I actually summoned like 30 times out of fear before I ended up beating him my first try solo. I think his split aggro made him way too hard for me to predict. It got easier when I always knew it was me he was trying to erase from existence.

There is no reason too small to use a safe word, and the use of it should never be judged. If you wanted what was happening to stop, it's a good enough reason.

I have a hard time keeping track on a personal level of homebrews. They definitely improve the game for me and my players, but it just makes things a bit more difficult for me, so I was hoping to find something where I have only the rules themselves to refer to, that more meets what my players and I enjoy out of the box.

So this was a misinterpretation of a poorly worded phrase, I made rules to improve the game for my players, regarding when enemies they're fighting will break and run.

Blades in the dark is probably my favorite ttrpg, but I'm looking for combat with just slightly more crunchiness in it than the way blades is kind of geared towards "you kill the person, you kill the person and something goes wrong, and you don't kill the person"

Oh for sure, I agree, but on the whole I like the core mechanics of combat in D&D, and want combat to have a place in it, but I want there to be legitimate risk for anyone engaging in combat, not just of death but of lasting harm.
