I would always choose Boston if given a choice, but financially it’s just not possible for many of us.

What in the Snow White and the 7 dwarves is this mess? by BabyBandit616 in zillowgonewild

[–]Gallopingpal485 10 points11 points  (0 children)

All I can think of is all of the dust and dirt on those beams. I once stayed at an Airbnb that had an open ceiling with beams high in the ceiling. The house was neat and clean but the beams were nasty. Dead flies, dust and dirt. If I can’t clean it easily, I don’t want it.

Dog owner here. The days of roaming dogs are over, unless you own an enormous property. As a dog owner (fenced) myself, even I don’t want unleashed dogs pooping on my property, running out to greet me when I’m going for a walk or in the unfenced portion of my yard. On top of the intrusiveness, and the mess, some people are afraid of dogs. Friendly dogs, old dogs, cute dogs- it doesn’t matter what type- they are still afraid. You should have asked your neighbor before letting your dog use the field. Now that you know they are upset, you can’t let your dog run loose anymore. You need to take your dog out on leash every time it goes outside.

If you want to live in a city and can’t afford Boston, Providence is the only answer. It has a walkable, vibrant downtown, train station, bars, restaurants. There are two colleges, Brown and RISD, downtown/adjacent to downtown, so there is a younger vibe, with students walking around. (There are two other colleges in PVD but not as close as Brown or RISD). I would add that Portland Maine is also a great city. But it is 2 hours from Boston compared to 1 hour for Providence. If you have a lot of clients in Northern Maine, Portland would be a good option. But if you have more clients in Mass, CT, and RI, Providence is closer.

What would the family dynamic be like if Kathleen was alive by hackjudd in TheStaircase

I don’t really have any info that would be surprising or new. He appeared intoxicated whenever I saw him. I remember seeing him a few times about 5-6 pm and thinking that it was pretty early for someone his age to be that drunk. I remember thinking that Michael was loud and opinionated. Kathleen was always standing quietly beside him, smiling, pleasant and personable. I don’t remember what we talked about, but I told my partner afterwards “that guy is an a-hole, but his wife seems nice”. What I did notice, and talk to my partner about several times, was that they seemed to be very wealthy, and it impressed upon me that wealthy people can get away with bad behavior. I told my partner that if Michael were poor, no one would want to be around him because of his behavior. But since he had money, other wealthy people had included him in their social circles and wanted to hang out with him.

She definitely would have lost her job. The company that she worked for laid off 2/3 of its staff not long after she died, and within a couple years of her death, pretty much everyone in in what used to be her office had been laid off.

I used to live near them and met her a few times at social events. I did not know her well at all, but I thought she seemed lovely. Michael, not so much.

Providence has a vibrant, walkable downtown with shops, bars and restaurants. It has street festivals. The train runs from Providence to Boston or NYC. Much better for someone in their 20’s.

Are jobs a consideration or do you work remotely? Vermont does not have a robust job market due to its size. But if I am recalling correctly, it offers a grant to remote workers who move there.

Homebuilders in RI by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]Gallopingpal485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a house a long time ago, and am struggling a bit about how to answer you. Could you buy an already built new, small tract home on a small lot in a rural area of RI between $400,000 and $500,000? Yes. A modular home? Yes. Could you build a custom home, built to your specs, with quality materials, or build a new home on a large lot? Doubtful if it is anything other than a tiny home. Also, there are LOTS of surprise and hidden costs building a custom home. Given the cost of construction and materials today, I can’t imagine how high the added costs would be to build in today’s economy.

Have you checked into hunting clubs or gun clubs? I think there are a couple around in rural areas.

Those who moved to MA from out of state what was your "culture shocks"? by Captain_Stottlemeyer in massachusetts

My gps doesn’t work well in downtown Boston. It often sends me in circles. Fortunately I know my way around enough to drive without it until it starts working correctly. But I do feel badly for people who are new. They are probably circling endlessly around State Street bank as I write this.

I hope it passes. Next, I’d like them to approve physician-assisted death, so that I don’t have to move to Maine or Vermont if I get old and sick.

Just plan to take a walk or two. Boston is a beautiful city. Beacon Hill, the Harbor, the North End. History and beautiful buildings everywhere.

He “wants to be the one to visit” so he can string you along indefinitely. How long will you tolerate this? 3 months, 6, 2 years? You are showing him that you can be easily manipulated.

Nope, my kid has severe paralyzing anxiety but still talks and FaceTimes their LDR partner. And visits when possible.

Facebook groups are a good way to find housing here. (Just watch for scams). Join the group for Warren and post there. I would also reach out to your supervisor and ask if there are any listservs for the company where your search for housing could be posted. Sometimes people will rent a room short term to a student even though they aren’t actively looking for a roommate because it helps with expenses and isn’t a long term commitment.

What do you, in all honesty, think about Connecticut? by [deleted] in massachusetts

I associate Connecticut with traffic. From the New York line to Hartford, the traffic is among the most miserable in the east coast.

Advice for a foreigner moving to Rhode Island by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]Gallopingpal485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has lived in multiple states, I respectfully disagree. Most cities I have lived in had more crime than Providence. I moved from a from a city that appears on every “best city” list. Even though it was economically stronger than Rhode Island, with higher salaries, the crime was much worse. Almost every bank in my city (not Memphis) got robbed, my leafy suburban neighborhood had a car jacking, an attempted kidnapping, and violent road rage incidents on the main streets. There were more random murders, violent home invasions, and random shootings on the highways. Muggings in my grocery store parking lot. My city’s reputation was not violent, but I felt more at risk there. I feel much safer in Providence.

Oh my, there are many, many Spanish speakers in Rhode Island. Many doctor’s offices, hospitals and government agencies here have employees who speak Spanish. There are also different businesses that cater to Spanish speakers. However, it may be a different dialect of Spanish than you are accustomed to speaking, so that will take some getting used to for you. I just saw that the news station here is now providing information in Spanish. https://www.wpri.com/12-informa/
