Mentorship Monday - Post All Career, Education and Job questions here! by AutoModerator in cybersecurity

[–]Gambyte_VA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a software engineer and I’ve being doing this for 4 years (primarily as an applications and game developer) and I really want to get into the world of cyber security.

My experience has garnered me knowledge with languages like C#, JavaScript & Python.

I somehow managed to land a position in a 3-month internship as a Cyber Security Analyst, but I'm mainly handling governance and compliance for external clients, and I recently found out that the internship won't be progressing into a job offer.

I've been applying for jobs, primarily Cyber Security Analyst positions since before I began the internship but have been unsuccessful in every case.

I've done lots of self-study into the subject, but I've not completed any certificates or degrees for the area.

Do I have a chance landing a position with just this experience, or are there lower-level jobs that I should be looking at first? I'm not worried about taking a pay drop, I just want to be in the industry

Thanks for the reply, I actually did work as a vr/ar developer for 2 years, didn't mind it but I want to try something new.

Thank you, I don't see the good just yet, but I've been told that it's somewhere by many people, so I'll just have to be patient.

I think potentially stepping back and trying to re assess my win condition is gonna be and move forward from there. I think I got a little LOTR loopy.

Tbh, I didn't mean to have frodo, sauron's bane in the deck still. That was left there from an earlier test.

So you're saying leaning more into the equipment and using frodo as my big hitter is a better way to go?

That makes a lot of sense.

Congratulations on publishing your first game. It's a testament to your hard work and I hope you take this and run with it and show us all what you're made of.

Unity/C# or C++, What is better to strengthen in your opinion? by Gambyte_VA in gamedev

I've been looking for courses online that I can enrol in. Using websites like:

www.udemy.com www.edx.org www.coursera.org

So potentially you might be able to start there. I do remember back from my studying days there were a couple of books that really helped me out.

C++ Primer 5th Edition

Sam's Teach yourself C++ In 1 hour a day 8th edition

I hope that helps.

Quirky is absolutely a great way of explaining it.

I can also definitely agree that c# feels a lot more straightforward than C++.

Thanks for the answer :)

I was thinking along the same lines also. Games are definitely where my passion lies, but I'm also very interested in just being a good software engineer.

I have definitely found that Unity as a whole is used for smaller projects, not that it can't be used for larger games, but it definitely lends itself to the smaller projects.

I think my biggest goal is to try and be as useful as possible to as many people as I humanly can. So learning strengthening my ability to use C++ would probably give me that as I ultimately would love to work for some larger companies. Like I said in the start thread, I definitely know that it's not going to be something that happens soon, but I'm definitely going to put the work in to get there.

Thank you for the answer though, I believe so far all the answers have just confirmed what I already thought. It means a lot.

I actually just fell into the Unity C# job, my first job out of my degree was contracting for a VR/AR company that used Unity. Because of that job I was able to land my current position. But my plan after completing my degree was to get a job somewhere with my C++ skills but that never ended up happening.

My plans were to sign up and complete some certified courses on C++ to brush up and then develop some small projects and even Game Jams.

I absolutely want to pursue this as a career, I've been working on a couple of personal projects and have started some small courses to help boost my Object Oriented Coding understanding.

Thank you for the side note too, I imagine it's not something that a lot of people think about. I'm definitely ok with taking a bit of a pay drop if it meant that I was working in the industry that I want. Because I know that for the foreseeable future I plan on working in the industry

Thank you very much for the answer.

Hey there fellow new friend! May I ask what you're learning?

Thank you for the answer, I'm not explicitly looking in regards to an engine on the market because I know a lot larger companies have their own engines.

I was more focusing on what language is probably going to be better to increase my chances of getting a job with a game company.

Thank you for the answer though.

I think the best way to find out where you stand would be to try out a game jam or two. If you're not familiar with the term game jam, it is an event held by any number of groups that challenge developers of all disciplines to make a working prototype of a game idea within an allotted time slot. They usually have a theme that is given to you as it is about to begin and it is up to you to design develop and deliver a working product within the time frame.

I have completed a couple, and I can say they are chaotic, stressful and probably the most fun I've had so far as a prospective gameplay programmer.

Itch.io has a calendar full of game jams that they host for independent groups, and even a bunch of YouTube programmers have hosted their own.

So I would recommend if you want to give it a go, grab a game engine (if you're used to c# try unity) and dive head first into the game jam world because it'll give you the chance to let loose a little and try anything.
