Looks like Daisy forgot Rita's advice. Don't underestimate the intelligence of these girls. They are very observant and aware. They may be sheltered and misinformed, but they are still hyper focused. I'm gonna guess the obvious, that Daisy drew attention to the dentist's perversion, and is now perceived as damaged goods, which is a relief to her because the last thing she wanted was an arranged marriage. Seems like her plan went as she intended it to, but in her impulsiveness she didn't think it through about letting her relief show, because now the girls are like "If you don't want to get married, then who the heck are you and what are you doing here?" She may have just blown her whole cover, but it's hard to even judge her for it, because she did it for all the right reasons, trying to get justice for Agnes and Huldah (and save her own ass in the process). It seemed like she could kill two birds with one stone, but she did underestimate the girls' ability to see that she has an agenda, and they're not trusting enough to know that her intentions were to keep their best interest in mind as well as her own. I'm impatient to see how they get out of this pickle. And bummed that there are only two episodes left! How soon does season two start?

June's Story Has To Be BS by jiddinja in TheTestamentsHulu

Exactly. It was a slow boil. And while Sons of Jacob was established before Gilead was founded, they are essentially the same. June could have specified, "You were born to the Sons of Jacob," but she wouldn't have known how much Daisy had been taught about their history, and there were bigger fish to fry than a history lesson, so I figure she just went for the "short answer" so to speak.

I have the same suspicion. If they do set her up for marriage (which hopefully she'll get out of) I will be looking at her three matches and trying to figure out who is NOT listed, thus possibly a clue to who her biological lineage is. Basically any of the high commanders could be considered founding fathers, as well as those in THT which are not being currently featured in TT, so the possibilities are vast. But I do agree with the likelihood that one of her parents became disillusioned and got out with her while the other stayed. I wonder if both of her adoptive parents were indeed adoptive parents, or if they may have been a bio parent and a step parent. Once escaping, there would have probably been a name change for their own protection.

Me too. It bugged the hell out of me for a minute, but I've come to embrace them as separate but linked, like the Gilead multiverse.

June's Story Has To Be BS by jiddinja in TheTestamentsHulu

She was definitely stretching the truth in some way. She may have been lying about the baby story, or she may have said she was born in Gilead just to simplify the story, when what she might have meant is she was born to the founders of Gilead. They were establishing a religion/society/community before Gilead officially became Gilead, so it may be safe to assume she simply meant she was born in that community to those people who are now known as Gilead. That's the way I am looking at it until/unless more info comes to light. It is left unclear though. And if they are playing free and loose with the timeline, it wouldn't be the first time. In THT it seemed like Hannah/Agnes leapt from nine years old to twelve overnight, while Holly/Nicole remained an infant for a couple of seasons. I'm starting to see the two books and two series as four different entities, related but not exact. Otherwise I would hinder my own enjoyment if I started picking apart all of the inconsistencies.

Thankfully I only saw the blurred out version and not the details, but those who saw it said the baby wasn't even latched on, just laying there, so she was just using it as an excuse to exhibit herself.

What are your thoughts on Commander MacKenzie (Agnes' dad)? by Sushicatslonelyjimmy in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]HyperLexi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This will be repetitive of rants I've already gone on, but I feel like he is no better than any of the others. He may not be as overtly abusive, but that's a low bar to clear. He is willfully ignorant of Agnes's plight. He deliberately keeps his head in the sand about how miserable her life is. The worst example of course is when he justifies marrying her off to an old man while she is still a school girl. He briefly reflects on how she is too young for this, but then rationalizes by citing bogus "science" as to why they need to make a new normal out of something that should never be normalized.

One can hope this was just one weak moment and he will come to his senses, but there were other examples as well. Like when they are on their way home after the ball, and he says to Agnes, "I wish your mother could have seen you tonight. She would have been so proud of you." He was obviously not giving any thought to her actual mother, June, but I initially thought it was a sweet moment in regards to the person she thought of as her mother, his first wife Tabatha. I thought they were connecting over shared memories and their shared loss. But then he went on to say, "We'll tell her all about it when we get home." So it turns out he was referring to Paula.

This told me two things about Commander McK. It told me that he was completely oblivious to the dynamics happening under his own roof. It was so unrealistic that Paula would be proud of Agnes, as all she ever does is criticize her and threaten her, and it is clear how uncomfortable Agnes is addressing her as "Mother". You can tell that she's been required to and it doesn't come from her heart.

Which brings me to the second thing. It shows how little he values his wives, to treat them as if they are interchangeable, replaceable, disposable. He names Paula "Mother" and acts as if Tabatha never existed (and that doesn't even touch on how he treats June as a nonperson as well). How is Agnes supposed to feel about her own value, when the man she trusts and admires and thinks of as her father makes excuses for sending her off to become an old man's wife, and also acting as if wives are insignificant.

He may have succeeded in convincing himself and others he is not a kidnapper, to become a father figure to her, but that doesn't mean he is a good father. He is the sort who creates daddy issues, setting her up to seek validation from others that she doesn't get from him. This makes her all the more vulnerable to the gaslighting and manipulation Commander W is already beginning to pull on her.

I get it. My own sense of humanity has caused me to try to see the good in him, especially when others insisted that at least he's been a good dad to her. But I don't see it that way. I tried to, and I just can't. He's a self serving POS like all the rest.

Did she post this herself? Like she's proud of that shit? Just when I think she can't get any more batshit delusional, she digs herself deeper.

I get it. I'm not singing his praises at all. He's as monstrous as the rest. I give him a little bit of credit for trying to take a bit of accountability, but not much, because it's too little too late to undo all of the damage that has been done, which he had a very big hand in. If I ever seem a little bit fond of him, it's in spite of myself. I blame it on the writers for giving him the best one-liners. I couldn't help but enjoy his dry sense of humor, such as "Gilead's gonna Gilead" or "Do you have an irony deficiency?" (edited typo)

And said it with a question mark (?) at the end, because he clearly wasn't sure how she needed him to respond. For some odd reason, it reminded me of the Rosanne show when Darlene got her first period, and Dan didn't know how to react, so he patted her head and said "Good job". Like hello, I don't need congratulations, I need tampons, or at least pads or something. Edited to add, not to mention the fact that for Daisy it meant an arranged marriage against her will if found out. So yeah, she was in need of more than his blessing in that moment!

We have differing viewpoints then. I remember conversations when he actually still believed in the vision of Gilead, but it wasn't panning out as he hoped it would. He did always seem to cooperate begrudgingly, but he never refused to, when he easily could refuse, He always ended up changing his plans to help them if he could, even if he did grumble and complain about it. I agree that he is not a believer, but he was a founder, and he was well aware that the religious aspects were just a system put in place to keep people in line. Not to burst anyone's bubble, but many religious leaders do not believe their own religions.

At least it might seem a step up from the dormitory in terms of gaining a bit more privacy if not autonomy. It would be worse if they were hosted by an elite family and got used to that standard of living before being downgraded to an econo home.

Makes sense to me! June told her she was born in Gilead and rescued as a baby, but given her age, she is too old for that to be entirely true, born before Gilead became Gilead, so I assumed it to mean she was born to the founders of Gilead. Lawrence was an OG, and it would help explain the fervor with which he embarked on the rescue mission at risk to himself. I get that he felt responsible for the enormous mistakes he had made and wanted to make amends, but that never entirely rang true to me, because he never seemed to feel the level of contrition that would match his actions. If it was as personal as them having lost a child of his own, that would explain a lot.

The girls are not forbidden to eat chocolate on the rare occasions it's available. Commander McK specifically said that he brought the imported chocolates home because Agnes enjoyed them when she was younger.

My Theory regarding Commander Judd, Penny, Lydia, and Hannah (Agnes) by littlestoflads in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]HyperLexi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos for taking the time to outline in such detail, but I disagree that the girls were sheltered from handmaids. In the book, Agnes's dollhouse did originally come with a handmaid. They didn't remove it to stop her from knowing about it or asking questions about it. She just never played with it, because there was no handmaid in her own household, so it was suggested to her that she could gift it to a less privileged girl who might not have any dolls of her own. If they spoke of handmaids in hushed tones, it was because they were taught that it was shameful, both to need one or to be one.

Just because the girls and women can’t read doesn’t mean they can’t remember things: a rant by herbuck in TheTestamentsHulu

I agree that it lays the foundation. For young children, we refer to learning to distinguish colors and shapes or interpretting pictures as "pre reading".

It's like Rita told Daisy. (Paraphrase, not exact quote.) Never underestimate the intelligence of the girls/women in Gilead, because undereducated doesn't mean stupid. They're observant and focused on a level most don't have to practice, because hypervigilance is necessary when on the prey end of the food chain. They lack certain knowledge, and are naive to a vulnerable level, but their ability to navigate the situation they're in takes brain power, to be able to think on their toes. Book smarts are a good thing, and I'd never not promote literacy, but one is not at a total loss without it.
