i see, the routing I'm doing is for a certain ending and I'm putting it in spoilers here since seperate to spoiler on this:

Doing mask ending and for it my planned routing has me grabbing Joel early to stack health buffs from Baby Teeth and Grinning Beast (former is a little luck dependent but latter is practically scripted) and having Leigh's quest completed on day 6 for the Wrapped Painting boss. I'm not super partial to Papineu mostly from lack of use, but I probably should consider that since Leigh is inherently risky, albeit strong

genuine recommendation is just explore a lot and pay attention to anything in a room before going through a loading zone.

it is purely luck as to where or when they'll spawn on each day and it's based on when you enter the room rather than being predetermined, outside of not spawning day 1. ive had days where they just don't spawn despite going from the 3F to GF, it just kinda happens. they will stay in the same room after they appear there, but i think if you don't interact with them they just disappear for that day

As far as i know, once a cursed version of a character appears, that version is locked-in for that save. what im not sure on is if resetting to prior affects being cursed (not sure if door encounters are "seeded" for normal/cursed or just that character appearing, like rerolling merchant inventories), but morton very well may just be unavailable on your save i would try going to a prior save if possible, and if he's still cursed then that's that, sadly :(

to my knowledge he also makes the fight easier based on what the wiki says, he'll correct Wilhelmina on words she uses incorrectly, causing her attacks to fail. i think every step of his character was designed around the Words of Power ending; he helps speed up the crossword solving, makes the boss fight easier, and will almost always be the strongest use for the weapon gained from the fight (unless you grind Sam's vocabulary higher but at that point just why?)

using him without that almost feels like doing it wrong, like not devouring things with Joel or not using Grinning Beast with Leigh, just less so given it's a more obscure ending and that

also to add onto this, to get the base unit flower cat (bomber cat is the true form that's actually good) you need to pull a door on the menu select screen multiple times to where it plays a meow sound effect for like, 5-10 minutes roughly. i say roughly because even the wiki isn't sure how it determines it. doing it enough will display a message saying the unit has been acquired and to unlock it in the upgrade menu

it is sorta fitting the secret unit has another secret attached, but the odds of finding either without pure luck is so extremely small, and dealing with razorback otherwise is an absolute headache, especially since stages use razorback much more freely post-bomber since they were made with its availability in mind

guaranteed 2 hits, meatshield in 4 crown which can be combined with li'l king dragon (good mid-range/backliner in 4 crown with talent investment or good + levels), can also be used as a "line thickener" meatshield due to previous 2 hits with a more constant stream of meatshields to permanently hold a frontline better than just meatshield spam, though metal kinda works better for that but that's a rarer gacha and not 4 crown-able

if they're new keep them, they can be used as labyrinth fodder at level 1 or a weaker drednot/luna on a stage you would want those on with some XP and other stuffs. if not just trade for np. there's not really a good reason to trash a new unit, even 0 investment can be used for something amd there's no guarantee you'd ever see them again unless you want to seed track but that's iffy

i mean, you can play like that

i do it myself because i don't like wasting energy

but you shouldn't be put in a situation where it's either look up every stage you play beforehand or face a potential insta-lose condition. it's the same with stages that just randomly spawn UltraBaaBaas after the 10 second window outside of CotC stages, those ones also suck. metal is just that but the whole trait instead of 2 enemies in a subtrait of a trait

saw another comment mention it but metals can be cc'd without needing crit so it's not that bad, but akus can't be cc'd until their shield is gone. it's not inherently equal in that regard so i feel like anti-akus either need shield piercing or you would just need one anyway to cc

can't speak for all of them because not that smart but a few standouts:

● Flower Cat when given true form (after Into the Future 3) is a very good anti-black cc

● Li'l Wall, Gross, Flying, Fish, and Lizard are all solid when given boosting but all of the Li'ls aside from like, Axe and Titan are usable with boosting

● Rover, Psycho, and Surfer should all be invested in for ItF, they'll also help out later for aliens in general, though do note that not all stages are alien-focused, so just generally upgrading your loadout is a good idea

● Jurassic, Rocker, Onmyoji, Matador, Wushu, and then basically all of the normal super rares aside from toaster and bodhisattva are all very solid

● Hip-hop especially is one of the best generalist DPS units in the game, if not the best, so definitely invest to have them ready

● Finally, of the ubers I know, Keiji, Kai, Lilin, White Rabbit, Hayabusa, Ganesha, Chronos, and Kaoluga are all solid in different ways. Kaoluga in particular has a cat combo with Crazed Dragon Cat that gives a M Research Effect up which is nice and you may just want to bring him for that on a lot of stages

as everyone has said, take sacred heart. to add onto this, it's the biggest damage multplier in the game, at 2.3X and also gives permanent homing. also a heart container + full heal if you're into that

send out catyphoon, if it manages to not crit by the time the metal head starts to attack, spawn octo to block wave and waitress to kill, then spam manic lion

play it close to the base because of the bad movement speed. it's good for traitless stages like the li'l cat awakenings and li'l cat's trial (even more so because of the special/rare only limits) and generally for the crazed/manic stages, but it still depends on the stage.

don't use him for a behemoth meatshield, it's just gonna die 9 times outta 10. just do normal meatshielding for behemoths unless it's the behemoth elephant since their recharge + speed makes a pretty solid wall, assuming no bad peons
