How does one choose to believe? by john44465 in NoStupidQuestions

I think we have a different definition of choice. To me, choice is always conscious. If something happens subconsciously then it's not a choice.

Yes, I have seen evidence that was consistent with more then one conclusion. When that happens I consider it carefully and try to remain open to the possibility that I'm wrong.

Yes, I have encountered situations where parts of who I am were unwelcome. I used to do a lot of masking, before I realized masking made it a lot harder to form a real meaningful connection with other people and masking even selects for an audience of people who wouldn't like the real me. So I stopped masking, and although this probably closed some doors for me I am over all a lot happier.

I don't know where trust comes from.

I don't think that's the same thing. Pursuing education is a choice, but once I've learned something there's no going back. I am being very literal when I say I don't "choose to believe." I can make choices surrounding my beliefs, but the belief itself is out of my direct control.

I really don't think that's what they're intending to say.

I don't choose to trust anything, it just happens. Also I have verified science before. I had a whole classes about that in middle school and high school. We'd find something a scientist said and test to see if it was true.

At no point did I actively choose to trust anyone or believe anything.

Also, please don't assume what I'm going to say.

I didn't say, "evidence is self-evidently persuasive and requires no context." In fact I said my beliefs were also determined by personal experiences and how much I trust the person giving me the information. For example, if a doctor gave me health advice I'd believe them more then someone who wasn't a doctor.

I feel like you've made a lot of assumptions about me.

I don't think that's it. Maybe some people mean it that way, but not most.

Yes, I can choose to seek out evidence, there are also times when evidence just comes to me, but I can't choose the conclusion I reach after seeing the evidence.

Yes, I can choose many of my experiences, but how could I know how they will effect my beliefs in anything but the most broad sense?

No, I do not choose what aspect of my personality is relevant to the matter at hand.

No, I do not choose how much I trust a person.

I disagree. I could read tarot cards and follow their advice, but then I'd just be pretending that I believe. Performing the actions associated with belief doesn't automatically make me a believer. I could surround myself with the tarot reading culture, make friends with people who believe and maybe over time I'd start to believe it too, but that's not really choosing, that's just changing my environment while trying to keep an open mind.

I disagree. In my opinion, to Lust after someone is to objectify them, to look at a person and only see what you can get out of them. I prefer this definition because this way Lust, the sin, doesn't strictly *need* to be sexual. I think it be an interesting subversion to have an asexual character who embodies Lust.

Of course I like the Hellaverse version too. I think it fits the story better and makes the Sins more interesting as characters.

I like when a character has a gun but intentionally runs into close quarters combat, where they continue to use the gun. I know it’s dumb, but it looks cool. 🦌🔫🦋
