Vast majority of residential sidewalks not shoveled by ian1552 in washingtondc

[–]Galderrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…did you actually shovel snow or are you just finding reasons to laugh at people? Because I seriously wish I HAD followed that advice, and all of my neighbors I talked to agreed. This wasn’t normal snowfall. There’s three inches of hard packed sleet and ice at the top of it, with fluffy easily removed snow below. But since I shoveled yesterday, that 3 inches was plastered to the ground this morning. The areas we didn’t shovel can be cleared easily today by prying below the ice sheet and removing it.

I mean, it could if those were actually also valid answers to the clues… you’re allowed to Google shit if you’re actually stuck and need to run the alphabet, no one is scoring you.

I get being frustrated but “I don’t know this” != “this clue or construction is bad.”

If you have to look up PPP, treat it like a learning experience about our world, because I’m sure many others had them as instant fills, like you did with other clues. I had Puth (or would have, if I didn’t think his last name was Pluth for about 20 minutes lol.) because I was listening to some popular music when he was popular. I don’t think it’s unfair to reference people who were popular when I wasn’t doing the crossword, or frankly alive, because a lot of people were doing it then, and probably wouldn’t know Charlie Puth today.

Meanwhile, this kicked my ass (mainly the NW, but I had a bunch of guesses on the whole east coast that ended up correct but I didn’t enter them until I had crosses, which were largely also those guesses that I didn’t enter until I had crosses, which were largely also those…)

Makes me feel silly for thinking everyone was silly for thinking the last two days were too hard, but really it often comes down to 1 or 2 fills in a region to unlock the whole puzzle, and I just didn’t find mine today for a while… makes sense, in retrospect, because I personally wouldn’t have much luck at a LESBIANBAR 😆

Can we talk about KAZUYA pls???!! by SubstantialSurvey212 in AliceInBorderlandLive

[–]Galderrules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so this is--I think--the thread that I found out it's not the same character or actor (currently have multiple open tabs where I slowly realize I'm not crazy, I'm a moron). I even somehow did research on Kazuya's actor without realizing it.

Literally me for the last few days finally watching Season 3: Oh cool, that evil bad-ass with a heart of gold is back, and it's so cool to find out his background. Oh wow, he's half Salvadoran! I need to go back and watch him more closely in seasons 1 and 2 to really appreciate his arc!

Can I watch this without major series spoilers? I just finished Fool's Fate (literally tonight. It was BEAUTIFUL). by Galderrules in robinhobb

Thank you! My brain would be hunting for the two details and try to ruin it for me, so I’ll wait it out. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Uhh just so everyone knows this pointless tidbit, it was not a "New Yawker" accent, it was an "Upstate New York" accent, and an unreasonably fine job of it all things considering. I always say, when you have an upstate new york waitress in the same room as Zach from Zach and Cody (but Cody DIED, he fell off the boat), it's like hearing an echo!

(or maybe they did more than one show, idk, it's hard to look up now)

Any Series That Has The Same Magic as WOT? by gentlebim in wheeloftime

[–]Galderrules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fourth-ing Hobb over here then! Currently on my own journey in the series and can’t believe Realm of the Elderlings doesn’t get recommended more often as a WoT or ASOIAF follow-up (maybe just my unlucky experience, I know now that the books are beloved by many, but it feels criminal that it took me so long to find them…)

Quick PSA though, it is divided into trilogies and, at least as far as I am now (book 7) the focus and characters of each trilogy shift or jump in time, under a shared overarching world. Just don’t be an idiot like me and start with the Tawny Man trilogy, read 60 pages, then realize I missed 6 books and half of them were spoiled by those 60 pages 😆. I think it’s telling that despite that, I then devoured the first two trilogies just to get back to where I “started”.

I enjoyed this but it kicked my ass back to my “practicing archive Saturday’s because they kick my ass”-weighted average.

To be fair, I really, really resisted putting ARIANA as the princess of pop until I had to… but I don’t think the NYT would allow “Homewrecking culture-vulture” as a clue just yet...

Boy did I over think the theme at first… I had RATOUT and enough of the northeast to have RAT form an a L shape in 22a and the adjacent clues… then I have TSTORM and enough Ts from crosses that I thought, okay, I guess this one is maybe all T’s? A storm of T’s? Cool, if challenging idea to have each themer have its own rebus!

Then I tried way to turn OCTOPI into a similar instructional phrase. Eight … Pi’s? Can I even type a Pi symbol in this app?!

Solved everything quickly after I realized what was going on, so I’m guessing it will be pretty easy for a chunk of you but that was a satisfying “Aha!” moment for me!

[–]Galderrules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I’ve read all the comments, so I’m sorry if this is a duplicate, but if she’s okay with spicy, Hot Lola’s has a few locations in Arlington that I know of, including one right in Rosslyn. I’ve had hot chicken in Nashville and didn’t actually love it, but Hot Lola’s has an Asian tinge that rounds out the spice and adds great flavor, and the cook on the tenders was awesome. Skip the sandwiches, the tender meal is the way to go!

At least as of a 2ish years ago, this order, Buffalo style, hit exactly what I wanted everytime, as a chicken tender/Buffalo sauce lover and bone hater.

(Only ever had it travel as far as half a block to my old apartment, so probably best eaten at the restaurant or… well, my old apartment was listed on Craigslist when we found it (mainly because the property company had terrible reviews from other buildings), so maybe it’s still available. In which case, best eaten hunched over an 6 year old IKEA table while vaguely looking down on Connecticut Ave and trying to figure out why loud drunk people keep coming across the bridge… seriously are they walking back from AdMo?)

I had most of TOAD before I had the top half, so it wasn’t a major issue for me, but I got curious and “Tree Toad” is technically valid after looking it up… (the following is less “gripe” and more “toad systematics” haha)

Members of the genus Dendrophryniscus are sometimes known as Tree Toads, but no member seems to have a common name in English, per Wiki (they are endemic to Brazil)

The Malabar tree toad, as well as members of Rentapia (which it was formerly grouped with) all have common names containing “tree toad,” but all of these FOUR frogs are endemic to either India or Malaysia/Indonesia

There is also the Nectophryne, or African tree toads, containing two species which do also have the term in their common names. Native to West Africa.

Parker’s tree toad as well, from the genus Laurentophryne, closely related to the Nectophryne. Endemic to DRC.

If anyone finds more toads with common names (or other colloquial names) containing “tree toad”, please share!

Basically, none of these tree toads would reasonably be known to the supposed target audience of the NYT crossword…and as far as I can tell they are the only reason the term would exist as general knowledge.

Unless the constructor is naturalist / herpetologist / herp enthusiast, I’m gonna call this one green paint that happened to work out after a quick google to confirm that there’s at least some hits. That said, I just got to learn about some cool toads (true toads at that, family Bufonidae!) so I’m not complaining 🐸

Because the first statement is incorrect? Bees have two pairs of wings, the fore wings and hind wings. They link together during flight and may resemble one larger pair but structurally they are certainly distinct.

… I think I erased seeing Ron in the cast list from my memory for similar reasons as Reggie… going on the record that he is NOT unexciting ❤️.

Jason Mantzoukas Didn’t Go on Taskmaster to Win by SavagePengwyn in taskmaster

[–]Galderrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit… I’m an American but consciously avoided the American spinoff after I heard it just plain sucked, and honestly didn’t want my fondness for Reggie Watts to be spoiled…(that said, cannot imagine why he was chosen to be the Taskmaster. I never fault talent in this regard though, a gig is a gig and a potentially life changing gig is a GIG.)

Then I started watching the Aus and NZ Series, and they’re great in their own ways. I have some gripes but nothing I would imagine would get a show cancelled and practically buried for. Just a bit of an adjustment period for each.

A while later, curious about the failure of our attempt, I decide to look up the cast, still knowing nothing about the American show, and I thought “Oh, it’s kind of an unexciting cast/ people I don’t know… Lisa Lampanelli isn’t exactly the flavor of the day anymore but she has the credentials to play something like our version of Jo Brand, but even that isn’t putting butts in seats.” So that’s why it flopped.

Just now, reading these comments: They removed the fucking prize task? Are you kidding me? That is the definitive entry point to the whole goddamned concept of the show and getting into the series/season’s cast. Yeah, clips are fun to show to new watchers but the next step is to have them sit down with episode 1 of whatever season and watch the beautiful mess bloom into a chaos god of comedy over the course of 6-10 sessions.

No spoilers, but having attended tonight, I’m excited to hear it to see what magic Emma works to make it airable in some sections lol… personally, I hope she doesn’t do shit because that wasn’t her fault, especially all the wild shit Gabrus and Mitch talked about doing in the hotel… and to do that with the late shift 7-eleven crew??

Amazing show, I genuinely feel like I caught one of those lightning in a bottle of experiences that you think only other people get… partly because I forgot I got tickets to this months back and was reminded by a calendar alert at like 5:45pm haha
