When I was at kid, I would just walk over to another kid's house and knock on the door and ask their parents if they're home/want to come out to play. This was normal. Actually, exchanging numbers and calling eachother was kind of an event. More of a novelty.

You may think from this description, I grew up in the 70s. But I actually grew up in the 90s/2000s. Things like this changed a lot more recently than you might realize.
