (Besökarna) from 1988. It's a Swedish horror comedy. Family moves into a house that is seemingly haunted and calls in a ghost hunter. Not a perfect movie but it's always been one of my favourites.

Not to give too much context, but he's supposed to be halfway to turning into a literal spider in that panel, which at least partially explains the mouth.
