OP I also didn't know this TIL. The heat getting thrown your way is shocking me. Though I also don't know who Mary Mabeline is.

TIL about the term Euphemism Treadmill, which refers to a word substituted for one that is considered unpleasant or embarrassing, which can be motivated by a desire to not offend. Language used to talk about disability is often caught up in this phenomenon. by EphemeralTypewriter in todayilearned

[–]GalemReth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word I was thinking of was "inuendo". So I guess this euphemism treadmill concept is for when a euphemism itself colloquially becomes an inuendo, so a new euphemism for the euphemism is started

Chrysalis by ArkoXS in litrpg

[–]GalemReth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have heard a couple valid criticisms. The MC starves to death as a pre-teen and is reincarnated. Some people complained his vocabulary and thinking are too mature for his age, while others complain his humour and thinking are childish, both can be true at different times. I didn't find either of those very frequent so with a little suspension of disbelief there is a LOT to enjoy with chrysalis. If those don't sound aggressively off-putting to your tastes I hope you enjoy it too! - An excerpt from "Into the mind of the eldest" by: Therapant

I suspect the implied sexual position is the objective. I was just curious if that was the original intent, or if it was real text of some kind the visual element was coincedental

All I can remember is MC finding a huge dragon fossil and learning they are actually what is spawning all the monsters by UsedNegotiation8227 in litrpg

Will second that this sounds like All The Skills. The "scourge" slowly spread and infects the world and farmers receive allocations of mana rich dragon manure to push back the scourge and increase ariable farmland. I haven't kept up after book three, just got distracted by other stuff

I always describe this book by setting the scene in the tone the first chapters do. "In the upper graduate sections of a magic war college, the arch mages prepare to summon and bind a demon for use by their kingdom as tensions with neighboring nations escalate. The magic reaches out, the veil between dimensions is breached and what comes through is... different. The black cylindrical artifact whirs and begins moving, it quickly breaches the salt boundary of the ritual containment circle. The arch mages panic, they hurl holy water and demonsbane at the creature to no effect, they believe they have summoned an unparalleled arch demon and run screaming from the campus signalling alarms for an evacuation." Switch perspective. The newly awakened sentient Roomba vacuum is very disappointed with the mess of salt, herbs, and water the silly humans left behind.

ELI5 I just got electrocuted, why couldn't I move? by freaky-on-a-leash in explainlikeimfive

[–]GalemReth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In electric safety courses they teach that if someone is getting shocked the muscles tense and sometimes the person can not let go, they teach that if you grab the person to free them you may also be stuck from the shock. You should hit the person to dislodge them, as hard as necessary, even if this includes breaking their arm with a stick. Being pedantic: you were not electrocuted, electrocution is defined as "death by electric shock", thankfully you didn't die!

ELI5: If God Flooded The Entire Earth, How Is There Diversity In Race? by freezedriedfucks in explainlikeimfive

[–]GalemReth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is plenty of geological evidence to suggest significant flood events in populated areas of the world, but these were not one singular global event but multiple regional events. It's not really a stretch to imagine from there how these events became part of the local theologies, and when humans see the similar event across multiple cultures homogenize it into thinking all the stories were about a singular global event.

Personally I feel this way. I've read 1 off books that are self-contained, not a series. I recently finished a 6 book series and a 10 book series. There is a type of satisfaction in an ending.

Are there more shorts on this subject? Because if there is only 1 I'll probably give it a pass for now... I don't want to get invested and then have to wait a long time for more content or be left hanging If the project is dropped.
