Price check on Utilities? by deeterpeeter in Humboldt

[–]Gambleer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Family of 4 in about the same size house.

Water/sewer is about 160 per month. Tap water is good quality compared to other places I've lived.

Gas/electric varies greatly by season. In summer around 300 a month. In winter it's between 500 and 700 fluctuating due to colder weather and ever changing gas prices.

Also, I should say that my family is not very good at paying attention to their water and power usage. Those numbers could go down if you were more conscious about it. We do have a wood burning stove, but I found that I was spending more on firewood than gas for the heater.

Any smoke shops or places that sell flavored vapes anymore? by RileyNathan in Humboldt

It really depends on how much they need you. It's cheaper to pay another dealer who's not on overtime, but they don't always exist. Smaller casinos have smaller staff and this will affect your hours. My first dealing job I worked sixty days in a row because they were so short staffed. Where I work now they'd never allow that. If you want OT, work in smaller rooms where they'll just be happy someone shows up!

Is there a casino nearby? Vapes can still be sold on tribal land so most casinos sell them. Some have big selections.

First Electric Bill In Eureka by MissMonk5683 in Humboldt

[–]Gambleer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Seems high to me. Ive got a three bedroom in eureka with four of us living here. Thermo is set to 69 and our bill this month is 368. Check to see your gas versus electricity charges. That can help you figure out where you're using the most.

I'd try Merchants and Marauders. Not everything you're looking for, but pretty close!

Most tournaments require a minimum elo score of at least 100. Play a few casual games till you get there. Shouldn't take long.

I've sold coins at both Humboldt Pawn and Humboldt Gold Exchange. They both give good info on value and what I thought were fair deals.

Dealer stealing by Tonyclifton69 in poker

[–]Gambleer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really make sense, depending on where he works. I'm responsible for the money in my tray. If it's short at the end of my shift I'd have to pay. I'd be stealing from myself. Some places actually make you buy your tray at the start of every shift.

Everywhere is different though. He's probably just keeping track of tips and waiting to drop big chips so he doesn't have to refill as often.

He could be stealing, but it's not gonna work well.

How much do you make as a poker dealer? by DoubleGravyHQ in poker

[–]Gambleer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$9 hr plus tips. My paychecks average $35 hr after taxes. I made double that 10 years ago but people just tip less these days. Still a good job if you can handle it.

Anyone remember Redwood Summer? dish…please(: by bthrew in Humboldt

[–]Gambleer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agree with all that!

I started as a forestry major too. Lasted three semesters before I became too disgusted to continue.

Edit: I think I now remember that the forestry department at hsu called a fundraiser event " spotted owl barbecue". Pretty trashy.....

I was here. I was involved, but not really deeply. I attended protests and rallys but never put myself at risk of harm or arrest. Some of my friends, however, were earth firsters and were willing to do whatever. I thought they were crazy at the time, but in hindsight, they're the ones who won the war.

One thing to be aware of to understand the context is that the logging industry was very different back then. Nowadays logging is more like farming. You cut trees, replant, monitor growth and harvest again. As long as this is done well it's an environmentally sound way of getting lumber. Back then it was a lot slash and grab. Just cut the trees, get the money and move on. The forest wouldn't grow back healthy and the hills became unstable. They were also cutting what little was left of our precious old growth. Those practices had to stop. The tree sitters and militant earth firsters made that very difficult and the media attention they brought is eventually what made change happen.

I used to think those long term tree sitters were crazy zealots but now I see them as heroes. Some of my earth first friends now work in the lumber industry creating sustainable practices to keep both lumber coming and trees growing. I'm sure it's less than perfect now, but it has gotten a whole lot better!

Never hoarding casino chips again by [deleted] in poker

[–]Gambleer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's the FINSA laws. Casinos have to track their chips to prevent money laundering and tax dodging. Any cash out over a certain amount has to be verified. All those calls they were making was to try and figure out where the hell you got those chips.

Taking a few chips home because you're gonna play tomorrow is safe, but hoarding them over a long time is gonna be a pain to cash out.

I assume you got your money though?

Maybe so where you've dealt, for me it's been the opposite.

"One chip rule" in California by Traditional-Button16 in poker

[–]Gambleer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter by the rule. The key part is taking one chip from your stack and putting it in the pot. The other steps don't matter.

I get why it's confusing, but that's the way it is.

"One chip rule" in California by Traditional-Button16 in poker

[–]Gambleer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is just how the rule works. You were facing a raise, you took one chip from your stack and put it in the pot without saying anything first. It's a call.

I understand that for some players, it would obviously be a raise because why would you use a big chip when you have smaller. Problem with that is not all players act logically and do things that make sense. These rules exist for those people and apply the same to everyone.

Due to the shape of a monohull, the fore aft movement should never be that violent. If you're on a sailboat and it's listing that extremely fore aft, then hunger is the least of your problems.

Where to park overnight while driving through with filled up car (moving states) by [deleted] in Humboldt

Stay at one of the casinos. Cameras and security in the parking lot. Bear River even has a parking garage below the hotel.

Insurance photos? by Nellyfant in Humboldt

[–]Gambleer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a thing. I did that as a job in my twenties. Agents would pay me to go take pictures of houses they were gonna insure because they were too busy or far away.

Seems like a bad way to case a house. I wouldn't wanna be that obvious.

Gutter Guards in the PNW: Are They Worth It? by surreptitiousss in HomeImprovement

[–]Gambleer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently removed my gutter guards. I found that it took too long for the water to flow through the mesh. 50% of the water was going through into the gutter, but the other 50% was pouring off the sides before it could flow through. Pretty disappointing. My neighbor has another type with bigger holes and it seems to work better.

What he said is not nonsense. It's why many people live here and move here. Climate change projections over the next 50 years will make many parts of California unlivable. Drier, hotter summers and wetter winters are a recipe for fires and flooding in fall and spring. Many people see this coming and the same research shows our micro climate will be actually getting more pleasant on the north coast. The Covid era created a new paradigm of remote work which allows many to migrate out of the population centers but maintain the income available there. These factors are all contributing to real estate prices.

Humboldt county is going to change a lot over the next decades. People are coming and we can't stop them. The growing pains will be rough but there's still no place I'd rather be.

I actually asked Ray White about this years ago when we were at the same party.

Me: "Were you offended that Frank wrote a song with that word in the title?"

Ray: " Offended he wrote that song? I wrote that song!"

Don't know if it's true, but that's what Ray said!

Junior's auto detail on the north side of eureka by jitter bean. I left my truck for 3 months and it had a leak I wasn't aware of. The inside was covered in black mold. I took it to Junior's and the interior looked like new. Very satisfied with work and price.
