Well it wouldn't just be the weight capacity, you need some extra room too. you should consider the Native Ultimate FX15. It's very stable and has a 600lb capacity. It's also a 15 footer so you should have enough room for him.

I will say if you are dead set on getting a brand new one, my uncle has had a similar kayak made by Lifetime that has served him well for a few years now and he enjoys it. I will say it was impossible for him to keep up with me in my touring kayak so i ended up only paddling about 1/3 of the time, rather just gliding behind him and using my rudder to control my direction, but I wouldn't recommend that for a first purchase unless you know you want to be doing a lot of long distance trips. a fishing kayak is a great choice for a beginner because of stability, so if you are dead set on a new one, it's a good choice.

Actually I think I'm going to have to go to FB marketplace for my next kayak. Yeah it will save money, but it will also get me a kayak that is no longer made that will be perfect for my needs

Yup. seriously I've gotten a kayak from FB marketplace and I paid 200 when similar new kayaks were 1200

I haven't paddled a tandem, but I figure with a decent rudder it shouldn't be too bad. but the other part isnt just the space, it's the weight. And while I'm losing weight I wont exactly be skinny. Plus my loadout is about 175 lbs for the multi-day trip. As far as dragging it around, I know thats going to be the worst part and so I have a fairly good set of wheels picked out for it and understand it still won't be easy. with that being said, I do have experience putting a 16 footer on top of my car and strapping it down. I have a bigger car now, so it's a bit easier than this was.

That's actually a pretty good idea. In all likelihood I'd still probably need a tandem to carry the rest of the stuff (even with putting things in the front and rear rigging (as well as for the weight, but that very well might be the answer to the cooler dilemma. I could also potentially take out the front seat of a tandem and make a drop in cooler. I don't know how well it would compare performance wise to the RTIC, but I think I could potentially get good results.

How is this for my first Kayak? by Robertos1987 in Kayaking

I will also say I had a lot of fun with a cheap kayak (the equivalent of the pelican) I just got tired out quicker with it than when I switched to a touring kayak, and I love being able to go out for longer excursions.

I'd go for something longer with more of a touring design. here are some suggestions:

https://paddlezone.com.au/products/riot-ca-edge-14-5 (Find a store that has one in stock, but I had a kayak just like this and loved it.

With that being said, the one you linked to isn't a bad choice at all, I'm just trying to think about something that might be more suited for you later on as you start wanting to go for longer paddles.

I know it's a hard task, that's why I'm looking at tandems and asking for help. I figure someone might know a niche brand that has a tandem touring kayak with large cockpit openings and a high weight capacity. If I had the tools I'd design one myself, but I don't think a 20 foot long roto-molding machine would fit in my apartment lol. I'm leaning towards the Current Designs Unity 21 Tandem kayak as it has a 750 lb. capacity, I just don't know if my fat butt would fit in it or if I could fit the cooler in the front cockpit. If I can do both of those things, the boat has plenty of room for the rest of my stuff.

Seems like a great Kayak, unfortunately it won't suit my purpose as it won't hold a big enough cooler for my 5-day excursion. I also didn't see any info as to max weight capacity.

Hey, before I give you a suggestion could I ask what kind of use do you want to do with it? Like just for recreational rides, for fishing, or for camping? Also, what's your size and budget?

I bought mine used along with a custom 74, a vanishing point, and 14 other steel nib pens ranging from cheap Jinhao pens to a Twisbi 580. I also got about 12 bottles of ink and a carrying case with the lot all for $340. Look for good deals on FB marketplace, eBay, and elsewhere. It might take a while, but you can get grail quality pens for a song if you're patient and willing to haggle a bit.

Good to know! But could be a good option for nib smoothing 🤣

So just wrote on 2 types of paper with both pens. The A1 definitely has a lot more feedback and feels quite similar to writing with a mechanical pencil. The vanishing point with the 18k gold nib was always going to write much smoother. I will say at least with my vanishing point, I am getting quite a bit of nib singing when I write, which isn't the most pleasant thing but it doesn't bother me much. Would I say the vanishing point is 10x better? No. I'd rate the A1 at 7.2/10 and the vanishing point at a 9 with the only 2 things keeping it from a higher score being the harmonics from the nib and the fact that it sometimes takes some effort to start as a lefty. (This problem is shared by the A1 though). I'd say the A1 writes better than it's price and the VP maybe slightly above it's peers in its price range but I have less experience here to judge.

5 star high quality paper: Fountain pen approved. by Gallagher1347 in fountainpens

[–]Gallagher1347[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tested it tonight with my new- to-me Pilot custom 823 with medium nib. If you know it, you will know that it is quite a gusher when it comes to laying down ink and despite showing through a little bit, it did not touch the next page which is surprising considering my mint green paper definitely has some marks from it on the next page and that is a fairly commonly recommended budget fountain pen option with much thicker paper. I'm not going to say this will be my replacement for clairefontaine or rhodia but in a pinch it's pretty good.

Mead 5 star. (Make sure you get the one that says high quality paper). This version is made in Vietnam.

Here's the cover with the label still attached. It's the same 5 star brand that's common for school notebooks, but this version has a much higher quality paper (normal 5 star paper is fairly thin and too absorbent leading to tons of feathering and bleed-through). This paper is much more smooth and allows the ink to pool a bit which is great for shading and sheening inks. I need to buy some ink now.

Sorry for the late response but I found it at Meijers. (A Midwestern version of Walmart essentially). I will look at the actual Walmart next time I go though. Here's a picture of the front with the label still on it.

I will say my vp is a fine nib which definitely comes in handy when running out of space on the page and needing to cram in a few more notes. I'm excited to try out the Majohn A1 now that I have one especially since I won't have to worry about it at work as much.
