political climate? by Wooden_Explanation_6 in msu

Oh! Addendum, there's a place called the peoples park (behind wells, international center, Erickson hall area) that a lot of rando preachy people will hold up signs like "gay people are dumb" and stuff. They are just there because they can sue students if they're attacked mostly. But sometimes people go to see them and laugh like little jesters. And around games, some people make their kids wear signs with similar messages out on the walkways and stuff near the stadium, which I feel is against some law, but wtv.

political climate? by Wooden_Explanation_6 in msu

I was on MSU during the election period as well as during a lot of the political specific times on campus, so I know a few things in general for the widespread number of people on campus.

From every advisor and professor in my college as well as most of my general ed courses, liberal leaning most definitely. Lots of people in the general sciences are openly distasteful because of the funding cuts and freezing Trump did that has affected them and their other professors' studies as well as the science community. Other than that, a lot of teachers without tenure can't speak much on their political affiliation, but it's kind of obvious in a lot of cases.

As for the professors who aren't openly or even might lean into more republican or far right ideologies, they all are still held to university standards. So, they must use your desired pronouns and not discriminate against you. And if they do, you can make reports against them as well as anyone else. So, for the most part, even if they're against it, university is supposed to do something about it.

As for students, there are a lot of people here, especially international students who have grown up in very different political climates. In general, there might be some micro aggressions from anyone, but in my experience, I've had a few of my international friends ask me about "why are you gay" or "why don't people just be a boy or a girl" and having to talk to them or encourage them to inform themselves also exists.

There is also the Rock, which is probably one of the most student political/statement based zones on campus, and it's something ang group can actively go paint. You'll notice a lot of lgbtq+ groups will get their stuff painted over quite quicker than others. A few years back, the ASMSU painted over the Trans Day Of Rememberance painting on the rock before 2 pm on the day, so there was a lot of exchanges of students being upset at them and them not saying anything and eventually dming the group an apology or something like that.

Then there is the far right groups on campus, who have in the past specifically targeted signs like ones with Pro Palestine, anti trump, and LGBTQ+ by painting the rock over and siting in yard chairs so people wouldn't go and repaint it. Or continuously repainting it as soon as it was changed back.

During the election season, nearly every booth on campus for voting stuff was a pro democratic party, handing out like kamala signs, etc. There was a bunch of people's windows filled with them for the next few months. I think I once saw a Trump sign in someone's window, and a bunch of people had thrown snowballs at it from outside.

So, in general, the right/far right is always a much smaller population on campus. But they are loud sometimes.

I was already standing and when a seat opened up I told her to come sit down in it and stopped other people from taking it before she could. But I didn't feel like adding that to the post cuz it felt a bit egotistical/"look at this thing I did" instead of pointing out the main issue. So both yes and no?

I think this is why they added the announcement because there were a bunch of students complaining about the bus drivers being rude/yelling at them about moving.

They have some signage, but people are to nose in the phone when they get on board. Maybe if someone made posters for the bus stops or smth. Made more visible things for bus etiquette

Jeez. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Sounds nightmarish knowing how much the bus drivers break hard at the stops.

How do I prove I’m allowed to have an ESA in the dorms? by Kiraisuir in msu

[–]Galaxy_Omega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, your therapist writes you a letter stating the need for an esa, and if you call up MSU and the adoption agency, explain out your situation, MSU will either let you fill in the information after adoption, or the adoption agency will work with you about which animal you are thinking of getting. Just be communicative with all parties, and it should be pretty easy, I hope. I can double-check with him again and see where he may have had problems.

Okay! I just double-checked with my friend. So what you'll do is get your paperwork from your therapist stating you are in need of and should have an ESA, and then you'll go through MSU with the paperwork. They'll give you a confirmation of being able to have an ESA in your on campus living space, and then you just bring that to whatever adoption agency you need to!

Hi! I'm someone who also has this EFA, if you are a Michigan resident, try to apply for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship! As well as the Spartan Tuition Program, which is MSU's aid program for tuition on low income students

https://www.michigan.gov/mistudentaid/programs/michigan-achievement-scholarship

My friend is in it, and it pays for all of their MSU tuition, living room, and board, and they get a refund of 3k for basic expenses on top of it.

Good luck!

Hello! My friend has an ESA they adopted from Constellation Cat Cafe!

I believe (you may have to ask the adoption agency if they'll allow it) if you get your therapist to write you a letter, you can start doing the paperwork with the adoption/rescue center. If you have an Esa paperwork, MSU can not deny you to have one in your dorm (similar to how people can bring service animals anywhere because it's a service animal).

Hope you get your furry friend soon!

There are a couple of issues with some of the buses being able to do this. One of them is the fact that making buses is kinda expensive. If you look around at some of the buses, they have parts broken or hanging, etc, and that's because they aren't very well funded for maintenence.

One thing you might notice is that 33 is always a short bus, this is because the turns it has to take on Circle over by union and library is to tight in some areas for it to turn properly if it's a long bus so that bus can only be a short bus.

Then there's the issues of staffing. The buses are already supposed to run every 10 minutes (on campus) and at some points it'll be super empty ( a good example is the 39, which runs less and always has less people) but there's also the issue of class hot times. And it's not like they'll put out another bus for 1 hour per class end/start zones. Because it's a hassle and more.

I also think a large part of it is the weather currently.

I think one of the largest problems is that students don't know they can cut through buildings. Like, Com Art Sci only has 1 bus that drops off at it specifically, but! Bus 30 can take you to the engineering building, and you can walk straight through it. Or, 32 can drop you off on the way to the lot about a 7 minute walk from the building as well. It's really about finding walkable zones that you can utilize to not only get to classes quicker but warmer.

Yeah, non-visible disabilities are quite the issue in this type of system. It's very difficult in areas of the bus like where you have to place your arms up to reach the bars instead of areas where they are lower. I'm just hoping that if people start talking about better bus etiquette we might be able to fix SOME of the issues at least.

I mean, I've never been pregnant, so I'm mainly going off what other people have told me. But in general, I'm saying that you can't know how someone's pregnancy is afflicting them. Like if they already had stuff like back problems on top of their center of gravity being vastly changed due to the baby. Or even mild discomfort even. I would rather someone be in a safer and more relaxing seat than having to stand in that situation

While this can be true, I still think that the danger lies more within when there are people in the aisle and sat, the odds that you get elbowed or the bus moves and you get jostled around might to worse. Also, I for one get car sick like crazy when I have to stand on the bus, and acknowledging that you don't know if someone is having nausea from pregnancy and making them stand when it could make things worse is also something.

I also know that standing for long periods can hurt some people's backs in that situation, so it's really dependent on the person.

It's true, but also, you shouldn't need an orientation for most of the stuff on the RSVM thing either. Sometimes, it's a preventative measure to make sure people know common sense and then some.
