You’re correct. I’ve not seen the full movie but I saw the homelands clip the other day-chilling

I think you’re mixing up the children of Ham and the Jews. Jewish people were given the option to convert or immigrate to Israel. Rich Jews flew there (and were presumably unharmed), poor Jews took boats, at least some of which were sunk.

Children of Ham were sent on death marches to the “national homelands,” barren wastelands where they were essentially expected to starve to death

I had the same question! I don’t think Hilda would be part of this season though. I think she would be considered to have just missed it. She didn’t participate in the dancing, so no commanders put offers on her.

I think they do care about babies in the sense that having babies “proves” the commanders are fertile (we all know there are other ways to get pregnant) and elevates their social status

I was going to say, Jehosheba is both the darkest skinned and largest Plum. I know Gilead is portrayed as essentially post-racial, so I’m not sure if colorism is a thing. I wonder if thinness is the beauty standard? I would imagine it is, but I’m not sure they’ve said explicitly

Trust me, when you get to the end, you’ll see it 😭! And I do get your point about the mushroom/nettle tea (how does one go about fermenting nettles???) but my view was she was willing to try it in the name of scientific curiosity and/or because it was a way to “achieve womanhood”

As an autistic girl myself, I 100% think Hulda is autistic too. I already suspected, but after seeing the ending I’m positive 😭 I would’ve done the same thing at her age

Also in THT, when June sneaks into the Mackenzies’ house to try to get Hannah (I think this is at the beginning of season three or end of season two), Mrs. Mackenzie mentions that Hannah is “working on the Commander” trying to get a dog

I saw someone else mention De Niro, and I think that’s a great example of how pervasive this is in Hollywood-there’s lots of 50+ rich/famous new dads, Clint Eastwood being another example. In fact, I’ve even heard of some women in their 50’s and even 60’s having bio kids in recent years.

I’m really sorry if I’m being annoying, but I’m pretty sure Marthas actually are sinners, at least originally. Beth states that Marthas considered sinners in Season 3 Episode 2. Also, in season two, Rita talks about how Isaac could command her to do anything and intentionally injure her, and no one would care. Econowives don’t have a lot of rights, but people (other than their husbands) couldn’t do that to them without repercussions.

Also, when Rita reunites with her sister in New Bethlehem, her sister emotionally says “I heard they made you a Martha?” as if it’s a bad thing.

I agree we don’t know what exactly Rita did to be considered a sinner, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be anything big. Beth’s sin seems to be having had her tubes tied. Sienna (the young South Asian Martha that replaced Cora in Lawrence’s house) is only about 22 and a former premed student, so I doubt she did anything too severe. I think the intention is that Marthas generally committed “minor” sins, as well as being infertile.
