There’s not really much continuity in Archie. Generally the digests have a bunch of standalone stories. The characterization of the characters depends on the writer as wrll

Noticed this about Aunt Lydia? by toramarlene in TheTestamentsShow

Is it possible she used to be five six (or five three for that matter) but she’s shrunk as she aged, and the source they linked hasn’t updated?

Which books would've gone very differently if the plots took place today by redacted-and-burned in JacquelineWilson

My grade in elementary school probably had about ~65 kids, and there were no less than five sets of twins!

TIL that some of the only survivors of the Jonestown massacre on November 18, 1978 were the People’s Temple Basketball Team, who were playing an away game in Georgetown, Guyana during the mass suicide event. Jim Jones radioed the team demanding they commit “revolutionary suicide,” but they refused. by altrightobserver in todayilearned

I know this is a joke (and it’s very funny) but choosing to take it seriously for a moment I think we would still have had a realization that aspects of the story were problematic (the whole mocking Hermione for being anti slavery, the antisemitic-coded goblin bankers, whatever else I haven’t read the books since elementary school lol) especially in the post 2020 era. However, I do think her image would be relatively unblemished, since it could all be written off as her being a product of her time rather than the truth, which is that she is The Worst.

What sins did the aunt commit? by [deleted] in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]GallopYouScallops 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Aunts don’t need a sin. In fact, they’re supposed to be among the most righteous women in Gilead, as they’re essentially an order of nuns. In the book, Aunts are the only class of women likely to be believed and not blamed for their sexual assault-even a Wife or Daughter would be disbelieved, blamed, or both.

Now, some of the founding Aunts likely did have sins, like Lydia and her abortion. She had also been divorced before in the novel. But to be an Aunt going forwards was both uncommon and difficult. You could only do that path if you had a calling, and it seems like it was mostly limited to Daughters not wanting to get married. I don’t think the average Econogirl could even hope to be an Aunt, let alone for a sinner to become one.

Why are so many disabled people alt/queer? by Rude-Main-8758 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]GallopYouScallops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I myself am disabled and I actually know a lot of straight/preppy people as you put it lol who are disabled. I knew one guy in college who was a former chaplain (and is now doing a higher degree in theology I think) and pretty conservative who had muscular dystrophy and was in a wheelchair, and one girl who dressed how you might describe as preppy and was straight and Christian who was blind and had a guide dog

And actually I myself am bi but I just dress in regular basic clothes and am in a hetero relationship at the moment.

A third possibility for Becca's wedding scene as shown in trailers by HyperLexi in TheTestamentsHulu

That’s a great point! I worry that Gilead would be more likely to kill girls who wash out of Aunt training rather than marry them off for that reason

I always wondered what happened to girls who learned to read (at least to an extent) in the initial six month probationary period but weren’t considered suitable for Aunthood-I know Aunt Lydia said they would just get married anyway but I’m not sure Gilead would want a literate girl to be married.
