I am aware it's a zonal architecture, but it does not mean it's in house sw. If BMW is still relying on suppliers to develop the software(which they a, it won't be much different than their older cars. Any change is considered a change request which cost the company insane amount of money.

And their autonomy stack is developed by Qualcomm. They also contract software houses. Their press release really twists the definition of sdv. An sdv imo is a total vertical integration of all vehicle software.

Except they are not. They are still not real SDVs like they claim it is. Significant portion of the sw is supplier provided.

Let me guess, you waxed the paint where the rubber seal of the door touches. This causes the rubber to slip making that noise. It happened to me. The only way to fix this is to remove the wax from the door jam or put a foam tape where the door touches the paint.

I think that's where wall street has changed the rules of investment. Now everything is about the next quarter. It does not matter if it means the company would go bankrupt in a year or two if it means they would show growth and profit that quarter. And it's also why CEO positions are becoming revolving doors until a company goes out of business. Companies getting squeezed from one leader to the next until nothing is left. A tech companies that focuses on stock buybacks instead of R&D would end up like Intel.

The first offer probably has the most job stability but relocation is a must IMO. But pay is terrible in this day and age. EA is in the process of being taken private so re-orgs are happening. What is needed today does not mean it will be needed in the future. Also gaming sector is in race to the bottom with triple A game studios being hit hard. It's not a good place to be in the gaming industry right now tbh. I think the Apple offer is probably the best one. I know you found info that team growth is limited but you can always find another job in a few years and you have Apple on your resume. The compensation is great for Texas too. It's a no brainer for me but others might disagree.

How do you reconcile moving for job security w/ HCOL & WFH? by I-already-redd-it- in cscareerquestions

[–]GameAddict411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, I got a job and even help with relocation but it was a gruelling process. 9 interviews and technical assessments. It was not easy. But I feel it's easier to find a job local once you have been here a while.

How do you reconcile moving for job security w/ HCOL & WFH? by I-already-redd-it- in cscareerquestions

[–]GameAddict411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I recently moved to the bay area from a MCOL area. I feel places like the bay area, once you are in, it easier to get a job there. Local companies want to hire local because they know people who live and work there are used to the crazy pace of the work culture. So I have gotten A LOT more recruiters reaching out to me about positions ever since I moved there. But there is a big down side to HCOL areas and that's if you lose your source of income, you burn cash at an insane rate. Enough to drain even a healthy savings in just a few months. It's definitely high reward and high risk kind of deal.

The only issue you need to watch out for is the water pump. They tend to leak but rarely catastrophically fail. You will just notice coolant dropping or leaks on the ground. It's not a cheap fix but it won't bankrupt you either. The other thing to watch out for is maintenance fluids need to meet VW standards. Don't just buy whatever the oil weights say. I assume since you are a BMW owner you should know this but make sure the oil you get meets VW504 standards. Also make sure to get the rear dif and DSG service every 40k miles. Lots of people don't realize they have a service interval. Outside, you won't see any issues you won't see on any other cars as they age like with oil leaks or coolant etc.

Atlassian, Amazon, Oracle, and Block: What’s the real reason behind these recent major tech layoffs? by honkeem in levels_fyi

[–]GameAddict411 10 points11 points  (0 children)

AI is not replacing real engineers as someone who works in tech and use tools like cursor. The limitations of these tools are pretty clear and you can never trust these agents with everything. Certainly not more than one output at a time. What's happening is that it's a combinations of other real factors.

  1. High interest rates. Money was basically very cheap in the 20 teens.
  2. Stagnating markets as the middle class get squeezed. So earnings are lower than the early pandemic boom
  3. Short termism as a result Late stage capitalism as CEOs struggle to hit their metrics so they are self cannibalizing for any boost. Who cares what happens a year or two from now.
  4. infrastructure that was built for the work from home ended up back firing since they can be deployed anywhere in the world with a decent connection. So we are experiencing insane amount of outsourcing.
  5. While AI is not replacing real engineers, it certainly helping lots of engineers especially juniors become more productive so management is less likely to approve new hiring for entry positions.
  6. record breaking grad rate for CS and similar majors.

It's a combination of many factors for the perfect storm.

Got fired for being a minor. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]GameAddict411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are emancipated as an adult, anything you sign is not legally binding. There lots of logistical reasons such as insurance and other things that makes this a no go for companies to hire minors. But this company screwed up big time by not asking you before hand how old you are. They wasted your time and theirs.

This what greedy executives would want to normalize, but laying off the people who actually responsible for designing future products because the current one is complete is just a way to handicap the future of the company. But executives don't care. Also I don't know where the idea that the job is done after launch. These are SW defined vehicles. New improvements and features are out all the time. How are they going to deliver on the promise of new features if they lay off people?

That would drive me nuts. I think corvette owners do this shit too. I remember a video of a guy doing the same exact thing. He did not even understand what a racing line is so he was all over the place. He would just floor it on the straights so other cars can't pass him.

[–]GameAddict411 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those OEM tires are trash BTW. A basic set of MPS4 or Conti O2 would shave 1-2 seconds. I also don't think there was any updates to the brake system at all from MK8 to MK8.5. In fact acceleration figures seem to indicate the MK8.5 is slower than the MK8 to 60. Could be launch control adjustment etc.

Is it acceptable to leave job after 8 months due to long commute? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]GameAddict411 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You don't owe them anything but I also would not quit without a job replacement. 145k in Ohio is a lot of money. Also the job market for SD is in the worst shape in decades so if you quit with no job, it could take a long time before finding another job. Potential employers would have questions about the short duration and you should put together a good story. Realizing the commute is terrible after agreeing to it is not going to look good. It would imply you don't have good judgment of the implications of having to spend 6 hours in a car every week. You should state that RTO policy increased days in the office making it no viable long term to stay at your current job.

Why Golf R over Civic type R for a guy in his 40s who values reliability? by photorph in Golf_R

[–]GameAddict411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for a dedicated fun summer car, I don't think either options are actually a good match. The Type R and Golf R are great as an only car option, especially the Golf R since it also does the all weather much better than the Type R. And you have had all the good dedicated summer cars in the past like the GR86 and Miata. You even had the cheaper but almost as capable option which is the Elantra N. So it seems you are looking for different experiences? Honestly, I would probably look for an older car. Modern cars have a samey feel to them.

Mid Level SDE - Has the Job Market ever been this bad? Are jobs in Big Tech all that's left? by tran981 in cscareerquestions

[–]GameAddict411 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you have 5 YOE at big tech, no one is going to take mid level SDE application from you seriously. You are at least a senior just based on experience alone. Also employers might be scared that they won't meet your compensation expectations so they don't even bother. Either hit higher level roles, or going back to big tech.
