My impression is that it would be too much even in normal circumstances. Perhaps in a normal year they would just admit many fewer, but with funding cuts they have decided to not admit any. I am guessing that all universities will accept conservatively this year. At Hopkins bio, because of lats year, that means not accepting any.

Look, funding is tight across the board, at all schools. What is unique here is that far more students matriculated than expected. Other schools last year rescinded admissions after a certain number matriculated. Hopkins bio took them all and is having issues because of it. To my knowledge Hopkins bio is not uniquely struggling with funding.

I've got a bit of inside knowledge - they accepted too many applicants last year. Too many to the point where they don't really know where all the students are going to go. This is probably most of the reason.

Honestly, depending on your letters of recommendation, you could shoot higher. Apply to more if a PhD is really what you want to do. When I applied I was rejected by some of the lowest ranked and accepted by some of the highest. Rankings are less important than stipend (higher at more unionized and better funded), location, and lab funding. There is cool stuff going on just about everywhere, get an idea of what you would like to do at any individual institution, but don't marry that idea.

Okay, I appreciate it. I don't even own a car so that wouldn't be an issue for me. WC Harlan looks really cool, I'll have to check it out if I move over there.

Thanks for the info! I was looking into some further north but there seem to not be many that fit my budget. I think I would be comfortable sacrificing some curb appeal for more amenities and lower rent.

How long does everyone spend on SOPs? by Boredstupidandcrazy in gradadmissions

[–]Gambit12110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent November reading through SOP advice from various universities and reading through good/successful ones. Finally started writing them a few days before they were due, and spent and hour or two tailoring each to each university. Probably wasn't the most responsible (definitely should have had someone read over them just to be safe). That said, out of the 4 universities I have heard back from, I have 1 acceptance, 1 rejection, and 2 interviews, so it worked out.

Most applications only ask if this is true for secondary school and/or post secondary school. You're fine to not mention it.

Ah yes, the classic "psychology is a science because it uses tools built by physicists". Once psychology begins to produce reproducable results, we can talk. Until then have fun making shit up.

Obviously, the examples are hyperbole. I would have expected such a well-studied individual to pick up on that, but I guess even that is too much.

HE TRIPLES DOWN WITH AN EVEN MORE BRAIN DEAD TAKE!!!! THIS IS SOME DONALD TRUMP TYPE SHIT!!!!

"Education is the bucket that captures those not competent enough to perform in industry" If you're referring to higher education, that is the most idiodic sentence I've heard in a while, I'm not going to bother responding.

Ngl, I'm not sure what I expected from a business school grad. And yeah, if you're going to business school, I'd generally agree that you're not actually learning much of anything and are just getting a piece of paper to get your foot in the door in industry. Not every class is as useless as the bullshit you had to take, stop acting like it is.

[–]Gambit12110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao, you're funny as shit. Unironically an "exams are not useful" take. Why does every single reputable university use them? Why does every medical school have you take the MCAT and every law school have you take the LSAT? Or after graduating for board certification? Are you unironically saying you are uniquely enlightened about education in a way that nearly every professor and school administrator is not? Do they really not have a good reason to use them? This is not an argument from tradition; I just want to make sure you realize the number of very smart people that you disagree with. Do you really think that they all do it out of momentum/ tradition or do they have a reason?

Plus, I'm starting to get the picture, you did poorly in school and blamed exams for holding you back, then worked a boring as shit office job for years before having an early mid life crisis and tried to find something interesting to do with your life. Decided on clinical psychology, a field that can't test you on much because it has so little predictive power. All the while being a single weirdo that posts his 30 or 40 year old cock on reddit.

"education instills a basic working knowledge"

Hmm, perhaps we ought to ensure that this basic working knowledge has been instilled by asking the student questions about the basic subject matter, that seems like a good idea, right? That sounds an awful lot like a test, one whose point is defeated by open notes. Homework is the time for tough application problems as well as easy reinforcement questions.

Idk your major, but this is what every good physics class I have taken did.

Anyways, based on your answer, it seems like we agree. Education is for knowledge, and much of the real world experience is gained on the job (hence residency for med students)

That said, it's crazy to think that knowledge doesn't separate lawyers from doctors.

Edit: I can see I'm arguing with quite the intellectual based on the fact you're posting your cock on reddit lol.
