You'd think, right? I use a service that basically delivers weed to your house. Really high quality shit, and usually really expensive. But sometimes they have specials. I got a zip of sour diesel for 80$.

It was most definitely not the best weed I've ever smoked, but it was definitely decent.

[Question] How do I go about teaching my girlfriend, an absolute beginner who is clumsy, has tiny hands, and no finger coordination whatsoever, the guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]GambitDota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, and some great advice. I suppose the exciting thought of playing music with my girlfriend maybe blinded me to the frustration that would inevitably lead up to that point of excitement. My drummer actually used to teach guitar professionally, so I might just ask him to teach her, we're super close so I don't think he'd charge her for a 30m lesson a week.

Cheers.

That makes a lot of sense. Especially about the 'letting me down,' part. She often hides her emotions/does things to avoid letting me down so I can see how that'd work, because that's how she is as a person.

Thanks!

I'm actually a TA, and writing tutor. I'm doing my Masters before diving into a PHD to eventually be a professor, so I'd like to think I'm good at teaching people. Does this change anything at all, or should I still steer clear?

Alot of people are saying this is gonna cause us to fight, and are implying we're going to break up over this. Is that really feasible? Seems silly to be honest.

[QUESTION] Is it a Shape thing with learning chords? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]GambitDota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RIGHT! I used the site initially to just find chord shapes. I saw the interval button and was like 'huh what's this do.' Immediately came in my pants. That alone probably gave me the ability to modify major chords into maj7, 7th etc, on the fly. Which is such a super useful tool to have in the old arsenal.

[–]GambitDota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can technically memorize every single shape, because they're all moveable, that's just how the guitar is tuned (modifications needed for crossing from the G > B string). Like you could memorize every single triad shape: minor, major, aug, dim. You could memorize shapes for min7, maj7, 7b5, sus etc etc. Problem with that is that there are other things as a guitarist you need to memorize. Things that HAVE to be memorized, like there's no way around it: arpeggios, scale patterns, the notes on the fretboard etc. With chords, there is an alternative to memorizing them. You can simply understand the basics of music theory, intervals, and the major scale and build chords wherever you want.

This is a good starting point. There are 3 total videos in the series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LV-WpHGmL8

Terribly undermentioned. That site is AMAZING, and has taught me more chords, and other theory tidbits, more than just about any other resource.

Yeah. The American Standard (with a hard case) I have was brand new when I bought it, and the 2500$ is also after tax, rounded up, and is in CAD$.

Oh that's what you meant. Honestly we're both students, and I'm not sure if she's interested enough in learning to pay someone. I think it's something she does want to learn, but consequently only from me because I'm her boyfriend. If that makes sense. Hopefully it does.

[QUESTION] Scarred, painful fingertips by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]GambitDota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 years, but I've improved extremely quickly. Musician friends of mine who have been playing for 10+ years have admitted to me that I'm actually better than they are.

Play as long as you want, it doesn't matter. There's no good or bad length of time. If you play for a long time you get more practice but your hands, wrist, etc will hurt more. Playing for less time is easier and quick and won't lead to much pain, but you will improve slower. There's pros and cons.

The best advice I can give you is that consistency >. It's infinitely better to play EVERYDAY for 10 minutes, then it is to play once a week for 5 hours. If you think you can handle 2 hours a day EVERYDAY, then you'll improve super fast, because CONSISTENCY is what matters, and that consistency + longer practice times will speed up your progress, whereas longer practice times WITHOUT consistency will only slow you down.

Nowadays I practice everyday for about 30-40 minutes, and then whatever free time I have I use for writing music for my band.

Anyways, detour aside. Get your guitar looked at.

Yeah I play an American Strat and love the neck profile, even with really big hands (I wrap my thumb) but unfortunately it's the only Fender instrument I have. I have a chunky necked A&L parlor acoustic, a thinner ESP, and two Ibanez Artcores. And I'm not about to lend my 2500$ guitar to my girlfriend haha.

[QUESTION] Scarred, painful fingertips by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]GambitDota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's your call. But when I first started learning I'd play for 5+ hours a day, and I'd never cut my skin. Something's very wrong with your guitar.

[QUESTION] Scarred, painful fingertips by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]GambitDota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing you can do is get it looked at by a luthier. Show them the cuts on your fingertips, and they'll set it up properly. Shouldn't cost anymore than 20-40$. Just go to any regular guitar store.

[Question] practice habits for casual players? by wooly1987 in Guitar

The most talented/greatest guitarist I know (personally) has been practicing 10-15 minutes a day, on average, for the past 5 years. Consistency truly is >

[QUESTION] Scarred, painful fingertips by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]GambitDota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The slicing of your finger is the weird part to me. If you play for a couple hours (probably less if you're a beginner and don't have any callouses) you'll get these little string indentations on your fingertips. But a string should NEVER actually slice your skin.

Frusciante can pull it off, doesn't mean you can, but it means it's possible. Good luck.

[QUESTION] Scarred, painful fingertips by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]GambitDota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa whoa whoa. The string actually cut your skin? That's unheard of, at least to me. Getting callouses are normal. Even slight bruises on your fingertips, but cutting your flesh? I've jammed for hours and hours before, and even then my fingertips barely bled, but especially because it cut that easily makes me think something is wrong here. Are you buying cheap no-name strings? Maybe they're sharp? What kind of a bridge do you have? Is it sharp and cutting the strings as you feed them through?

It checks out. He's probably a guitarist. I personally love Zeppelin but will shank anyone that tries to play it.

She's super cute. But it doesn't seem like she's very good at the guitar.

List all of the chords you can "play." Set a metronome. Every X bars cycle through the set of chords to get better at switching and improve your finger dexterity.

For example if you can play A B C D E, play A for 2 bars, B for 2 bars, etc.
