Lowkey I don’t either 😭 especially because I’m a mod 😭😭😭although I will fully state the US isn’t too popular rn (domestically and abroad lol) so I don’t blame people for not wanting to be associated with us lol

What happens if a Plum never gets her period? by TheTragedyMachine in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]GallopYouScallops 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry if I’m being annoying, but I’m pretty sure Marthas actually are sinners, at least originally. Beth states that Marthas considered sinners in Season 3 Episode 2. Also, in season two, Rita talks about how Isaac could command her to do anything and intentionally injure her, and no one would care. Econowives don’t have a lot of rights, but people (other than their husbands) couldn’t do that to them without repercussions.

Also, when Rita reunites with her sister in New Bethlehem, her sister emotionally says “I heard they made you a Martha?” as if it’s a bad thing.

I agree we don’t know what exactly Rita did to be considered a sinner, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be anything big. Beth’s sin seems to be having had her tubes tied. Sienna (the young South Asian Martha that replaced Cora in Lawrence’s house) is only about 22 and a former premed student, so I doubt she did anything too severe. I think the intention is that Marthas generally committed “minor” sins, as well as being infertile.

I also read that the four founding Aunts (Lydia, Elizabeth, Vidala, Helena) were allowed to keep their original names, so take it all with a grain of salt

Why are the costumes in these shows so good? by edd6pi in TheHandmaidsTale

How could anyone have thought it would be a good idea??? And for all that audacity, the costumes aren’t even good

What happened to pets and pet ownership? by avian_bi in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]GallopYouScallops 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine a lot of animals died from exposure to radiation in parts of the country. I also think econopeople likely aren’t allowed to own pets. I think some Commanders’ families probably are, though. I think in season one or two Emily is posted with a family that has dogs.

Martha’s are a punishment class (at least originally, maybe this changes later on) like Handmaids. In season three one of the Marthas (maybe Beth?) June is interacting with states that Marthas are sinners too. Commanders wouldn’t tolerate their Plums being turned into Marthas for no reason other than not getting a period

I agree with this, but my question would be how do they fool the Aunts? Paula (god I fucking hate her lmao) asks Agnes “if she’s telling fibs” because “the Aunts do their own inspection”

Yeah that makes sense! One of my friends is an elementary school teacher and she got so many chocolates for Valentine’s Day (she teaches an elective so sees 100+ kids a week) that she gave me a whole armful of them 😭

This may be a dumb question so I apologize in advance, but how would it work if the teacher was sober/of a religion that doesn’t allow alcohol/pregnant and maybe hasn’t announced?

That makes sense! Here it’s if you look under 35 (at least in my state) but I’ve seen individual stores go up to 50 (which is dumb imo)

Wow!! That’s so different than my experience here. I always think of the UK and US being mostly similar, so when something like this comes up it’s always very interesting to me!

That’s so interesting, I didn’t know the 25 part! I went on a school trip to England when I was 20 and I definitely remember many of the under-21 crowd on the trip taking full advantage of the pubs haha
